I would like to thank our Parish Priest Father Joe, Assistant Priest Father Anthony, Principal Cathie Bauer and
Deputy Principals Giselle Konle and David Hamersley plus the wonderful, dedicated and committed teaching and
support staff.
It has been a pleasure working with the school leadership team and administration staff throughout 2018. As we can
all appreciate, a progressive and modern school like ours needs the continual support and guidance from a range of
people within the school community and our School Board is no different, having many committed members from
different walks of life who have our children’s interests at heart. They are also supported by Father Joe, Father
Anthony, a representative from the P & F executive and the Parish Council.
Combine our wonderful learning environment for our school beginners and the Out of Hours School care it is
clearly evident that we are on a winner, not only in increasing student numbers but through quality teaching at all
levels.

To start this year we had a full complement of 6 Board members but during the First term Fiona Cooke had to
resign due to an increased work schedule. We were still able to have our planned meetings each month with a
delicious supplied supper by Cathie and the school.
Our Principal, Cathie once again has proven to provide the school with her passion, genuine and generous
commitment to do what is best for Xavier each day that has seen the Out of School care flourish and continue to be
successful.
To our office staff, Robyn Kelly who does a fantastic job with the financial side of running our school, Gretal Cardoz
who is always there to meet people who come into the school with assistance from Karla D’Lima who does a great
job in our public and media relations. Our Groundsmen Richard D’Rozario and John Hatha must be commended
for the way in which you support Xavier in each of your roles. Your kindness and warmth to new and existing
parents plus to our children contributes to our continued success.
I would like to thank Sue Richter for the dedicated and hard work that she does in running our School Canteen with
assistance from Shelley Young and Carlie Richins.
I would like to thank Maureen Moore in our Uniform Shop this year with able assistance from Carol Cresswell. You
have both done a fantastic job.
I would like to thank our most dedicated and loyal teachers and assistants plus our Out of School Hours care
personnel led by Lyn Baxter for making this year so successful.
I would like to thank Father Joe and Father Anthony for their valuable contribution in supporting us not only
spiritually but also in their wisdom. The board are indebted to what you offer and deliver to Xavier.
Once again the P & F have excelled and their contribution to Xavier is nothing short of outstanding. Your ability to
provide morning teas, Teacher’s lunches, catering at School Carnivals and the blockbuster Bingo night this year
combined with your exceptional fund raising activities have provided Xavier with many great interaction
opportunities between our school community and
teaching staff. The many and varied resources that you provide Xavier to extend our children’s learning journeys
are truly appreciated and meaningful.
Carlie and her executive team and the P & F members can be proud of what you have all achieved. Your approach
to also fundraise externally is also acknowledged as this not only reduces financial pressures from within our
Xavier families but also showcases to others the great school community that we are blessed to have.
This year saw the completion of the Stage Four covered walkways around the school.
I would like to thank Cher Spurrier who had to resign from her role as Breakfast Co-ordinator in the first term doe
to a change in her work circumstances. Jayne Smith stepped up into the role in first term and has continued to do a
great job. Breakfast Club has continued to be successful with each Tuesday and Thursday their being an average of
over 40 students. A special thank you to the volunteers for preparing the breakfasts and to the teachers for helping
to supervise the students and creating the various menu options available to the students. (eg The Mr I and Mr
Papp). I would like to thank the students who have volunteered to help with the dishes.
Page 4
I would like to thank Sheralee McGregor who is stepping down from being the Banking Co-ordinator at Xavier for a
number of years. Your enthusiasm and friendliness to our school children and to your role each and every week has
enabled the banking to flourish.
I would also like to thank Trish Ricupero for her role in doing the Book Club over a number of years.
Finally, all our Board Members, Father Joe, Father Anthony, Cathie our Principal, Giselle and David our Assistant
Principals, Gerard Rosman as the Secretary, Sandie Kempton as the Treasurer, Mandie Bowen, Jithesh Madhavan
and Fiona Cooke who have helped in a number of various roles, Carlie Richins as the P & F Executive member and
the Parish Council representative Damien Slattery I can’t thank you enough for your support, knowledge, light
hearted banter and inspiration you have given to the board in 2018.
I would like to thank Fiona Cooke who stepped down this year and has been on the board for 3 years and who has
volunteered on the P & F for a number of year and also looked after the rose pruning at the front of the school.

Agenda Item 8: PRINCIPAL’S REPORT | Responsible Member Cathie Bauer
Cathie Bauer presented the following report:
Xavier Catholic School is developing into a double stream primary school that, when fully two-stream, will
cater for approximately 450 students. Enrolment numbers continue to increase with a current school population
of almost 400 students. The population in the catchment area of Xavier Catholic School is currently estimated
to be around 37,500 people and is forecast to experience a strong growth among all age groups; there is a
forecast increase by 59% between 2017 and 2027. The challenge is how to move the school forward cohesively
with a shared vision and clarity of purpose that is focused on improving the learning outcomes for all students
across the school. In addition, an on-going challenge is keeping Xavier Catholic School’s market share with
competing schools in a rapidly expanding location.
Xavier Catholic School has now begun a more consistent and systematic approach to school improvement by
developing and sharing a vision centred on learning of all students. In the last twelve months there has been a
significant shift in our school in regard to alignment of school processes and structures. We continue to focus
on fostering the development of the whole child, supporting students in developing independent learning
skills, as well as a positive sense of self-worth and achieving their full potential. This is evident through our
strong emphasis on literacy and numeracy specialist support provided across the school including Reading
Recovery taught by Helen Moir; Levelled Literacy Intervention taught by Trish Leeder and the Mathematic
Understanding program taught by Casey Finlay along with on-going support in Literacy and Numeracy
provided by Aoife Johnson. These teachers also provide in-class support for groups or individual students on a
regular basis. I would also like to acknowledge the hard work that Susan Russell has put into coordinating the
Early Years team from Pre-Kindergarten to Pre-primary I thank them all for their leadership and dedication to
assist the teachers in raising the outcomes for all our students.
Page 9
Xavier Catholic School staff are on a shared journey with the aim to develop a school where children, parents
and staff feel welcome, and all students are provided with the knowledge and skills required in a fast-changing
world. We are always looking at ways of implementing continuous improvement through reflective practice.
Recently we have moved to a strength-based approach to building capacity as a way to model and grow
leadership capacity in all staff. This has been well received by the all and we look forward to further exploring
this work collaboratively in 2018. Xavier Catholic School staff agree that positive beliefs and behaviours are
occurring. Our aim is to continue to focus on developing these ideals and continue to facilitate the
reinforcement of this attitude among the staff, both present and future and turn Xavier Catholic School from a
‘good’ to a ‘great’ school.
I would like to acknowledge each and every one of our teachers who continue to support students in their
learning by providing stimulating and challenging learning opportunities in all areas of the curriculum. The
staff at Xavier use teaching and learning strategies that align with a developmental approach. They respect and
value that children learn in different ways and that learning expectations and opportunities may need to be
modified at different stages of development. They spend time getting to know the students well and identify
their particular strengths and challenges so that they may best meet their spiritual, physical, emotional, social
and intellectual needs.
Information Communication Technology (ICT) has been an important focus at Xavier over the past couple of
years. More recently there has been a substantial amount of funds spent on improving the connectivity,
resources, training and teaching of ICT to allow the school to progress with 21st century teaching and learning.
From mid-2015 all teachers were issued with a laptop; at the same time Digital TVs started to replace IWBs in
all classrooms from Years 2 – 6 including Apple TVs; a small bank of ipads were allocated to each year level;
and our Digital Technologies teacher, Giselle Konle, was employed to teach Digital Technologies as a specialist
subject to all students and to lead staff in the DigiTech area. ICT is continuously evolving as the school
continues to go from strength to strength as staff want and dare to experiment and innovate in their practice.
The school supports and recognises staff for taking initiative and risks particularly with the introduction of
Leading Lights.
Xavier Catholic Primary School is a welcoming community with a commitment to supporting all students,
families and staff. A strong relationship exists between the school and parish and reflects the values, vision,
policies and motto of Xavier Catholic School – “Growing in Wisdom”. At the beginning of the year we
launched our Strategic Plan 2017 – 2020 which will guide the next stage of our school’s journey. It outlines the
school’s strategic priorities and the outcomes against which our future performance will be measured.
As a Catholic primary school where all are ‘Growing in Wisdom’ we are committed to being a welcoming,
family focussed community based on Gospel values. In partnership with parents we strive to “Nurture and
enhance the faith and learning of each and every member of the school community.” We continue to help
support the personal faith development of all members in the community through Christian Witness and
Catechesis. Priority also continues to be on an inclusive and welcoming community for all. This includes
increasing enrolment of students from marginalised groups within our community and increasing
opportunities for staff, students and community members to engage in Christian Service.
Through the online Student Gallop Poll taken in March this year, students in Years 5 & 6 indicated that they
were experiencing positive emotions at school, feel connected to the school and feel like they belong at Xavier.
This was evident in their answers that indicated a relatively strong connectedness to school and confidence in
their own learning. The majority of students indicated that they had positive relationships with their peers.
Students also frequently commented on the feeling of safety and community that they feel throughout the
Page 10
school in the staff and other students. The students love the way the teachers all know who they are and show
care and compassion for them.
We follow a Restorative Justice approach when dealing with inappropriate behaviours. As adults we need to
allow our children to be responsible for their own actions and show respect for themselves, others and the
environment. Xavier school promotes a Positive Behaviour Support Program with a whole school focus on
promoting self-control and self-regulation through our SUPER Program. This program is a positive behaviour
management program where students are taught expected behaviours. Students are able to collect SUPER
tickets for demonstrating the key indicators on our school matrix.
Xavier Catholic School offers many services to help support the education and care of our families. These
include the 3-Year-old pre-kindergarten education programme that has been operating every Thursday this
year but at this stage is low on numbers to make a viable start to the beginning of 2018. This program is aimed
at ensuring the best possible start in terms of the children’s readiness for school in all of the educational
domains – social, emotional, physical, intellectual and spiritual. Pre-kindergarten programmes do not attract
any government funding assistance and therefore can only be provided on a user pays full fee system which
we have endeavoured to keep as affordable as possible whilst covering costs.
Outside School Hours Care that operates every school day from 7am to 6pm for families that need this service.
We also operate this service on Pupil Free Days and during Vacation Care but also with viable numbers to
operate. I thank Lyn Baxter as the Supervising Officer with Rhiannon, Zara and Jess for providing this value for
money, on-site service that is home-away-from-home for many of our families!
Mums and Bubs Playgroup that runs on Tuesday mornings from 9 – 11am for ALL interested families
(including Dads and grandparents who have attended) with children from birth to 4 Years of age. Families
attend our Playgroup to make new friends, learn some skills and have fun with their children. I thank Trish
Leeder for her stories, games, activities and music that she shares to support this family friendly group in our
school.
Breakfast Club that has been operating for almost 18 months every Tuesday and Thursday of the school terms
supplying a good healthy breakfast for those who may otherwise go without or have something not as
nutritious. It is also a great source of social training for our students as they sit together at tables with support
from our staff volunteers. This service is sponsored by the Make A Difference Foundation in partnership with
IGA, Westfield and The Good Guys, Cockburn. Breakfast Club is run by a volunteer coordinator and parent
volunteers. I would like to sincerely thank Cher Spurrier for her coordination of the breakfast club menu,
shopping and volunteers. Special thanks to the wonderful band of helpers who have been consistently there to
supply this service to our children in the mornings and to the staff members who also consistently volunteer to
supervise and support this service in their own time. WE NEED MORE parent helpers to continue and would
love to have your support.
Homework Club has been very successful since we began at the beginning of the school year. Thanks to our
dedicated staff who stay behind an extra hour to ensure your children have a space to complete their work and
assistance if they need it. Thanks to Julia Grant for her coordination and to the staff who are mostly there every
week to help the children.
I would especially like to acknowledge here the many staff members who volunteer for
the multitude of extra-curricular options available to our students including Dance Troupe, Before School sport
training for Netball, soccer and footy along with Interschool sport training at many other times when the need
arises. Your generosity is appreciated.
Page 11
I would like to take this opportunity to especially thank our Assistant Principals, David and Giselle for their
professionalism, guidance and the knowledge that they all bring to the running of the school. Their hard work
and dedication are truly appreciated as well as their support of the pastoral needs of our school community. I
would also like to acknowledge the hard work of Helen Moir, Casey Finlay, Susan Russell and Aoife Johnson
as key leaders of the Literacy learning area and members of our Curriculum Team.
I also add my thanks to what Damien has already said to Gretal, Robyn and Karla. I also welcome our School
Counsellor, Beth Bellotti and look forward to her continued support of our students and their families. To ALL
of you I say a BIG THANKS.
As a school community, we are truly grateful for the wonderful help received by ALL helpers and volunteers
who have contributed in any way to the functioning of Xavier School in 2017. Thank you especially to the team
of dedicated parents who help with changing the reading books in the classrooms, with a special thanks to Kate
Grljusich for her organisation of this important part of our Literacy program. We also thank those who assist at
sporting events, those who go on excursions, and everyone who shows their support for the many other
activities and functions in the school year. We truly appreciate everyone’s contributions especially those that go
unnoticed.
I would also like to acknowledge the volunteer assistance of our School Banking Coordinator, Sherelee
McGregor for providing the banking Commonwealth Banking service for our school families. This is a great
service that assists with teaching children financial literacy and to be responsible for their own saving.
I thank and acknowledge the Xavier P&F for their fundraising, community events and activities. They are
supported and helped in the great work that they do by some of the Class reps. We are really grateful to YOU
all.
Thank you to each and every one of the members of the School Board who assisted with the financial decision-
making and management of the school this year. Members of the Board work to support all children at Xavier
school and their commitment and support is indicative of the family atmosphere and Catholic ethos that we
engender. Damien has already acknowledged the hard work and commitment of our 2017 School Board
members and I too add my sincere THANKS for your time and commitment. I would like to personally
acknowledge the unwavering support of Ben D’Lima who not only was the School Board secretary but also
attended most of the site meetings for building Stages 3 & 4, was on our staffing interview panels and a valued
member of our IT committee. Not to mention security patrol and night callout when alarms go off. I can’t thank
you enough Ben for the hours you put into helping our community.
Again, this year, the collaboration and collegiality between the three Catholic schools (Salvado CC and St John
Bosco CC) and the Chi Rho programme of our parish has set a great tone for the growing Sacramental
programme. Everyone works together to support the Sacramental programs of our parish. We are grateful to
Father Kaz, for your ongoing pastoral support and the parishioners of the St Francis Xavier Parish for
welcoming our families at the special Masses throughout the year.
Xavier Catholic School was founded by the Sisters of Mercy in 1938 on Third Road in Armadale. We therefore
look forward to celebrating our eightieth anniversary in a big celebration next year.
Before I announce the teachers for 2018 I would like to remind our families that EVERY staff member is here for
your children. WE understand that everything doesn’t always go as planned - it is our human nature – but WE
ARE HERE for YOUR children – we care about each one – their safety, happiness and well-being and we want
Page 12
the best for them too just as you do. Class composition will be based on academic, social, emotional and
behavioural indicators of each student to support where they will work best with which other students and
teacher. It is important that parents/guardians allow the Principal and teachers who have the experience,
knowledge and expertise to decide what class grouping and teacher is best for your child. Every teacher brings
their own uniqueness to the classroom and it is this diversity that assists your children to be the best people
they can be. All teachers are hard-working and dedicated so please let your children grow, develop and build
resilience for the many times in their life when they will have to adjust to change.
Staffing for 2019 was presented.
Thank you, God bless and all the very best for the festive season that is soon to be upon us.

Agenda Item 10: P&F PRESIDENT ’S REPORT | Responsible Member Carlie Richins
Carlie Richins presented the following report:
Good evening Everyone,
Our aim as P&F's members is "to provide a forum to assist the education of our children and to support the school
in any way possible". This includes the traditional role of fundraising, but it is also about building and keeping the
school community together – in meetings and through the various functions we have through the year, where
parents can interact, contribute, socialize and provide support for each other
I have been asked many times by many people ‘why do you do it?’ or another question is ‘how do you do it?’ in
relation to my role as a
P & F member, as the AGM was fast approaching & I have had to stand in front of you all, it has made me think
more about my role & the why’s.
Even thinking about it, I’m still not sure at times how I do it, but the reason I do it is for the children.
Ash & I have four children at Xavier, and at times we are hectic & extremely pushed for time, but our children love
it. I guess like any investment the more you put in, the more you get back and if my involvement in the P&F can
help to make the School a better place, both for our children, and for all your children then it is time & effort well
spent. I feel great to be part of ‘the team’, and to know that our little ‘bit’ is helping to make a difference.
I have met some wonderful people at Xavier who are positive and generous with their time and their skills, and
who are motivated to help make Xavier a School we are proud of.
I would like to take this opportunity to name some of these people who have contributed.
Sheralee McGregor & Trish Ricupero – who have given endless time & efforts for our school banking & book club.
without all your efforts it would not be as successful as it is. Thank you!
Our current P&F Executive committee, these ladies have been so supportive & helpful to me this last year.
Page 13
Tracy Furk – Vice President, who has been by my side every step of the year, Tracy will step down at the end of
this year to move the children to Roleystone – wishing Cody, Shianne all the very best.
Sheree Namnik – Secretary, has been on hand all year with updates & making sure all information has been shared.
Sheree will also step down to become our new banking lady & will share this new role with newbies to Xavier
Danelle.
Monica Henry – Treasurer, the best we’ve had. Monica will continue the financial role through 2019.
Also, a special mention about our Class Representatives & Book Exchange Parents.
Charelle, Debbie, Mary, Melissa, Dannielle, Hanna, Clare, Jen, Bela, Teresa, Emma, Rochelle, Shelley, Gerard,
Szilvia, Damien, Sheralee. to our other committee members – a BIG THANKYOU, every little bit helps & without
you the P&F would not be possible.
We have had some great events this year the movie night, 80th Birthday celebrations, the bouncy fun morning, our
traditional Easter, Mother’s Day & Father’s Day events, Disco, 80’s Bingo, Teachers Appreciation Lunch & many
other fundraisers – all these & many more from previous years & other parents’ efforts have helped get us to our
biggest accomplishment yet.
The PERISHER VALLEY – The new playground – it’s almost there, there is a few things that will be added over
the Christmas break however we have all pushed & worked extremely hard to have it ready for our year 6
graduates.
Finally, Our new Executive Committee for 2019 is – Danielle Chapman as Vice President, Secretary – Cherelle
Ranieri & Treasurer – Monica Henry, I will continue as President.
We ask only that everyone contributes when, if and what they can to the P&F – whether that be a little time, ideas,
or financially. As with
most organizations like ours we rely totally on the help and time of volunteer parents.
