AESE IESE XIIMBA

executive

«AESE’s executive programs are interactive processes between managers with similar levels of responsibility. They start with captivating individual study, include lively discussions in small groups and end in general sessions that systematise ideas, draw up alternatives and lead towards concrete action plans. Each of the sessions offers an opportunity for professional and personal improvement that challenges participants to test their capacity of analysis, speed of decision-making and effective leadership, thereby developing their performance in the company and promoting employability. This transformational experience is referred to by many Alumni as one of the most valuable and relevant results of AESE’s programs, which leads to an active and transversal network of contacts that foment the competitiveness of the companies and organizations in which they each work. The network evolver through various moments, specifically the continuity programs that the School organizes, giving them greater depth and scope. The learning platform made up from AESE and partner schools associated to the IESE, in America and in many countries in Africa, form a powerful network that helps us respond to the diverse opportunities opened up by the global world in which we live.»

JOSÉ RAMALHO FONTES, General Director of AESE

MESSAGE FROM THE COMMITTEE OF THE EXECUTIVE MBA AESE/IESE

The EXECUTIVE MBA AESE/IESE promotes the acquisition of action-oriented knowledge and stimulates multidisciplinary reflection. Designed for experienced professionals who cannot remain away from their careers for a long period, the program helps to develop new conceptual methods that are useful in approaching business problems, within a well-structured methodological, ethical and coherent framework.Decisive factors in the success of the EXECUTIVE MBA AESE/IESE are the exchange of experiences and the learning of new realities, achieved through close contact between the participants, selected for their maturity and consolidated professional experience. The national and international congregation of teachers and professors, who research, teach and actively get involved in the

corporate world, help these executives in training to reason with depth, prudence, thoroughness and a practical sense. The relevance of globalization and of its implications on the practice of management is enhanced by the two intensive international weeks: one in the IESE in New York (USA) and the other in the Indian Institute of Management in Ahmedabad (India). The structure of our EXECUTIVE MBA AESE/IESE is challenging and demanding, but it allows participants to fulfil their professional and personal potential.

We would like to welcome you personally.Cordially,

Eugénio Viassa Monteiro,Chairman of the Committee of the Executive MBA AESE/IESE

DIMAS GIMENO ALVAREZ CEO OF EL CORTE INGLéS GROUp

“When I took over the management of El Corte Inglés in Portugal, I had the opportunity to take the AESE’s Executive MBA, in Lisbon. It was an enriching and remarkable experience, not only for the knowledge and management tools I acquired, but also because it allowed me to reflect on the reality of many other companies, through the case method.Throughout my professional life, I have had the privilege to apply many of these lessons and, today, I advise this program to the Group’s employees, because I know, first-hand, how excellent the level of education is at AESE, both in academic and human terms and I know how the program can benefit our team.”

AESE AND IESEThe close collaboration between AESE and IESE was further strengthened with the creation of the EXECUTIVE MBA AESE/IESE, a program that confers a joint diploma from these institutions. The program’s classes are mostly given in Lisbon, with one intensive week in IESE, in New York.

AESE is the oldest Business School in Portugal. It has been providing training in leadership and management since 1980. Core to the schools’ principles is the provision of learning according to a Christian perspective of bothe man and society. The recognition of its activity by the business world is the result of four main principles that make AESE a unique business school: more than 30 years of teaching using case method, a culture of participative learning, the alumni network, and social and corpo-rate responsibility. An international vision, respect for hu-man and ethical values and up-to-date research are some of the factors pointed out by more than 4,000 business lead-ers, who have improved their knowledge of management and developed their decision-making capacity with AESE.AESE has been an Honorary Member of the Order of Merit since 2006, an honour granted for meritorious acts and services in favour of society.

The IESE Business School is the post-graduate business school of the Univer-sity of Navarra. Founded in 1958, for the last 5 decades IESE has consolidated its prestige and recognition interna-tionally as one of the most respected management schools. There are more than 30 research centres in IESE specialized in the investiga-tion and development of topics such as entrepreneurship, family businesses, finances, globalization and corporate social responsibility, among others. Nu-merous works of investigation carried out by the IESEs’ teachers are recog-nised internationally.Behind the success of its executive programs is the IESE’s dedication to the development and enrichment of the individual, proven by more than 34,000 Alumni, in over 100 countries, recog-nised for their professional excellence, integrity and vision.

IESE is in the Top Ten of the MBA rankings of the Finantial Times and The Economist.

IESE #1 in the World in Executive Education for Open Programs, FT, May 2011.

Learning to lead is a constructive process, where practice, experi-ence and talent serve as a basis for decision-making. In AESE, the Case Method created by Harvard Business School is the basis of the formative process. The need to act, the tools for making deci sions and the exchange of experiences are the key factors in this process. The cases are based on real prob-lems, similar to those that an exec-utive or leader encounters in his/her professional life, with chal-lenges, complexity and high risk , which the participants’ capacities of leadership are developed in a practical, real and invaluable manner. Techniques and tools are transformed into pondered and effective decisions. Cases are analysed in three steps:

INDIVIDUAL STUDYThe challenges proposed require in-depth analysis of the situations, in which the information presented can be scanty or insufficient. As in the day-to-day of a company, an effective response is required, in ambiguous circumstances, within a constantly changing economic, political and social context. This initial study of each case, which requires up to two hours of individual work, invites the participant to assess and determine the decisions that the situation requires, assuming the role of the decision-maker.

LEARNING TEAMSThe choices and decisions of each participant are then discussed in a meeting of eight to ten people who make up the learning teams. The coming together of different points of view corresponding to the background of each member of the group, their personal characteristics and their management models add exceptional value to the individual analysis and enable a more effective plan of action to be drawn up.

PLENARY SESSIONFinally, in a plenary session, the teacher directs and coordinates the debate, summarises the main aspects of the case, relates this to the most significant theories, and highlights the relevant values and options, taking into account the various alternative solutions and the possible criteria for taking a decision, at times suggesting the best action plan according to the organization’s objectives.

During the program, in line with the analysis of the cases, the participants’ leadership capacities and competences are further developed through theoretical classes, simulations and conferences with leading speakers. Also available to the participants is an interactive platform for sharing and distributing documents and information in electronic format. This platform helps the participants, the work groups and teachers to mutually connect in a quick and accessible manner.

ANA SEABRA BRITO MANAGER OF EVERIS pORTUGAL

“The EXECUTIVE MBA AESE/IESE radically changed the way I face professional challenges: the fact that we analyse countless real cases of success and failure using the Case Method, gives us an enormous capacity of analysis and resolution of our professional problems and opportunities. The points that I would highlight about the Executive MBA AESE/IESE are:It’s an international MBA, with weeks spent abroad; the quality of the team of teachers and speakers, comprised of teachers with years of experience and successful business people, and finally the case method, which is, in my opinion, the most effective way of learning.”

15

In a rapidly changing global world, the EXECUTIVE MBA AESE/IESE boosts a manager’s development and maturity. MIGUEL MATIASCEO OF SELF ENERGy

“The EXECUTIVE MBA AESE/IESE was fundamental for my decision to start a new company, as in one of the project areas, NAVES (New Entrepreneurship Adventures), we have to set up and discuss a business model of a new company. This was the first sketch for Self Energy. In this regard I remember the advice I received from an IESE teacher, Pedro Nueno, who told me: «If you have a business idea, let it mature for up to two years at the most. And if it is still solid and the market trend confirms your initial idea, then you have to drop everything else and implement it, otherwise you’ll be unhappy forever, thinking about what you should have done.». And that was what I did. In 2006, two years after finishing the MBA, I created Self Energy which operates in the area of renewable energies, through energy efficiency solutions that enable a company, building or individual to be self-sufficient. Today, we have offices operating in London, Lisbon, Porto, Tavira, Madrid, Alicante and Maputo.”

17

NAVES, a venture capital, was created by AESE Alumni with the aim of supporting entrepreneurship projects, developed for the project area NAVES – New Entrepreneurship Adventures. Today it reaches out to all the projects of AESE’s Alumni.

This innovative and singular project among international Business Schools is part of a strategic positioning that, according to an analysis by Accenture, gauges the success of an investment in small-sized projects, in the early stages. What started out as being a temporary project is now something we want to last forever.

NAVES, SCR can be the financial support necessary for bringing about the entrepreneurial spirit that AESE encourages in all of its programs, whether in the business domain or in social responsibility.

The NAVES financially backed a number of the projects developed by AESE Alumni, SCR, thereby helping to set up companies in areas such as energy, tourism and social solidarity.

Accenture provides the back office support for NAVES SCR.

Can i balance an eXeCutiVe MBa aese/iese with family life and personal commitments?

The program requires you to attend around 10 hours of work per week and do around 15 hours/week of individual study. In the words of one Alumni: “The EXECUTIVE MBA AESE/IESE makes you work, requires effort and is only possible with a lot of support from your family. However, I felt the positive impact of the Program on my personal and professional aims right from the start, whether by demanding more discipline in my time management, or from the new perspective that I was acquiring on problems, which was making me more competent and able to face new challenges.”

is an executive MBa for me?

The Executive MBA programs are designed for professionals with experience and who cannot be away from their career for a long period. The EXECUTIVE MBA AESE/IESE is taught in part-time format, allowing the participants to study as they work. Participants will need a high level of management experience (in the last 2 years, the average age was 36 years old) and, as a result, the candidates are more mature and experienced than the participants on a full-time MBA.The EXECUTIVE MBA AESE/IESE is made up from a group of executives with different backgrounds, duties and careers, carefully selected for their maturity and consolidated professional experience who meet the selection criteria.

are there benefits for the companies?

In the words of Ana Paula Carvalho, Executive Director of Laboratórios Pfizer: “The EXECUTIVE MBA AESE/IESE is one of the best investments that any company should make in relation to its talent. Such an investment, that we make in our staff, helps them to acquire technical and interpersonal competences that will be the key to the success of any person and company.”

Why the aese/iese executive MBa?

In the opinion of Miguel Kreiseler, from the Centre Manager – W Shopping, – Multi Mall Management Portugal and participant in the VIII EXECUTIVE MBA AESE/IESE: “The personal growth and the professional enrichment of each participant of the EXECUTIVE MBA AESE/IESE are its differential variable, the one that distinguishes them from and gives them an advantage over the competition. Throughout the program a unique group spirit is born, through discussion of the cases and from the international contact, which is unequalled and remarkable. The MBA builds friendships, fosters friendships that become special among mature people, with significant professional and academic experience. We interact and above all we learn with each other. For almost 2 years in a heterogeneous and complementary group, we go through moments of joy and assessment, discussion and analysis of cases, closely related to our day-to-day work. The EXECUTIVE MBA AESE/IESE is for life.”
