FROM THE RECTOR Dear Parents and Guardians We are rapidly coming towards the end of Lent and, before long, Term 1 will be complete and the drama of Holy Week followed by the great Christian celebration of Easter will be upon us. Last Sunday’s Gospel of the Parable of the Prodigal Son or, perhaps, the loving and forgiving Father (Luke 15:11-32) prompts each of us to reflect on our relationships with others and our relationship with God. In this season of preparation the Church encourages each of us to deepen our relationship with God through a more attentive prayer life as well as through acts of charity and almsgiving. During the coming week, each of us can profit spiritually from praying over the parable of the prodigal son. I would encourage each of you to ask yourself which character in the story do you identify with and why. At various points in our lives, the answer to these questions changes. Many of us identify with the older son; like him, we have sought to honour our parents and to live lives of generous service. Such an approach in itself is good, but when it leads a person to become judgmental and develop a certain hardness of heart, and perhaps even resentment, relationships can suffer and a certain distance develops. By way of contrast, many of us are slow to identify with the younger son who rejects his father by claiming an early share of his father’s estate, leading to a life of reckless living. Very few of us have responded in such an extravagant manner but all of us at various points in our lives have made decisions that have disappointed our parents, strained our relationship with them, placing them in the position of the Father, waiting patiently, with an ever constant love and compassion whilst we grow and mature. The image of the loving and forgiving father is one of the most moving in the New Testament, “but while he was still far off, his father saw him and was filled with compassion; he ran and put his arms around him and kissed him”. This was beautifully depicted by the 17 th century Dutch painter Rembrandt van Rijn (below). The love of a father and the love of a mother are depicted in the different hands of the father embracing the younger son, who was lost but now is found. As we approach Easter, let’s pray that each of us will have the humility to acknowledge before our loving God the areas in our own lives that need to be touched by the Father’s compassionate and forgiving love. May we have the honesty and the courage to be attentive to both the younger brother and the older brother that we experience within ourselves so that we can truly experience the unconditional love and mercy of the Father. After all, that is the story that awaits us with the celebration of Jesus’ death and resurrection—that is the gift of Easter. Wishing you every blessing Fr Thomas Renshaw SJ Rector [email protected]

FROM THE RECTOR

Dear Parents and Guardians

We are rapidly coming towards the end of Lent and, before long, Term 1 will be complete and the drama of Holy Week followed by the great Christian celebration of Easter will be upon us. Last Sunday’s Gospel of the Parable of the Prodigal Son or, perhaps, the loving and forgiving Father (Luke 15:11-32) prompts each of us to reflect on our relationships with others and our relationship with God. FROM THE PRINCIPAL Dear Parents and Guardians

I hope you enjoyed the long weekend with your family. It is always interesting to hear how families celebrate their time together. I have heard of the students speaking of camping trips, time at the beach, the parks, shopping, autumn cleaning, gardening, movies and the Moomba festival. Whatever brought you together, I hope it has been a renewing experience and you survived the heat!

Recently, the College opened its doors to the public with the first of four open days to be conducted during the year. During my welcome to the families, I made mention that the guides for the morning were some Year 12 boys who had volunteered their Saturday morning to speak about their personal experience of the school. They do not have an adult with them prompting them with well rehearsed lines about the benefit of a Xavier education. These boys speak from the heart. They are out of bed early on a Saturday morning because they want to share their genuine love for the school. I encouraged our visitors to ask the boys whatever questions they wanted to know about the school. I was quite taken by the overwhelming praise for these boys and our visitors wanted their children to be as articulate and passionate as these young men. This made me reflect on what is our hope for each student on their graduation day.

On Valete evening towards the end of the year, Fr Renshaw SJ and I present our graduates with a document entitled a Xavier Graduate on Graduation. It states, “As you leave Xavier College, may your life continue to be guided by the following principles and values:

RELATIONSHIP TO GOD God centred

“We are created to praise, reverence and serve God”—St. Ignatius of Loyola Spiritual Recognise that the initiative for all that happens in me is from God. Reflective Engages in the Ignatian practice of reflection on experience leading to action so that one is transformed into

a truly integrated person engaged in the world.

RELATIONSHIP TO THE WORLD Excellence in Humanity

Seeking excellence in myself and encouraging it in others. Gratitude

“We give thanks to God for God’s indescribable gift to us”—2 Corinthians 9:15 Integrity, Respectfulness and Responsibility

Seeking and finding God in all things—St. Ignatius of Loyola RELATIONSHIP TO THE CHURCH

Team member I belong to a community of faith with a single aim to be on Mission with Christ.

Committed To search for the truth in my relationship with others.

Just “To act justly, to love tenderly and to walk humbly with your God”—Micah 6:8

SERVICE OF OTHERS Loving “Love ought to manifest itself in deeds rather than words”—St. Ignatius of Loyola Compassionate In Jesus' words: “Be compassionate as your heavenly Father is compassionate”—Matthew 5:48 Generous Generosity was one of the most important dispositions Ignatius looked for in individuals— “A Man for Others”.

My hope is that these aspirations become a reality for all of our graduates at some stage in their lives.

Blessings and peace for the coming week.

FROM THE DIRECTOR OF THE SENIOR CAMPUS

Dear Parents and Guardians

YEAR 10 PARENT INFORMATION EVENING This was an important evening for the Year 10 boys and their parents. A variety of staff gave presentations on a range of areas of school life particularly pertinent to this stage of the boys’ education. The evening was well attended and my thanks to Ms Louise Allsop, Year 10 Operations Coordinator, who organised the evening and to all the staff who gave presentations on the night.

THE NEXT FEW WEEKS I hope that everyone was able to enjoy a relaxing long weekend as we have a very busy last few weeks of term coming up. I would just like to highlight a few of the events on the horizon: Head of the River

This Saturday is the climax of the Rowing Season with the annual Head of the River Regatta at Nagambie. Apart from the boys, their coaches and the loyal band of parents, we will have another 200 students and over a dozen staff there to support the boys. I would like to remind all parents, however, that your son needs to fulfil his Saturday sporting commitment before he comes along to the rowing event

Activities Week

This takes place from Monday 18 – Friday 22 March and is compulsory for all students:

Year 9 – Outdoor Education Experience all week Year 10 - Work Experience all week Year 11 – Classes Monday and then Social Awareness Week (SAW) from Tuesday 19 – Friday 22 March Year 12 – Classes Monday, SACs and Excursions and private study on Tuesday, viewing a performance of

Henry IV on Wednesday and Retreat on Thursday and Friday APS Swimming

Our swimmers get to represent the school at this event on Wednesday 20 March at 7:30pm in the evening at MSAC. These boys have been training long and hard for this event and, as with the rowing, we will have a large group of students and staff there to support them on the night.

Have a great fortnight ahead and I look forward to meeting many of the parents new to the Senior Campus this year at

the Welcome Drinks this Friday in the Great Hall commencing at 7:30pm. Kind regards

John Hickey Director of the Senior Campus [email protected]

IMPETIGO—SCHOOL SORES Impetigo is an infection of the skin caused by bacteria. The bacteria that cause impetigo can live on the skin without causing a problem, but sometimes they can start an infection. The sores are often on the face near the mouth and nose, or on the arms and legs. Impetigo is very easily spread. The fluid and crusts of the sore contain the bacteria, and contact with the sore or with items that have been on the sore (clothing, dressings, towels, etc.) can spread the infection to other people. An antibiotic ointment/cream is generally prescribed by a doctor. Covering exposed sores with a waterproof dressing and keeping school students home until appropriate treatment has begun is recommended.

CAREERS NEWS

YEAR 10 WORK EXPERIENCE Staff in the Careers Office are deeply appreciative of parents’ help with the administrative procedures for Work Experience. This will take place between the 18 – 22 March. Boys will return to school for the final four days of Term 1 which will include a debriefing about the experience. All boys have completed a half-day seminar on Safety at Work as part of the preparation for Work Experience. In the week before Work Experience they will be briefed about expectations whilst on placement, including the requirement to call both the employer and the school if they are going to be absent at any time during the week. All students will be emailed and given a hard copy of a Work Experience Journal to reflect on; parents are encouraged to view this document as it provides a platform for you to discuss how the week is going with your son, and even delve into discussions about future career directions.

UPCOMING EVENTS The first two editions of the online Xavier Careers Newsletter has been emailed to all students in Years 10 to 12. I urge students and parents to read this and attend some of the relevant information sessions. The newsletter can be accessed on the Portal under Services/Careers/Newsletters. Upcoming events advertised in this include:

Melbourne University Veterinary Science day —Sunday 17 March 2013 250 Princes Hwy, Werribee UOM Veterinary Hospital 10:00am – 3:00pm. For more information see www.vet.unimelb.edu.au/openday

Engineering EXPO—Thursday 21 March from

2:00pm – 7:00pm. More information at www.engineeringexpo.org.au.

XAVIER COURSES EXPO Year 11 and 12 students are invited to the annual Xavier Courses Expo which will be held on the evening of Wednesday 27 March. Between 6:45pm and 7:00pm there will be representatives from all the major tertiary institutions in the Great Hall willing to give advice and information regarding their courses. This will be followed by three 25—minute talks in various classrooms. Students will have the opportunity to hear firsthand from a range of course specialists from the major universities and a TAFE provider. We urge all Year 11 and 12 students to attend. In the weeks preceding you should receive, by mail, a program for the Expo so that you and your son can plan which talks and at what time he would like to attend.

Please note that this is a unique event to Xavier College and is not to be confused with the Year 10 / Year 11 Career Evening which is primarily information about career paths as opposed to University courses.

RECOMMENDED READS FROM THE BRENNAN RESOURCE CENTRE Welcome to Recommended Reads! The Xavier College Resource Centres promote a reading culture which supports and enriches reading for pleasure and develops an appreciation of literature.

Title: Defending Jacob Author: William Landay Publisher: Random House 2012

Andy Barber has been an assistant District Attorney in his suburban Massachusetts County for more than twenty years. He is respected in his community, tenacious in the courtroom, and happy at home with his wife, Laurie, and son, Jacob. But when a shocking crime shatters their New England town, Andy is blindsided by what happens next. Defending Jacob is about a family struggling to hold things together when their teenage son is accused and charged with murder of a fellow student. The question at the

core of this novel is, “How far would you go to protect your child?”

Barber narrates the story with depth and dread, exposing some family secrets along the way, which could impact the case, and create increasing internal trauma for his wife, Laurie. Woven through the story, in the old-school typed transcript of a court reporter, is yet another narrative of Barber as a witness before the grand jury

This is a heart-wrenching legal drama, but it is also a family drama as a marriage threatens to crumble and the crisis reveals how little a father knows about his son. Some issues are raised that would make for good discussion: how far would you go for your child? Is there really a murder gene?

Defending Jacob is an excellent book, one that constantly had me wondering what I would do in similar circumstances.

On 25 February, through previous funding for Content Language Integrated Teaching research and investigation, five teachers, including Mr John Hickey (Director of the Senior Campus), Ms Caroline Sheehan (Director of Teaching & Learning) and representative teachers of French, Italian and Japanese visited International Grammar School, Sydney, to investigate a bilingual education school. All students at IGS study for 80 minutes per day one of three languages: French, Italian or Japanese throughout their primary education. Teachers observed bilingual classes between Foundation (Prep) and Grade 6, and were impressed to hear that almost 60% of students graduate IGS with a foreign language. Xavier College currently has a Year 10 level CLIL (Partial-immersion) Geography Class offered only in Japanese.

CRICKET—MICHAEL VANDENBERG The start to the cricket season in many respects has been a real success; quality staff and old boys are involved in the program including a new addition of our Director of Senior Campus, Mr Hickey (9B Red Coach). With numbers at Year 10 slightly down (in the cricketing cohort) on previous years, it is great to see that some Year 9 boys have helped out by topping up the numbers in that group. Despite a smaller group at Year 10, the seniors have snuck in an extra team which means that numbers are tight, so availability is essential for all of those senior boys. Last weekend saw some incredibly close results with both the 9As and the 9B Reds winning by a solitary run and the 3

rd

XI tying their game on the last ball. The 10As and 2nd

XI have been enjoying a very successful season with only one loss each, which is promising for the future of 1

st XI cricket.

We must congratulate Jack Gilbert (Year 9 Claver) for being selected for the Victorian U15 team to play in Perth and Nicholas Chancellor and Jac O’Shea for achieving centuries in recent 1

st XI games.

VOLLEYBALL—RUSSELL SPINKS After three rounds of volleyball this season Xavier College has had some great successes with the 1sts team securing three wins and is now in fourth position after defeating second-place Scotch College on the weekend. It is one of the closest and tightest fought competitions I can remember. We narrowly lost to top team Caulfield in November in five sets and won against MGS two weeks ago (30-32, 26-24, 25-23, 26-24). The boys have improved their back court skills and along with strong blocking and spiking should see them have more successes. The 2nds have had a really strong start to the season, winning both games. With the boys quickly learning how to position and transition, the team is shaping up to be an incredibly powerful unit—one that could definitely go through the season undefeated. A lot of the boys are developing into fine volleyballers, with some looking to cement a position in the 1st’s next season. The 3rds are developing well this season. The first match against Wesley was a strong win 25/18, 25/12. The game highlighted the boys’ ability to work as a team and showcased control positioning during their serves. The second game was unfortunately lost in straight sets to Wesley 2: 25/21, 25/21. This was an exciting match as the demonstrated their fighting spirit even though they were down. The final set was a true highlight as the boys clawed back six points to try and stay in the match. There are a lot of positives that can be seen from these first two games and The XC Falcons, as they call themselves, should expect a few more wins along the season.

FROM THE DIRECTOR OF SPORT CONT.

The 5ths have suffered a couple of hard-fought, disappointing losses to more drilled and talented teams. Improvement has already been shown, as last week we were able to find ourselves with a couple of set points, but were unable to capitalise. Overall there has been some standout performances by a few individuals whose serving and court play has been very promising. The Year 10A's have had a win and a loss. The interruptions to training because of the heat have limited the development of our court structure. The team has shown great ability and once training establishes better court process we will be hard to beat. The Year 10B team has had two games this term. The first game against Carey Grammar was close with all games within two points. Carey won the game 2 – 1. The second game against MGS showed how hard the boys had been training and we won that game 3 – 0. A great start to the year and a special thanks to the enthusiastic and talented coach, John Burgess. The Year 9A boys have been working hard on individual skills and are coming together as a team. Hopefully, we can see that translate into some success on the scoreboard.

5-A-SIDE SOCCER—IAN THORNTON Futsal or 5- a-side soccer continues to be one of the most popular sports at Xavier College. This year over 70 boys have selected the sport from Year 11 and 12 (the competition is restricted to the senior years). The 1st Five had a narrow loss against Saint Kevin’s College, a draw against Caulfield Grammar and a decisive win against Melbourne Grammar. The 2nd to Eight teams have experienced a mixture of success with some impressive wins at this early stage of the season. I have been impressed with the boys’ commitment and enthusiasm to the sport of Futsal—it has been very impressive. Coach of the 1st and 2nd Five is Mr Ed Peyton, and coaching the remaining teams are Mr Michael Facciolo and Mr David Lorenzi. Futsal Captain for 2013 is Laurence Sorace; with Vice Captains Dean Paganis and Jack Pignata. I am certain 2013 will see Futsal continue to develop as one of the most popular and successful Xavier summer sports.

PARENT COMMUNICATION WITH THE COLLEGE Xavier College continually seeks to improve its communication flow with all members of the Xavier College community.

To achieve this end we ask all parents and guardians to observe the following protocol.

All telephone messages and emails should be addressed to one person only. If parents wish to include other relevant parties in the circulation list, this should be done under the cc heading. Observance of this request will allow the College to coordinate its response efficiently and effectively and thus contribute to a speedy resolution of any concern.

Who is the one person to whom a parent addresses an email? Over a pastoral concern, the tutor should be the contact. Over a learning progress concern, the class teacher should be contacted. If the learning concern occurs in more than one classroom then the tutor should be contacted. Only when these contacts fail to meet resolution or your concern is of a serious nature should Heads of House, Faculty Heads or Senior Administrators be the contact person. (You may, however, choose to cc these people on any communication you have with the College.)

Thank you for your anticipated co-operation with this request.
