DIGITAL IMAGING SYSTEMS

Our Digital Imaging systems are hand built to the requirements of the customer. The size of the unit and type of screen used is dependent on the subject being X-rayed, resolution required and the output power of the X-ray source.

The detector and internal electronics are protected by shielding to ensure long detector life. The picture to the left shows lead shielding for an Imaging System used in Megavoltage X-ray imaging.

DIGITAL IMAGING SYSTEMS

Systems can be configured and optimised to suit customer requirements

(e.g. resolution, framing rate, x-ray energy).

Rugged design with low sensitivity to radiation damage. This is particularly important with megavolt x ray imaging especially where neutron production can be an issue.

Input scintillator screen chosen to optimise sensitivity vs resolution requirements. Typical sizes produced range from 1000mm x 670mm to 430mm by 350mm, but other sizes can be produced on request.

High resolution cooled detector with 4008 x 2672 pixels. Pixel size is 9 microns.

On chip integration and frame averaging for lowest noise images.

Full 16 bit digitisation for excellent contrast and dynamic range.

Bespoke software controls image capture, processing, viewing and storage. Processing features include image calibration and subtraction and there are comprehensive tools to assist image interpretation by the operator.

Key Features

Software options are available for user specific semi automatic inspection routines which can also be integrated with object handling, x-ray exposure control and bar code object tracking.

DIGITAL IMAGING SYSTEMS

Image review, sentencing and saving options built into the software and can be linked to the bar code object tracking system. These can also be user defined.

High specification computer equipment used for system control and display.

Image display (for sentencing) on high quality monochrome display.

Interfaces to Xi-VAS (Viewing and Archive System) for offline (re)viewing and archiving and backup of image files.

Latest Windows 8 operating system.

Systems are operating in Europe, Middle East, South America, India, Asia and the UK and customers include Rolls-Royce, BAE Systems, British Nuclear Fuels, UK Ministry of Defence, Italian Ministry of Defence, Indian Ministry of Defence, Fiat Avio, Rheinmetall Denel, NUSIM, etc

Xi-DIS Performance

Radiographic performance is typically better the 1.5% 2T when using subtraction techniques. “Basic” image quality is better than 2% 2T.

This performance is comparable with x-ray film but detection rates can often be improved due to the processed image display which highlights defects for easier identification.

Detectable defect size depends on system input screen size and radiographic geometry however for a 1000mm x 670mm input screen a detector pixel (9 microns) would equate to 0.25mm at the scintillator screen or 0.2mm on the object for a typical radiographic geometry.

Base gaps or circumferential disbonding gaps of less than 0.5mm can be discerned using image subtraction techniques.

Spherical defects of less than 1mm are detectable depending on application.

Smaller Xi-DIS systems such as a 430mm x 350mm radiograph replacement size would offer improved resolution.
