ABOUT INTERNATIOAL HOUSE XIAN

International House Xian is the member school of International House World

Organisation (IHWO). It was created particularly for foreigners, who want to learn

Chinese, where it is spoken first hand. And especially for those who acquire a language,

but don't want to swot only vocabularies. We offer a chance to practice using language

among people, who use it every day, on the road, and of course, about what they laugh

about and how they think.

The school lies south of the historical city walls and is housed in a modern two-story

building. The school has a central information office, a library with self-learning material,

a student common room, a computer room with ten computers connected to the internet, a

multifunction room, as well as a fully-equipped kitchen. In the summer, the courtyard with

its many plants, and the roof terrace add their open spaces to the premises.

We have six main areas of activity:

Teaching English as well as German, Spanish, French and Italian to Chinesestudents and company clients.

ABOUT XIAN

Xian, called Changan in the past, is one of the cradles of human civilization and Chinesenation. Xian lies in the heart of China and used to be the starting point of the Silk Road.

In ancient times the caravans set out from here westwards. The ancient and mysterious

Xian, with a city history 3,100 years and a capital history of 1,100 years for 13 dynasties,

has inherited profuse historical relics and cultural heritages. Along with Rom and

Constantinople, this city was a world leader in culture and trade and played a vital role in

the bridging the gap between east and west. In the West, the people have Rome and in

the Orient, we have Xian. This is a popular saying reflecting the historical status of

Xian.

Among the many dynasties Xian was capital to, Qin, the first empire of China, and Tang,

the peak of Chinas ancient culture, have left the city with the most abundant legacy. The

Terracotta Warriors of the Qin Dynasty, an attached defending army to the first emperor of

China, is regarded as the eighth wonder of the world. The Tang Dynasty has endowed

Xian even more relics, including the big mosque, the Tomb of unique Empress Wu Ze

Tian, Huaqing Pool and all date back to that period.

Today, with booming economy and inviting scenery, Xian has become a destination for

international visitors. Aside from being a major tourist destination and historical city,

today Xian is an important industrial and manufacturing centre. Yet, the historicalbuildings, the close lanes, and city-wall of the 14th Century, which is the most completely

preserved in China, let it still appear however nearly like a small town.

OUR CHINESE COURSEWhat makes IH Xian special are the principles of our courses: We believe that different

types of clients should be catered for in different ways. In our school, both managers and

university students are offered the highest quality courses, but in separate groups. Simply

because of the difference in age, needs, interests, budgets etc.

We offer Chinese, English, German, Spanish, French, Russian and Italian language

courses. No matter what your level we can offer tuition: from Total Beginners (A1) to

Advanced. In addition to language and conversation courses, we also offer examination

preparation.

OUR TEACHING METHOD

International House Xian (IH Xian) is recognized that different people learn languages in

different ways. Our teachers, therefore, select the techniques and materials most

appropriate to the student's needs.

The emphasis of all courses is put on communication. Our aim is to enable students to

cope with everyday and business situations. Both basic grammar and the necessary

language functions are taught and practiced. Most of the time the group will be split into

pairs and groups, ensuring a maximum amount of student talking time. The principal of

moving gradually from controlled practice to free-speaking activities enables course

participants to use the functions, structures and vocabulary they have learnt in real life.

Each day is split into three parts (Juniors: two parts): two lessons each of grammar and

conversation and one lesson of listening comprehension exercises. Our teachers are allnative speakers. They are highly qualified and experienced teachers of Chinese as Foreign

Language.

Teachers have access to a range of up-to-date course books and workbooks,

supplementary materials produced by IH Xian teachers and video and audio-cassettes.

Using these resources, they design a course suitable for their group or one-to-one students.

In addition to this, they use teaching methods which are tailor-made to the individual

language needs of the course participants.

Our Course prepare the students for the language examination HSK(Hanyu ShuipingKaoshi). This standardized language ability test was developed in Peking, can be passed in

Xi'an and is internationally recognized.

All class participants receive a qualified conclusion certificate from International House

Xian at the end of the course.

OUR SOCIAL ACTIVITIES

At International House Xian (IH Xian) you can take part in a variety-filled cultural

programme as well as learning different languages. Just near the school is the

world-famous Terracota Army of the first Emperor of China. We can, of course, offer you

a day out there with a well-informed guide. Other excursion highlights are the Tomb of the

First Empress, Mount Hua (one of the five mythical mountains of China), several nearby

temple sites and the Banpo Neolithic Village.

Xian has many sights which you can discover by yourself with help of our city guide;

inside the old city walls you can see the city symbol, the Bell Tower as well as the Drum

Tower. A few steps away you can enter the busy Muslim quarter and the Great Mosque.

We can lead you through a tiny alleyway, that has been restored in Ming and Quing style,

and take you to the Stele Forest Museum where you can visit Chinas largest collection ofstoneworks. Outside the city walls you can visit more temples, the Big Wild Goose

Pagoda and the Small Wild Goose Pagoda and other museums.

My experience with IH Xian will maybe stay in my mind as one of

the greatest I have had since a long time. I mean that I had

Before my arrival in China, I didn't know anything in Chinese, except
