The Alfa Laval X20, model OFSX 520T-11CEGPX, is a high capacity purifier designed for dehydration of crude oil, espe-cially heavy crude oil with an API down to 11.5. Standard designSeparation takes place in the bowl, which is placed on a vertical spindle. An electric motor mounted vertically drives the spindle near the bottom via a flat belt. Circulating of lube oil ensures that the bearings are lubricated. An external pump maintains the necessary pressure. The centrifuge motor is designed for variable frequency drive.

All metallic parts that come into contact with the process liquid are made of high-grade stainless steel. Liquid-wetted gaskets are made of fluorocarbon rubber. To recover energy from the discharged nozzle flow, the nozzles are placed in the bowl periphery at a narrow angle from the tangent. The eighteen nozzles can be reached from the outside via a hatch in the frame hood, which enables technicians to replace them easily and rapidly without dismantling the frame. The nozzles are made of tungsten carbide, suitable for abrasive solids. The solids collecting ring is provided with a wear liner made of polyurethane. The inlet and outlets are fitted with flanged con-nections according to ASME B16.5. A rotating face seal seals off the bowl casing from the bearings. A cover interlocking kit makes it impossible to start the centrifuge unless it is properly assembled.

Special featuresThe X20 purifier can be fitted with an OPTIPHASER™ system, which automatically ensures a correct and stable position of the oil/water interface and therefore a consistent separa-tion performance without oil loss through the nozzles even at

sudden and/or frequent changes in flow rate and/or water cut from 0 – 100%. The system is designed so that water can be imported into the bowl backwards through the outlet for separated water, if necessary.

Basic equipmentCentrifuge with motor, set of tools, speed, vibration and oil pressure sensors, temperature sensors for the main spindle bearing, thermistors in the motor winding preventing overload, vibration dampening feet, foundation plate and standard set of spares.

OptionsAll X20 machines can be fitted with a nozzle monitor. This consists of a sensing device, which is hit by the jet from each individual nozzle. The signal is then transmitted to the control system, which displays the result. The control system shows whether the nozzles are clogged or worn out, therefore ena-bling safe operation and high availability.The machine can be supplied with a pressurised bowl casing, design pressure 400 kPag.A conversion kit for rebuilding of the X20 purifier into a version for de-oiling of water (X20 concentrator) is available. It is usually supplied as a functioning unit with a process liquid module, starter and controls. In cases where flammable liquids are processed, an inert gas system is provided with controls integrated in the machine control system.

Operating principlesThe feed is introduced to the rotating centrifuge bowl from the top via a stationary inlet pipe (1), and is accelerated in a distributor (2) before entering the disc stack (3). Separation takes place between the discs. The oil phase moves through the disc stack towards the centre of the bowl, and is pumped out under pressure by means of a built-in paring disc (4). The solids are collected at the bowl periphery and continu-ously discharged through the nozzles together with some water. The water droplets move towards the periphery to the oil/water interface where they coalesce to form a continu-ous water phase. The water that does not pass out through the nozzles is collected in pipes leading towards the centre through the bowl bottom into a chamber from where the water is pumped out under pressure by a paring disc. If the water flow is insufficient to satisfy the nozzle demand, water is imported into the bowl backwards through the paring disc by the OPTIPHASER™ system, ensuring no loss of oil through the nozzles. Filler pieces (5) prevent build-up of the solids between the nozzles and consequently no solid cones can build up that collapse over the nozzle, blocking and disturbing normal production.

Centrifugal dehydration of heavy crude oilThe Alfa Laval X20 centrifuge is a purpose-built, high-capacity process centrifuge. The design is an evolutionary develop-ment of the highly reliable Alfa Laval nozzle bowl disc stack centrifuge, which has been used for synthetic crude oil dehy-dration in Canada since 1978.

The X20 centrifuge is mounted on an offshore skid, com-plete with process and utility piping, instruments, valves and controls to form a functional process system. The system is suitable for use in hazardous areas on a Floating Production Storage and Offloading (FPSO) facility.

The X20 centrifuge can treat crude oils with an API down to 11.5. It can deal with considerable variations in feed compo-sition and constantly obtain a pipeline specification oil quality. The need for demulsifiers and heat is greatly reduced com-pared with conventional technology.

The OPTIPHASER™The X20 centrifuge is delivered equipped with the OPTIPHASER™, a patented feature that ensures optimal separation and minimal oil losses to the water phase.

The OPTIPHASER™ balances the feed with sufficient water to obtain optimal separation and makes it possible to accept up to 50% water cut in the feed, at flow rates from zero to full flow.

The OPTIPHASER™ also enables the operator to optimize process performance during operation.

СтандартнаяконструкцияЦентрифуга представляет собой корпус на основании, который содержит вал горизонтального привода, червячную передачу, ванну смазочного масла и полый шпиндель вер-тикального барабана. Барабан закреплен в верхней части шпинделя, внутри пространства, образуемого верхней час-тью корпуса, крышкой сбора твердых частиц и колпаком кор-пуса. На колпаке установлена система выпуска жидкости. Все детали, которые находятся в контакте с технологичес-кой жидкостью, изготовлены из нержавеющей стали. Барабан тарельчатого типа для извлечения твердых частиц, с автоматически действующей гидравлической системой для “взрывного воздействия”. Для привода с переменной частотой используется стандартный электродвигатель.

КонструктивныеособенностиPX 55 разработан на основе уникальной полугерметичес-кой концепции. Герметичный впуск, расположенный на дне, гарантирует бережное, неразрушающее ускорение исход-ного сырья до достижения полной скорости барабана. Площадь сечения потока для исходного сырья была увели-чена, чтобы минимизировать падение давления на входе. Выпускные отверстия для тяжелых и легких фракций открыты, что уменьшает перепад давления. Поэтому требования к поддержанию давления внутри механизма

достаточно низкие. Выпускные отверстия оборудова-ны неподвижными напорными дисками для удаления различных фракций. Напорный диск для легкой фракции фиксирован, в то время как напорные трубки для тяжелой фракции могут регулироваться. ПринципыработыМасло, которое должно подвергнуться сепарации, пода-ется (1) в барабан сепаратора снизу через полый шпин-дель (2) и попадает в пакет тарелок (3). Medium-capacity disc stack centrifuge for fats and oils refining

PX 65 & PX 65EX

The Alfa Laval range of centrifuges for the vegetable oil and animal fat refining industries is continuously modernized to take advantage of developments in materials, mechanical design and fluid dynamics. The PX 65/65EX is a medium-sized machine in this range of centrifuges.

ApplicationsContinuous degumming, neutralizing, dewaxing and washing of fatty oils, such as vegetable oils, lard, tallow and fish oil.

PerformanceThe table below shows nominal capacities. Actual through- puts vary according to the type of oil and fat to be treated.

Standard designThe machine consists of a frame with a base that contains a horizontal drive shaft, worm gear, lubricating oil bath and hollow vertical bowl spindle. The bowl is fixed on top of the spindle, inside the space formed by the upper part of the frame, the solids collecting cover and the frame hood. The hood carries the liquid discharge system. All parts in contact with the process liquid are made of stain-less steel. The bowl is of the solids ejecting disc type, with an automatic hydraulic operating system for intermittent solids discharge. The standard electric motor is suitable for variable frequency drive.

Design featuresThe PX 65/65EX is based on a unique, semi-hermetic design concept. The hermetic, bottom-fed inlet ensures a gentle, non-destructive acceleration of the feedstock up to full bowl speed. The flow area for the feedstock is designed to minimize inlet pressure drop. The outlets on the heavy and light phases are open, reducing the pressure drop across the separator. The feed-pressure requirement of the machine is therefore low. The outlets are equipped with stationary paring devices for removal of the different phases. The paring disc on the light phase is fixed, while the paring tubes on the heavy phase are adjustable.

Описание конструкцииЦентрифуга представляет собой раму на основании, кото-рая в свою очередь состоит из вала горизонтального при-вода, червячной передачи, картера червячной передачи и полого шпинделя вертикального барабана. Барабан уста-новлен на верхней части шпинделя, внутри пространства, образуемого верхней частью рамы, камерой сбора твердых частиц и колпаком рамы. На верхней части колпака уста-новлены выпускные устройства тяжелой и легкой фаз. Все детали, которые находятся в контакте с технологической жидкостью, изготовлены из нержавеющей стали. Барабан тарельчатого типа оснащен автоматической системой с гидравлическим приводом для периодической выгрузки твердого шлама. На раме установлен электродви-гатель, который управляется частотным преобразователем.

Конструктивные особенностиЗа основу при разработке РХ 100/100ЕХ была принята уникальная полугерметичная концепция. Герметичный нижний впуск жидкости обеспечивает бережное, неразру-шающее структуру ускорение исходного сырья до полной скорости вращения барабана. Площадь сечения впускного устройства рассчитана таким образом, чтобы минимизировать падение давле-ния на входе. Выпускные устройства тяжелой и легкой фаз открытого типа для минимизации потери давления в сепараторе. Поэтому требования к давлению подачи сырья достаточно низкие. Выпускные устройства обору-дованы неподвижными напорными дисками, служащими для откачки соответствующих фракций. The modular Alfa Laval Phoenix system enables owners or operators of virtually any type of drilling rig or offshore service vessel to boost the company’s environmental profile as well as achieve significant reductions in operating costs for water treatment and disposal.

New solution to old problems Offshore rigs and production platforms – as well as other installations and vessels used in the oil and gas industry – operate with complex mixtures of oil, water and solids, often in large volumes.

These drains have to be treated so the water rejected overboard complies with stringent environmental legislation, including Inter-national Maritime Organization (IMO) standards. A treatment onshore requires costly transport and storage tanks that take up precious space on the rigs.

Variations in waste streams These complex streams of contaminated water vary considerably in composition and physical properties. However, they almost always contain both hydrocarbon residues and solid particles – ranging from coarse to extremely fine. These mixtures are often in the form of complex emulsions that are difficult for traditional separation systems to tackle.

Each stage can be used to prepare these flows for subsequent treatment. They can also be combined as required to meet many different processing conditions, as well as space constraints and other practical con-siderations on board.

The Phoenix system tackles flows of con-taminated water where as much as 20% of the volume consists of solids, even if these particles are coarse and abrasive.

Space availability The three modules of the Phoenix system can be mounted together on one single skid or on separate skids to be installed in different rooms. The equipment can be placed in hazardous as well as in safe areas.

Sources for waste water Offshore oil and gas installations normally require contaminated water treatment sys-tems in conjunction with four main streams:

• Bilge water: it is the contaminated watercollected in engine rooms and machineryspaces. This can contain some smallamount of fuel oil or lube oil, some dust,some rust. This stream is relatively easyto separate.

• Open deck drain: the origin of this drainis coming from the melted snow or fromthe rain water collected on the helideckor on the main deck. This can also be thewater used to wash the deck. It is easy tofigure out the oil content and solids con-centration would be small in this drain.So it is also relatively easy to separate.

• Tank wash drain: the tanks collecting thedifferent drilling muds need sometimes tobe cleaned completely. The washingwater needs to be treated then. This

drain is much more difficult to separate than the first two ones because it usually contains a lot of solids and strong emulsions.

• Drill floor drain: oil spillage containingvarious types of solids in differentconcentrations, strong emulsions whichmake the separation very difficult.

Combined forces - maximum effect Alfa Laval has several decades of experience with operating different kinds of treatment systems for contaminated water, often under the most demanding offshore conditions in the world – including the North Sea. The Alfa Laval range of centrifuges for the vegetable oil and animal fat refining industries is continuously modernized to take advantage of developments in materials, mechanical design and fluid dynamics. The PX 115/115EX is a large-sized machine in this range of centrifuges.

ApplicationsContinuous degumming, neutralizing, dewaxing, and washing of fatty oils, such as various vegetable oils, lard, tallow, and fish oil.

PerformanceThe table below shows nominal capacities. Actual throughputs vary according to the type of oil and fat to be treated.

Standard designThe machine consists of a frame with a base that contains a horizontal drive shaft, worm gear, lubricating oil bath and the hollow vertical bowl spindle. The bowl is fixed on top of the spindle inside the space formed by the upper part of the frame, the solids collecting cover and the frame hood. The hood carries the liquid discharge system. All parts in contact with the process liquid are made of stainless steel. The bowl is of the solids-ejecting type with an automatic hydraulic operating system for intermittent solids discharge. The standard electric motor is suitable for variable frequency drive.

Design featuresThe PX 115/115EX is based on a unique, semi-hermetic design concept. The hermetic, bottom-fed inlet ensures a gentle, non-destructive acceleration of the feedstock up to full bowl speed. The flow area for the feedstock is designed to minimize inlet pressure drop. The outlets on the heavy and light phases are open, reducing the pressure drop across the separator. The feed pressure requirement of the machine is therefore low. The outlets are equipped with stationary paring devices for removal of the different phases. The paring disc on the light phases is fixed, while the paring tubes on the heavy phase are adjustable.

PX 115 complete with motor

By adjusting a positioner on the heavy-phase outlet, the oper-ator can reduce or extend the paring diameter of the paring tubes. This patented innovation makes it possible to adjust the flow rate of the heavy phase during operation, facilitating optimal separation. With the working environment in mind, the PX 115/115EX is designed to operate at low noise levels. This is achieved through a rubber-damped bearing assembly, jacketed frame and an outer bowl design, which is engineered for low wind noise.

Operating principlesThe oil to be separated is fed (1) into the separator bowl from the bottom through a hollow spindle (2) and enters the disc stack (3). The heavy phase and heavy sludge are forced towards the periphery of the bowl, while the light phase flows towards the centre of the bowl, from where it is pumped out (4) for further processing. The heavy phase is led over a top disc (5) into a chamber where an adjustable paring device pumps it out of the separator (6). Sludge collects in the sludge space (7) and is discharged intermittently and automatically. The discharge is achieved by a hydraulic system which at preset suitable intervals forces the sliding bowl bottom (8) to drop down, thus opening the sludge ports at the bowl periphery. The sludge is collected in the frame and leaves the centrifuge via a cyclone.

For produced water de-oiling

X20

The Alfa Laval X20, model OFSX 520S-71CEGPX, is a high capacity concentrator designed for de-oiling of produced water. The design is based on the robust nozzle-type disc bowl centrifuge in order to withstand the demanding condi-tions in the oil-producing industry. The machine is in compli-ance with the EC ATEX directive category 2, and therefore Zones 1 and 2. As an option, the machine can be operated under a positive pressure of 400 kPa, as it has an ASME-approved pressure casing. The X20 concentrator is one machine in the X20 family, which also consists of machines for applications such as heavy crude and tar sand dehydration.

ApplicationsThe X20 concentrator is designed to reduce the oil content to 15 ppm or lower in produced water. Using a centrifuge for this application is especially suitable for:

- heavy crude oil facilities - gas production facilities with associated condensate - deepwater offshore facilities including floating platforms

The compact design makes it especially useful for offshore processing, including at floating platforms where the sea heave may cause problems for conventional technology

Standard designSeparation takes place in the bowl, which is placed on a vertical spindle. An electric motor mounted vertically drives the spindle near the bottom via a flat belt. Circulating oil ensures that the bearings are lubricated. An external lube oil pump maintains the necessary pressure. The centrifuge motor is designed for variable frequency drive.

All metallic parts that come into contact with the process liquid are made of high-grade stainless steel. Liquid-wetted gaskets are made of fluorocarbon rubber.

To recover energy from the discharged nozzle flow, the noz-zles are placed in the bowl periphery at a narrow angle from the tangent. The eighteen nozzles can be reached from the outside via a hatch in the frame hood, which allows techni-cians to replace them easily and rapidly without dismantling the frame. The nozzles are made of tungsten carbide, suitable for abrasive solids. The solids collecting ring is fitted with a wear liner made from polyurethane.

The inlet and outlets are fitted with ANSI flanges. A rotating face seal seals off the bowl casing from the bearings. A cover interlocking kit makes it impossible to start the centrifuge unless it is properly assembled.

Special featuresThe atmospheric version of the X20 concentrator is fitted with a power recovery device on the water outlet. The pressurised version OFSX 520T-71CEGPX has a paring disc, which elimi-nates the need for an external water pump.

Basic equipmentCentrifuge with motor, set of tools, speed and vibration sen-sors, oil pressure switch, temperature sensors for the main spindle bearing and the motor winding, vibration dampening feet, foundation plate and standard set of spares.

OptionsThe X20 concentrator can be fitted with a nozzle monitor. This consists of a sensing device, which is hit by the jet from each individual nozzle. The signal is then transmitted to a box, which displays the result. The monitor shows whether the nozzles are clogged or worn out, therefore enabling safe operation and high availability. The machine can be supplied with a pressurised bowl casing, design pressure 400 kPag. The separated water leaves the centrifuge under pressure. It is usually supplied as a functioning unit with a process liquid module, starter and controls. In cases where flammable liquids are processed, an inert gas system is provided with controls integrated in the machine controls.

Operating principlesThe feed containing the liquids and the solids is introduced to the rotating centrifuge bowl from the top via a stationary inlet pipe (1), and is accelerated in a distributor (2) before entering the disc stack (3). Separation takes place between the discs. The water phase moves towards the periphery, the surplus water is collected in pipes leading towards the centre into a chamber, through the bowl bottom over a gravity ring into the collecting cover, from which it flows out under gravity. This is valid for the atmospheric version. In the pressurised version, the water leaves the centrifuge under pressure by means of a built-in paring disc. The oil droplets move through the disc stack to the oil/water interface, where they coalesce to form a continuous oil phase that overflows into a chamber and which is pumped out under pressure by means of a built-in paring disc (4). Filler pieces (5) prevent build-up of the solids between the nozzles.
