Shopping in Xela
Welcome to Xela! We hope that you enjoy your stay here. Quetzaltenango boasts many things to do, both in and around the city, so you shouldn't have too much trouble finding fun activities.
Xela's center has a great small-city feel, as those of us who live here can attest. There are many nice restaurants and happening bars -- the prices are pretty good, too. We recommend each of our advertisers, but we're also sure that you'll be able to find something good on your own if you try.
The hilly terrain and volcanic activity around Quetzaltenango mean that the surrounding area provides many options for outdoor activity. From breathtaking views (and hikes) to plenty of volcanically-fueled hot places to relax, the city has a lot to offer. This month's featured excursion is to El Baúl, a nice overlook of the city. If you’re looking for something more adventurous, check out the archive of past excursions on our website (http://www.xelamaponline.com). For other ideas talk to one of the tour companies located around the center.
While Xela is our favorite place, we also really like Lago Atitlán so we decided to start making a map of there, too. It’s called LAGOMAP, original, we know. If you’re up there, be sure to grab one.
We hope you find this map and guide interesting and useful. If you have any questions or suggestions, please shoot an email over to [email protected]. Most of all, though, enjoy your visit!
Groceries: All the markets have fresh fruit and vegetables. Generally speaking, prices go up as you get closer to the center. So the Terminal Minerva market is the cheapest, followed by La Democracia, Las Flores, and the Centro Comercial by the park. You can get most everything else you need at these markets as well (particularly in La Democracia and at Minerva) but if you feel the need for a true supermarket experience there is always Despensa Familiar or Paiz. Other interesting natural foods (granola, etc.) are available at Al Natur (#10). Finally,
Used Clothing: The Minerva market has a big section full of used clothes from the USA. You can find amazing deals here. Bargain away, but look particularly for the 3Q piles. Also check out the many clothing stores scattered around the city. New Clothing: La Democracia market has lots of nice clothing -- Guatemalan-made in the street stalls and more expensive imported stuff in the shops.
Electronics: There are many electronics shops along 12th Avenida ("La Doce"), but you can also find decent deals in the shop right on Parque Central. If you're looking for something for an apartment check out La Pulguita along the side of the cemetery near Parque El Calvario.
Alcohol: El Rosario on 8th Calle (D12-21) near Mercado Las Flores has good prices, but if you can’t make it there you’ll be okay in any tienda.
Souvenirs: Parque Central on the first Sunday of each month is best, but also look in the Centro Comercial next to the park or inside of the central market in La Democracia.
Gear: La Aventura in Mont Blanc (”paiz” in the microbuses).
Musical Instruments: La Panamericana on Parque Central.

Remember, these are the prices you should pay, but sometimes the ayudante will ask for more. You should be able to get closer to the real prices with this information. There’s a fine line between not getting ripped off and being a jerk to the ayudante, so please, be friendly.

Mercado La DemocraciaThe best prices are in the terminal, but the Democracia Market is close to the center and still has very good prices for meat, fruits and vegetables, electronics, clothes, shoes, hardware, handicrafts and many other things. Here we’ve created a handy map of the stores and shops in the market and the surrounding areas.

Con la Ayuda de DiosOne day, a man was walking through the jungle when out of nowhere a group of cannibals (who didn't look like they had good things in mind) surrounded him.
"I'm screwed!" shouted the man. With that, the sky opened up, a ray of light descended, and a voice was heard:
"No, not yet. What you have to do is take the spear from the head cannibal and throw it through the heart of his son."So the man singled out the head cannibal and fought him, he grabbed the spear, and threw it through the young boy that was beside him. The man looked at the sky questioningly, and once again they heard the voice:
"OK, now you're screwed."

A Los Chapines Les Gustan Los Huevos: Yep, the Guatemalans like their eggs. These were the slang translations that we put in the first edition of XelaMap, but we think they're so useful that we're repeating them. If you're new to the city, enjoy learning to talk like a local!

The Amazing (xela) race

Español Literal English Real Meaning
¡Qué huevos! What eggs!Exclamation when you
don't want to do something.
Hacerle Huevos To make eggs for someone. To help someone(with something).
¡Sos un huevon! You're a giant egg. You're a lazy shit.

Overlooking Xela from the East is a nice viewpoint that's actually very easily reached from the city. It's also a hotspot on the weekends, with families barbecuing and hanging out, kids playing soccer, and the not-to-be-missed concrete slides, or resbaladeros. This is a great hike for any morning or afternoon, or anytime, really. It's steep, but short, so shouldn't be too taxing for anybody. There's also a road to the top in case you want to drive or take a taxi.
Concrete Slides / Resbaladeros
Watch out! The way these work is you take a attened plastic bottle and sit on it to slide. If you have a good big bottle (experts use the 3L ones) you can get going really fast. These things are awesome, but... you could kill yourself. So be careful
Introducing our version of reality television, the Amazing Race, Xela-style. Though it’s not actually televised, and doesn’t even involve video, it should be fun. All you need is a camera! At each step, you’ll win discounts or special offers at local businesses, and get the chance to chat (in Spanish or English) with various friendly members of the local tourist industry. If you complete either of the two routes of the race, we’ll also put your pictures and story on a special section of our website!
So here’s the deal: we’ll give you a place to go and a photo to take. Each of the photos should show you or your group and the requirement. At the destination, you’ll show the photo on your camera and in receive the next place and requirement. Each person in your group will also get a coupon good for a discount or special offer. For the most part the photos shouldn’t be difficult to take, and along the way you’ll get to see some of the neat places around town. Feedback welcome! Feel free to email Sean ([email protected]) with questions, problems, or suggestions.
Route 1 Route 2
Place: Altiplanos Tours
Requirement: A photo of a jaguar (or other animal) at the zoo
Place: Al Natur
Requirement: A photo of Xela from El Baúl
Remember, each photo has to have you in it, too! Have Fun. Each route has 7 steps in it, so getting on the internet (everybody wants to be there, right?) isn’t really even that hard.
3. Follow this road up the hill, turning when you are nearly at the end. The turnoff is a small dirt road with houses along the left side.
4. Cross the main road and keep heading up the path.
5. Enjoy the view, wander around the park at the top, and be sure not to miss the...
6. Slides. Follow the sign to Resbaladeros.
