Here, love is not merely words like most songs, but rather involves real suffering. Movie: Poetry in Motion: 100 Years of Zanzibar’s Nadi Ikhwan Safaa BUDA 860260 / € 10,95 / 3341348602608 / label: Buda Musique / format: DVD / Zanzibar – Taarab

‘Poetry in Motion’ explores the music, poetry, history and personalities of the esteemed East African orchestra Ikhwan Safaa. Performers of taraab (poetry sung in Swahili), Nadi Ikhwan Safaa (“The True Brotherhood Club”) celebrated its 100

th anniversary in 2005, making it one of the oldest orchestras in the world today.

African orchestral music is largely unknown, falling, as it does, outside the popular perceptions of African music. The film offers a music and poetry-driven narrative of a musical club that survived colonialism and violent revolution, and yet always managed to celebrate the joys and challenges of life. Watch this clip.

Sampo Lassila Narinkka: In Strange Lands – Vierailla Mailla NARI 2 / € 10,75 / 6420114002549 / label: Narinkaattori Records / format: CD / Finland – Klezmer

The second album of the Finnish suomiklezmer-trio has a strong current theme: the touching destinies of Finns moving abroad from Finland - and on the other hand, the moving immigrant destinies in Finland. The trio’s style between neoklezmer and Nordic blues is going onwards and deeper. The trio with double bass, viola pomposa and accordion is also reinforced with surprising Finnish concrete sounds. An egg-slicer, old milkchurn, rosty rake, Nokia rubber boots, preparated sitra and old liquorice box among other creative sounds can be heard on the album not to mention the diverse technical styles of playing the trio’s main instruments. Their first album of subtle Finnish klezmer Suomiklezmer (NARI 1) was well received in the Benelux in 2013. Listen to a live track.

Cabruera: Colors of Brazil TUMI 239 / € 10,80 / 5022627023922/ label: Tumi / format: 2-CD / Brazil – Urban

"Cabruêra" refers to a bunch of goats or "Lampiano" in Portuguese, who often chew whatever they can find in the struggle to survive in the desert of north east Brazil. Cabruêra is a unique Brazilian group with a rich music scene beyond bossa and samba. Cabruêra spices up the rural rhythms with all the urban styles you love to groove to and see themselves as the wild goats who chew all different cultures and rhythms such as coco, ciranda, embolado, forro, maracatu and samba and urban styles from rock to funk, rap and electro, and by mixing them all up they produce a wonderful sound. Listen here.

Un Traguito Mas: Adondequiera S 66434 / € 8,50 / 3700089664342 / label: Playa Sound / format: CD / Latin - Folk

Love, anger, nostalgia, alcohol: Un Traguito Mas explores the dramatic qualities of popular songs of Latin America and Southern Europe: from the Portuguese fado to the Mexican drinking song, passing by pieces from Argentina, Italy and Greece. Adrienne Winling’s warm, deep voice interacts thrillingly with the bold, sensitive playing of Antoine Girard’s accordion. With the album Adondequiera the duo brings to life moving tales of ordinary men and women faced with joy, love, grief or jealousy. Listen to the album teaser. Nizar Rohana Trio: Furat LLR 43 / € 9,55 / 9789077672266 / label: Lop Lop / format: CD / Middle East – trad. / modern class.

Nizar Rohana is a Palestinian oud player currently based in the Netherlands distinguished for combining virtuosity within fresh contemporary compositions, while maintaining the oud’s idiomatic language. The trio (completed with Matyas Szandai on double bass and Wassim Halal on percussion) took the river Euphrates – Furat in Arabic – as a starting point. The album’s seven pieces continue along Nizar’s journey in exploring new possibilities for the oud, where its idiomatic character is advanced through new compositions, fresh structures, melodies and expressions. The civilizations and peoples that have lived along the river's course provide the themes for the song titles, from the Syrian city of Mayādīn to the ancient ruins of Al-Dālya, between the willow trees along its banks and through the Jūrjīnā rhythm cherished in Iraq. Listen to this track.

YANTRA: A Journey Through Timelessness IFR 518 / € 9,95 / 0888174812427 / label: Indigo Fusion Rec. / format: CD / Various – a capella

YANTRA is the unusual project of three singers from very different backgrounds, united by their passion of unaccompanied human voice. Born from an experimental session for BBC 3’s Late Junction in 2009, YANTRA’s focal point is the intersection of incomparable singing traditions. Combining the purity of a cappella with modern mutli-tracking recording techniques, their rich vocal fusion explores the spiritual and folkloric music from the traditional and ancient music heritage of Bulgaria, India and England. Singers Eugenia Georgieva from Bulgaria (Perunika Trio), Tamil vocalist Manickam Yogeswaran (sang in Kubrick’s Eyes Wide Shut and Spike Lee’s 25

th Hour) and basso profundo Jeremy Birchall from England (The Shout, performed in

many Hollywood films) evoke a world of sound unknown to our ears. Listen to the opening track.

Expected 6 May:

Carla Pires: Aqui OCA 38 / € 10,95 / 0643070995144 / label: Ocarina / format: CD / Portugal – Fado

The Portuguese fado singer Carla Pires releases her third solo album album "Aqui" (after "Ilha do Meu Fado" (2005) and "Rota das Paixões" (2011)). "Aqui" is here and now. It is Portugal and the world seen through the eyes - and the senses – of a singer who not only sings about matters of today but also about matters of yesterday and tomorrow, what is local and universal, what unites us and separates us, what was left to celebrate that it is increasingly necessary to celebrate, to remember and to think. Pires sings about the city of Lisbon - feminine, free, diverse - where so many sounds meet fado, like tango or samba. Her voice has enchanted audiences around the world and on this album continues to do so, incorporating this broader view on the world in her songs. Listen to Carla Pires live.

Expected 27 May:

M.A.K.U. Soundsystem: Mezcla GBCD 34 / € 10,95 / 4030433603420 / format: CD / label: Glitterbeat / Colombia – Popular

M.A.K.U. Soundsystem: Mezcla GBLP 34 / € 13,95 / 4030433603413 / format: CD / label: Glitterbeat / Colombia – Popular

M.A.K.U Soundsystem is a visceral, politically charged 8-piece band based in New York City, with most of its members hailing from Colombia. M.A.K.U draws on both traditional Afro-Colombian rhythms such as cumbia, as well as a mosaic of other genres: afrobeat, punk, hip-hop, and jazz. "We not only take our cultures with us," says M.A.K.U singer Liliana Conde, who immigrated to the US in 2001 and went to high school in New York, "but we also pick up on everything that surrounds us.” Mezcla is a relentlessly honest record. The music hits the feet and the hips, powerful and overwhelming, while the lyrics reflect the lives the band members live. There’s the giddy flirtation of a summer Saturday night on ‘Haitiana’ and the thought that comes from looking around somewhere so different and asking ‘What Do You Wish For.’ But it also embraces darker political questions that don’t have easy answers. The opening track, ‘Agua,’ for instance, wonders why some people own the seeds that should be for everyone – who are those who have and who are the dispossessed? And ‘De Barrio,’ the warm, inviting waltz that closes the disc, examines the journey so many coming from Latin America to the US undertake. Listen and watch to the album teaser here.
