Xerox® Phaser® 6180MFP Series vs. HP Color LaserJet CM2320n and CM2320 SeriesCompetitive Assessment
Xerox Phaser® 6180MFP Multifunction PrinterCompetitive Assessment
This document has been prepared from internal analysis as well as data prepared by Buyers Laboratory Inc. (BLI), the imaging industry’s leading source of unbiased and reliable competitive intelligence. Data was collected in BLI’s 10,000 square-foot lab in Hackensack, New Jersey and has been published in BLI’s Lab Test Reports, Environmental Test Reports, and BLI Side-By-Side Comparison publications, among others.

The Phaser 6180MFP’s innovative print drivers were recognized with a BLI “Pick” award for “Outstanding Achievement,” Fall 2008The Phaser 6180MFP supports Xerox’s Global Print Driver and the Mobile Express Print Driver, which received a BLI “Outstanding Achievement Award” in Fall 2008.
“In our lab trial using the Xerox Global and Mobile Print Drivers, we were able to print documents on non-Xerox devices, including copier-based and printer-based models, on our test network,” said Tony Maceri, BLI’s Senior Test Technician. This flexibility lets workers print anywhere in their office, even on non-Xerox printers and copiers, with a single interface, instead of having to keep numerous print drivers installed (which is time-consuming for IT workers as well as confusing to end users).

Productivity
Productivity analysisProductivity is influenced by a variety of factors, ranging from the obvi-ous (rated engine speed, rated scan speed) to the subtle (streamlined administrative procedures, for example, and overall ease of use). We will examine numerous factors that contribute to the overall productivity advantages of the Phaser 6180MFP in this section.
Ease of use is a critical factor in determining productivity. If users have to spend time figuring out how to use a function properly, they’re not doing the jobs they’re paid to do and their productivity suffers dramatically. The Phaser 6180MFP’s advantages in ease of use include…
Better print drivers keep workers more productive
Phaser 6180MFP Color LaserJet CM2320 MFP
PrintingScout polls the MFP before a job is sent and informs the user with a pop-up window if there are any errors, such as paper out, along with information about how to correct them
HP ToolboxFX is a separate installation, and it is a standalone application that is not integrated into the print driver
Global/mobile drivers support multiple Xerox models as well as non-Xerox devices
Universal driver supports only HP devices

Faster job stream printing Tested PCL job stream print speed (in PPM)
BLI’s job stream includes Word documents, Outlook e-mail messages, Excel spreadsheets, PowerPoint, HTML and Acrobat PDF files, totaling 19 pages. All of the files are sent the printer simultaneously. This test simulates the type of traffic a typical device might experience in a real-world, multi-user environment.

Cost control
Reduce overlooked costsCost control is influenced by factors including toner and supplies cost as well as energy usage and – most often overlooked – the amount of time workers spend installing, tracking and maintaining the device on the network. In this section, we’ll examine the Phaser 6180MFP’s advantages over the Color LaserJet CM2320 in these key areas.

According to BLI’s Lab Test Reports…
“CentreWare Web (CWW), the fleet management tool for the Phaser 6180MFP, can be downloaded for free from Xerox’s Web site. BLI has tested the utility and found it to be powerful and flexible.”

Key positioning strengths of the Color LaserJet CM2320 MFP and how to combat them with prospective customers
The HP costs lessWhat the HP sales rep could say:
“The Color LaserJet CM2320fxi MFP costs less than the Phaser 6180MFP/D, and it offers twice the standard paper capacity (two 250-sheet paper drawers) as well as a faster color engine speed.”
How to respond:
“In this case, you get what you pay for. The price difference of $50 is minor considering that the Phaser 6180MFP has a much faster rated black engine speed (31 ppm versus only 21 ppm for the HP model); color fax capability (in contrast, the CM2320fxi faxes only in black and white, and the CM2320n configuration has no fax capability at all); a higher bypass capacity (150 sheets versus only 50 sheets for the CM2320fxi); and higher toner yields for lower toner costs. What’s more, the Phaser 6180MFP can be upgraded to handle much more paper (up to 950 sheets), while users of the CM2320fxi are limited to the paper supply they start out with.”
Uses less energy when printingWhat the HP sales rep could say:
“The Color LaserJet CM2320 MFP uses only 460 watts when printing, while the Phaser 6180MFP uses up to 500 watts. In power-save mode, the HP model uses only 9.2 watts, which is much lower than the 17 watts used by the Phaser 6180MFP in power-save mode.”
How to respond:
“Electricity usage is only part of the picture when you consider ‘green’ issues. The Phaser 6180MFP includes numerous features that save resources as well as money, including high-capacity toner cartridges that last longer, so they are replaced less often, ID Card Copy capability that copies both sides of a document (such as a drivers’ license) on to a single-sided sheet. It prints at a much lower noise level, which contributes to a more comfortable work environment.”
