Last Sunday we celebrated Pentecost, the coming of the Spirit upon the early disciples. We are told in the second chapter of the Acts of the Apostles that the disciples were given the ability to speak in other languages and told the gathered crowds about God’s deeds of power. In many ways, it is the beginning of the church as the early believers overcome their fears and are empowered to preach the Good News; that through God’s love exemplified in the death and resurrection of his Son, we are all saved and offered the gift of eternal life. Christ, our light, once more prevails and that sin and death are not the final answers. Throughout the Easter season I have been reflecting upon the experience of the early Church. I have explored numerous times with my Year 12 Religion class that I cannot prove empirically to them that the resurrection is true. I then go on to explore with them the transformation of the early disciples and how this points to the fact that something extraordinary did happen. The early disciples go from fear to courage in preaching that Jesus is risen and is in fact the Messiah. For us as Christians we too are called to be people who give witness to Jesus’ resurrection; this is what our life of Christian discipleship is all about. Fortunately we are not called to do it alone but rather with each other, as a member of a community that believes in the Easter story. FROM THE PRINCIPAL

Christopher Hayes Principal

Dear Parents and Guardians Last week I attended the very entertaining and polished Burke Hall musical The Wizard of Oz. Congratulations to Ms Leonie Hurry and the cast on breathing new life into a classic musical. The smiles on the faces of the cast and musicians were priceless! Xavier College featured significantly last week in the With a Voice of Singing Sacred Choral Music concert at Hamer Hall. Mrs Jane Wood was the Music Director, Mr Richard O’Shaughnessy was script writer and fifty of our boys joined the massed choir of over 500 students from Catholic Secondary Schools in the Archdiocese. The College is very proud to have played a role in this inspiring performance and congratulations to Jane Wood for leading this brilliant celebration. Online Social Networking Occupying a good deal of my time in recent weeks has been the inappropriate use of social networking sites such as Facebook. The reality for young people online is that Facebook is the second most commonly used online site next to Google. The social media has become an integral part of young peoples’ lives. Some important issues include - • For parents to know, and understand, social media and social networking sites like Facebook. • It is crucial that parents not take a good Vs bad stance regarding interactions between teenagers.

Instead, parents should understand that they are a major influence in their teens' lives. Therefore, they must comprehend and educate their children about the effects, both positive and negative, of this new world.

• Keep in mind that while your teen, and your pre-teen, too, is highly tech savvy and they understand that perception is everything, they probably don't know who is accessing their profile. Though it won't fix every potential problem, insist on bearing witness to your child's privacy settings if they have a Facebook page.

• Many parents, and employers, try to block Facebook although studies show that this rarely helps as computer access is everywhere. Parents must realise that blocking a website, such as Facebook, makes the forbidden a lot more tempting. A better strategy is to set boundaries and regulations, and then monitor usage.

• Clarify what's appropriate, and what is not - this is one of the most important discussions that you must have with your children. Make sure that they clearly understand what is appropriate on social media pages, and what is not. They need to understand that they can use their Facebook profile in a positive way. Don't be afraid to repeat the discussion about what is appropriate periodically as many parents mistakenly assume their teen understood the rules, only to find out later with sad consequences that they really did not.

• Your children need to understand the ramifications of what they put forth into cyberspace. Too often people who use Facebook assume that what they put on Facebook is only on Facebook. It's important that your children understand that cyberspace is a real place. Show your children how to build their reputation both offline and online. As a parent you can teach them the powerful skill of authentic personal branding.

• Many teens are afraid to untag themselves from material they find offensive. This is a whole new realm of peer pressure. It is important to let your teen know that it is not bad etiquette to untag yourself from notes, pictures or anything else they don't agree with. They also need to understand that it is not bad to request someone to completely remove pictures for whatever reason. Empower them to take full responsibility for themselves, their reputations and media featuring them. Encourage them to be proactive and the end result will be a positive experience in the social media world www.surfnetkids.com/safety/facebook/

Blessings and peace for the coming week.

FROM THE DIRECTOR OF KOSTKA HALL

J.F.Fox Director of Kostka Hall

Each Tuesday morning we celebrate Mass in the Kostka War Memorial Chapel at 8.20 am. You are invited to Mass on Tuesday 8 June at which we will celebrate the life of Brother Kevin McDonald as a Jesuit and in particular his 25 years devotion to Kostka Hall. (Please see below an article on Brother McDonald sourced from the Australian Catholics Province Express dated 14 April 2010) http://www.express.org.au/article.aspx.

Dedicated to God 14-APR-2010 Australian Jesuits last week joined other friends and family in remembering Brother Kevin McDonald SJ, who died in Sydney on 31 March at the age of 81. Kevin had been a Jesuit Brother for nearly 55 years. Born in Yorkshire, England, he emigrated to Australia as a young man and joined the Australian Province at the age of 26. His novitiate was spent at Loyola, Watsonia, in Melbourne where with his fellow English Brother John Stamp SJ, he adjusted to the ways of Australian novices but continued to follow the fortunes of Halifax Town Football Club. After his vows he spent five years at Watsonia as cook for the very large community - over a hundred - a task which he carried out with his characteristic cheerfulness. He was then transferred to Campion Hall, Kew, where he was cook for a much smaller number and involved in carpentry. In 1965 he did tertianship at the Jesuit theologate at Pymble and then joined the staff as cook and expert on machinery. In 1970 he was sent as Sub-minister to St Louis, the Jesuit school in Perth. In 1974 he returned to Melbourne, where he was on the staff of Kostka Hall, one of the preparatory schools for Xavier College. There he taught religion, coached sport - including the soccer team - and was assistant prefect. The boys loved his Yorkshire accent and he was devoted to their welfare, exercising a great influence on them. He was on the staff for 22 years in all, a signal contribution to Jesuit education by a Jesuit Brother. In 1995 Kevin was moved to Canisius College, Pymble, no longer a theologate but a novitiate, retreat house and home for retired Jesuits. There he assisted the Minister and kept the ample grounds in perfect order. As his health deteriorated, and his memory slipped away, he was unable to continue in these tasks, but he continued his dedication to his faith and love of the Lord.

Parents’ Association Major Fundraiser I warmly encourage parents and friends to attend the Kostka Parents’ Association major fundraiser on Saturday 19 June. (One for the diary!). I am currently negotiating with the Parents’ Association on a wish list of items to which their fundraising efforts would be directed. I think the key criterion is to ensure that such funds directly benefit the boys and girls of Kostka Hall and I am grateful for the parents’ hard working efforts in this regard.

A reminder that any student photographs which you do not wish to purchase should be returned directly to the to National Photography for a full refund. Their details are as follows: National School Photography

PO Box 3001 North Burnley 3121

NB. No refunds will be made for photos unless received within 14 days of delivery to the school. Semester One Sport Photos The Year 7 & 8 Semester 1 Sports Photos will be taken on Thursday 4 June. Would parents please ensure that your son brings his sports gear on that day – correct and clean gear (as per the Uniform List in the Diary). Winter Sports Uniform With the change in sport to winter games, students must be aware of the uniform requirements for their sports. In particular, the correct shorts, socks and tracksuit pants must be worn. The correct uniform requirements are found in the Student Diary. Once again all articles of the sports uniform must be clearly named. A reminder that the new ‘Rugby’ style jumper is NOT a replacement for the spray jacket which is the official external garment on sports days. It should be worn between the T shirt and the spray jacket and should not be worn as the outer garment travelling to or from school. This item of clothing for students in Years 5 - 8 is optional. Absentees A reminder to all parents of the importance of advising the school if a student is absent on any particular day. Please contact the school office prior to 9.30am to confirm your child's absence. A written confirmation of your child's absence is also required upon their return to school (addressed to their respective homeroom teacher/s). Your assistance with this matter is greatly appreciated. Order of Day – Semester Two As was communicated by Mr Fox recently, we will be moving to a new order of day in Term 3. To assist with this change Tuckshop food will be made available during both breaks from the beginning of Term 3. A ‘recess’ menu has been included in this newsletter for your reference. This will be in addition to the ‘lunch’ menu on offer, which will still be available from the new time of 1.20 pm. An informal ‘eating’ time is also being incorporated at all levels during periods 2 & 4 prior to each break in class under teacher supervision. We are currently looking at a 10 minute allocation for Early Years Children (P-4) and 5-10 minutes for Middle Years. It is hoped that this will also assist the students in their transition to the new order of the day. School Assembly Our final school assembly for Semester One will be held on June 8 at 9.00am in Manresa Hall. This assembly will be conducted by the LOTE department and is always a highlight of the year. Parents are most welcome to attend our school assemblies as they are an integral part of the celebration of learning and tradition of our school. Assembly dates are published on the College Calendar via the community portal throughout the year. Greg Gaudie - Deputy Head Xavier College—Kostka Hall

FROM THE XAVIER SOCIAL JUSTICE DESK

Can you help us? A JOURNEY TO SOCIAL INCLUSION (J2SI) is a Sacred Heart Mission pilot program that is aiming to break the cycle of chronic homelessness for 40 people. A number of people with whom the Mission has been working, have been allocated housing and are supporting them with the transition from long term homelessness to being housed. One of the challenges is making their new houses into homes as illustrated by the following quotes. “How do I make it feel like home?” “I have not lived in a house for a long time so how will I manage?” “I won’t be able to afford to decorate it.” XSJN members, Annie Whitelegg, Caroline Abbey and I met with the project managers of J2S1and it seems that it would be great if some of our more creative Mums could meet with these clients in an atmosphere of sewing and chatting, and make curtains, cushion covers, etc. If this sounds like YOU, and you have a sewing machine handy, please send an email to either Annie at [email protected] or myself (see below). Much has been happening in the world of Curriculum this Term. We have just completed the NAPLAN tests in Years 3, 5 and 7 last week. The testing proceeded smoothly and without major incident. The teachers conducted the tests according to instructions and the students, resigned to their fate, seemed calm. The results usually arrive at the end of Term Three. These tests are designed to test the Reading, Writing and Numeracy areas of the curriculum. It is important to remember that it is one source of academic information collected over a few days. I encourage Parents to contact their child’s teacher if they have any queries or concerns, noting that they collect information over many months. On Tuesday 18 May the staff from Kostka Hall worked with the staff from Burke Hall. The Early Years’ areas worked together while the Middle Years also met and planned together. Sessions like this are incredibly important to ensure that the collaborative planning process across both campuses fosters a one school approach. One of the main topics for the Middle Years was to update and build upon existing rubrics. With the explicit teaching of Thinking Skills in our curriculum the need to add extra criteria is important in assessing all aspects of student work. Therese Lunghusen Curriculum Coordinator

Email, chat, IM, video calling and texting are fast and convenient ways to communicate. But the fundamentals – what we say, when we say it, and why we say it – are the same online and off. Common courtesy and common sense are important parts of all communication, regardless of where and how it takes place. What can you do? Talk to your children about online manners. • Politeness counts. You teach your children to be polite offline; talk to them about being courteous

online as well. Texting may seem fast and impersonal, yet courtesies like “pls” and “ty” (for please and thank you) are common text terms.

• Tone it down. Using all caps, long rows of exclamation points, or large bolded fonts are the online

equivalent of yelling. Most people don’t appreciate a rant. • Cc: and Reply all: with care. Suggest that you children resist the temptation to send a message to

everyone on their contact list. • Avoid chain letters. Most chain letters or emails are nuisances at best, and scams at worst. Many

carry viruses or spyware. Ask your children not to open or forward them. Set high privacy preferences on your kids’ Instant messaging (IM) and video calling accounts. Most IM programs allow parents to control whether people on their kids’ contact list can see their IM status, including whether they’re online. Some IM and email accounts allow parents to determine who can send their kids messages, and block anyone not on the list. Ask your children who they’re in touch with online. Just as you want to know who your children friends are offline. It’s a good idea to know who they’re talking to online. Talk to your children about using strong email passwords and protecting them. The longer the password, the harder it is to crack. Personal information, your login name, common words, or adjacent keys on the keyboard are not safe passwords. Children can protect their passwords by not sharing them with anyone, including their friends. Remind your children to protect their personal information. Social security numbers, account numbers and passwords are examples of information to keep private.

EARLY YEARS’ NEWS

Having made the transition from the home to the early learning setting during Term One, our twenty-four Magdalena Class Children have continued to settle soundly into life in the Kindergarten at Kostka Hall during Term Two. For many of the children, experiences and interactions during the first three years of life have centred upon the immediate and extended family. So it has been wonderful to see each student begin to make connections with other children in the class group during this first part of the year. ‘Connecting’ is a vital component of this first year of Kindergarten - associating with other children of the same age and feeling a sense of ‘belonging’. Inside the classroom and outdoors in the playground, the children are further developing a range of abilities and attempting new experiences as their confidence grows. Every small step that a child takes is celebrated, from using scissors for the first time to forming a new friendship. This term the children are particularly enjoying participating in dramatic re-enactments of ‘Fairy Tales’ , their favourite being “The Ginger Bread Man”. The children delight in taking turns in assuming roles as one of the characters using puppets. Play of this type is rich in developing language and social skills and importantly, is an overall enjoyable experience to undertake as a group. Outside the children have immensely enjoyed creating a garden patch and continue tending to it on a daily basis. Using water from the water tank and rakes to keep the area neat, the class has watched with fascination as sunflower seeds, daffodil bulbs, pansies, poppies and daisies have emerged from the soil. A project of this nature fosters many skills, in particular an appreciation of nature, observation and responsibility. Another highlight of the term was our ‘Mothers’ Day Morning Visit’

which occurred in Week Five. The c h i l d r e n w e r e d e l i g h t e d t o welcome our special visitors into the classroom and explore the learning environment together. As we venture into the second half of the term and as we look ahead into the next half of the year, we look forward to watching the children continue to blossom in their own unique way/s. CEO DRAMA FESTIVAL As part of the Drama curriculum the Year 5 students have been studying performance skills. The school has been invited to participate in the 2010 CEO Student Wellbeing Drama Festival held in June. The festival aims to promote the well being of all students in the school community with particular emphasis on the promotion of student resilence. This is a wonderful opportunity for students to gain confidence performing in front of an audience and to work as a team in a creative environment. The following students will perform on 22 June at the Whitehorse Centre, Nunawading. We would like to wish them all the very best as they prepare for their performance at the Whitehorse Centre.

The Power of Prayer The Year 5 Religion class have been participating in a unit called ‘The Power of Prayer’. Students have Studied a range of prayers including prayers of praise, sorrow, petition, intercession and thanksgiving. Students have been required to write their own prayers. Once completed the prayers will be put together to form a Year 5 Prayer book. Here are two prayers which were written by Sam Mack and Edward Ralph from 5 Canisius.

Prayer of Praise

Dear Lord, You are the earth, the sun, the mountains, the clouds, and the rain. You are all the emotions and movement on the earth. You have two homes heaven with Jesus, and on earth inside all of us. You forgive me when I sin, as well as forgive others when they sin. You are the reason of all life and death on the earth. You showed us the afterlife in the heavens through your beloved son Jesus Christ. You are the father of the world, your greatest creation. You are the shared laughter, love and tears on the earth. You guide us through everyday life and choices. You are the fruit and fresh food on the Earth, your’e all our daily needs to stay alive in the world as we await a joyful afterlife with you in heaven. Amen Sam Mack Year 5C

A Prayer for the World Dear God, Thank you for this lovely environment you have made for everyone in this world. Thank you for my friends and family because they are always there for me when I am in trouble or lonely. Thank you God for bringing me to a great school where I can learn and make lots of new friends. Thank you God for all the tasty food that we can enjoy eating and the cosy and safe homes we can live in. I pray that everyone has a safe and happy future and that they can live with lots of love and peace. Amen Edward Ralph

NEWS FROM YEARS SEVEN AND EIGHT

It never ceases to amaze me as to how busy and varied the programme at Kostka Hall is. Our Year Eight students are currently engaged in their Twilight Retreat Programme at Billilla. These experiences have been enjoyable, valuable and enriching for our students in the past and they have also provided the staff, parents and students with valuable insights into a wide variety of matters. I have no doubt that the programme this year will also be of great value to all involved. I thank Mr Callinan, Mrs Fitzpatrick & Mrs McLaughlin–Troup for their efforts in ogranising these events. The Year Eights were also lucky enough to participate in a recent Science incursion, Cool Chemical, a highly enjoyable and beneficial session as well. Thanks to Ms Dempsey for the organising of this event. On Tuesday 25 May the Year Eights will travel to the Senior Campus to view a production of The Clown form Snowy River, by deBase Productions. This should be a memorable experience and a reminder that the students need to make their own way to the Senior Campus in full winter uniform. At the conclusion of the event we will bus them back to Kostka Hall. Thanks to Ms McLennan for the organising of this event. Our Year Seven students are currently fully involved in the Billilla programme as well as numerous assignments and unit tests. It is perhaps timely to remind students of the importance of thorough organization when extremely busy programmes are the norm. At present many boys at Kostka Hall are availing themselves of the wide range of extra-curricular activities that we have on offer, including debating, musical rehearsals, musical ensembles and bands and sporting activities. As well, it is common for boys to be involved in external sporting and musical groups and this adds further pressure to an already crowded schedule. It should not be forgotten that each Monday from 3.30pm until 5.00pm we have the Homework Club available for all students to attend in the Bellarmine Library. I commend this option to all students. Each week teachers supervise this activity and they are most willing to assist any student in whatever way they can. The need for a regular timetable to complete homework is essential as well as time to conduct revision of work already completed. The recommendation at Kostka Hall is that each student spends 90 minutes each night and 90 minutes over the course of the weekend on homework. This should include all set tasks as well as instrumental practice. Reading for pleasure should be encouraged in addition to the recommended homework time. Recently Mr Drummond gave me a book, Wolf Hall, by Hilary Mantel. It is a great read and it brings to life in vivid detail the court of Tudor England, it reminds me that there are some great books available for our boys to read and that they come in a wide range of genres, something for everyone! Finally, it was a joy and privilege to see Chris Stevenson back at Kostka Hall on his transition to work programme last week. He worked closely with Ms Tomkins and many other staff, his efforts were appreciated by all. Jerry Mulcahy Year 7 and 8 Coordinator

NEW BUILDING AT BURKE HALL Sited immediately to the north of the Gervasoni Oval, the forthcoming Year 5 & 6 Classroom Wing will provide a much needed boost to the building stocks at the Burke Hall Campus. The building is ideally sited with a north/south orientation and will employ a range of energy-saving initiatives including rain-water harvesting, waterless urinals, low-energy light fittings, sensor-operated lights, night "purging" through methods such as openable high louvre windows, thermal mass, shade plantings and solar panels. Level 1, which is on grade with the Gervasoni oval, provides two large general purpose spaces, toilets and storage space. Level 2 houses a general purpose classroom, a meeting room, seminar room, Science/Home Economics room and a special purpose classroom. Level 3 provides for five classrooms, a large project activity space, staff and student toilets, staff offices and a store. Level 4 above is a mirror image of Level 3, with the addition of a north-facing balcony. We expect all classrooms to be equipped with modern teaching aids such as electronic white boards and data projectors. An important feature of both Levels 3 and 4 is that all rooms are interlinked through either retractable operable walls, or the project activity space, allowing for flexibility and creativity in teaching and learning experiences. Funding has been provided in part through the Federal Government's Building the Education Revolution economic stimulus package, as well as the generosity of the Condon Bequest. A Capital Appeal is being held in 2010 in order to attain the level of funding required to ensure the building provides the very best educational environment for our students at Burke Hall. XAVIER SOCIAL JUSTICE NETWORK ST MARY’S HOUSE OF WELCOME WINTER DRIVE Each year we ask our Kostka families to support our winter drive for St. Mary’s House of Welcome. St Mary’s is a day centre in Fitzroy that provides meals and assistance to many of Melbourne’s homeless and those living in poverty. As the cold weather approaches, please spare a thought for the many people who face cold winter nights on the street. We can help out by donating: * Adult size coats and jackets * Clean blankets (old or new) * Concession MET tickets * Clean winter socks (in good condition, no threadbare numbers please) * New underwear in packaging (we cannot accept second hand underwear) * Scarves, gloves and beanies * Mugs for the centre We hope to have Sister Roseanne from St. Mary’s House of Welcome visit Kostka again this year to talk about St. Mary’s and their need for our warm blankets, clothing and other donations. Donations can be placed in the marked boxes in the EYC or left at reception. MET tickets should be left at the front office in a clearly marked envelope “St Mary’s House of Welcome”. Donations are very welcome now, and will be collected until Friday 18 June. If you need any further information, please contact Carolyn Abbey (0417332581). Thanks for your support in helping others stay warm over winter.
