The XIV World Forestry Congress (WFC) aims to build a new vision – a new way of thinking and acting – for the future of forests and forestry in sustainable development.

Investing in forests and forestry – in assets, in the enabling environment and in knowledge – means:

• integrating forests and other land uses

• enhancing the significant role of forests in climate change

• forests for improved food security

• making wood energy use more sustainable and efficient

• securing education and employment for youth

Vision for forests and forestry 2050For the first time ever, the World Forestry Congress (WFC) is hosted in the African region. Africa epitomizes many of the most important global challenges and opportunities for forests and forestry including climate change, urbanization, and increasing demands for commodities and environmental services. Coupled with competition for public funding, and a need to empower local communities, engage the private sector and strengthen governance and institutional reform, these are some of the issues at the core of the theme “Forests and people: investing in a sustainable future” and they all require urgent action.

Forests and people: investing in a sustainable futureThe Congress will show that investment in forestry is an investment in people and, in turn, an investment in national economies and sustainable development. People are at the centre of sustainable development. Forestry has immense potential in empowering people, in helping eradicate poverty, and in sustainably managing resources, all leading to sustainable development.

Informing the Sustainable Development Goals and the 2015 Paris ClimateConference COP 21The Congress is very timely in terms of the post-2015 development agenda. Although the new Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) are expected to be agreed just two weeks after the Congress, this gathering provides a great opportunity to consider the ways that forests can contribute to the implementation of the SDGs and the new climate change regime.

Innovative and inclusiveThe Congress serves as a key venue in 2015 for the world’s foresters – from decision-makers to local practitioners as well as partners from other sectors – to share their knowledge, experience and latest findings in a forum that will allow for challenging, constructive and sometimes controversial debate.

Critical issues will be addressed through the use of innovative approaches that engage participants in dynamic and stimulating dialogues. Key stakeholders, including young people, women, indigenous people and local communities, experts, practitioners and others from a wide range of sectors, will participate.

The stage is set for a participatory Congress where all participants will be given a platform for the voice of the constituencies they represent to be heard and where they will be free to share their

ideas, practices, technologies and experiences.

There will be a rich XIV WFC programme with plenary and technical sessions, special events and side events. More them 300 speakers are expected, many have

already confirmed their attendance. Check our website regularly to see updates on the XIV WFC Programme.

FacilitatorsThe Congress will have some well known facilitators, including Roberta

Annan from Ghana, who is an impact investment developer for Africa and advocate for women entrepreneurs, and news anchors Matt Frei,

Channel 4, and James Astill, The Economist.

TREEHOUSINGINTERNATIONAL WOOD DESIGN COMPETITION

TREEHOUSING is an international wood design competition featured by the XIV WFC. Housing for the world’s growing urban population and the threat of deforestation are two of the most significant issues facing humanity today.

TREEHOUSING challenges architecture students, professional architects and designers to develop innovative and sustainable wood housing and urban building solutions. Winners will be selected by an international jury led by Canadian architect Michael Green, who is known for his research, leadership and advocacy in promoting the use of wood.

XIV WFC technical papersXIV WFC will be hugely enriched by the inclusion of over 850 voluntary papers, more than 250 posters and 40 videos that have been submitted from over 100 countries. A number of the papers will be included in the sub-theme dialogues during the week. There will be a designated poster display area and submitted videos will be shown on screens in the Congress centre.

Exhibition areaA dedicated exhibition space has been established in the separate but easily accessible Durban Exhibition Centre. A number of exhibitions will be showcasing the work and products of many forest-related organizations. This area provides further possibilities for delegates to meet and network in between the main Congress events.

A legacy of this Congress will be a set of key messages to be issued following the work in Durban.

These will underscore the importance of forestry’s contribution to the new post-2015 development

goals and pave the road for a new vision of forests and forestry, as well as for a new climate change agreement at COP21 in Paris in December 2015.
