West Austra l ians a l l let us rejoice for we are young, free and fashionable. This summer, X-Press Fashion celebrates the sunburnt terrain of WA with Outback Overture, a tribute to the Australian landscape and those who call it home. Shot on location at the picturesque Wambyn Olive Farm just outside of York, Outback Overture brings fashions from Picnic At Hanging Rock kicking and screaming into the 21st century. Despite what its name may suggest, Wambyn doesn’t just churn out tasty olives, the farm is also home to a beautiful and haunting Ruined Piano Sanctuary. Over the years individuals and organisations have carted out derelict pianos to Wambyn, where they’re placed in fields to bore the brunt of mother nature, rotting slowly amongst the boulders and Eucalypts. Many thanks to Kim and Penny at Wambyn for allowing us free reign of their incredible property to shoot Outback Overture. And so we begin our summer edition, complete with features on far off cities, summer music festivals, new fitness regimes and fashion courses across the state. From all of us here at X-Press Fashion, Merry Christmas, Happy New Year, and good luck in the Boxing Day sales!

Curtin University
Budding designers interested in employing the latest (and greatest) cutting edge production techniques should look no further than Curtin University’s undergraduate Bachelor of Arts (Humanities) course, majoring in Fashion. Home to state-of-the-art equipment and teaching staff constantly looking for new ways to create and manipulate fabrics, Curtin allows students to develop their own approach to fashion, encouraging them to innovate and push the boundaries. A full time, three year course that takes place at Curtin’s Bentley campus, the Fashion program is highly regarded in the WA industry for producing graduates that are inventive and market ready. Love fabric? Perhaps a Bachelor of Arts (Humanities) majoring in Textiles will be more up your alley. In this three year course students discover the history of textiles and look to the future with new kinds of fabric design and manipulation. Learn how to embroider, embellish, dye, tuft and fuse, and utilise computerised fabric production methods to create your very own prints and textiles. To find out more about Fashion studies at Curtin, jump online to curtin.edu.au.
Central Institute
Whether you’re keen on print design or textile manipulation, there’s no going past Central Institute’s Diploma of Fashion and Textile Design course. Instead of just learning how to construct and design garments, students at Central Institute are offered the opportunity to create their own fabrics and learn how to design prints using traditional and cutting edge techniques. A range of practical core units are offered as part of Central’s Fashion And Textile Design course including fashion drawing, digital design techniques, fashion textiles and fashion marketing; ensuring that graduates leave the course equipped with all the skills needed to design, create and launch a successful label. With previous graduates including the likes of Jaime Lee Major (Jaime Lee), Kirsten Skye (Paper Skye) and Chloe Jones (Lonely As A Cloud), students at Central Institute know they’re in safe and very capable hands. To find out more about Central Institute’s courses, head to central.wa.edu.au.
Challenger Institute
Offering a slightly shorter course than other educational institutions in WA, Challenger Institute’s Diploma in Fashion Design and Textiles is renowned for producing some of our state’s most promising and accomplished fashion designers. Offering small classes that ensure every student receives one-on-one assistance, Challenger’s course of study focuses on both design and construction, equipping students with a wide variety of skills. With close connections to organisations such as The Fremantle Fashion Collective, students at Challenger are encouraged to undertake extensive industry placements, working closely with established designers who know the ins and outs of life in the fashion fast lane. Get the low down on Challenger’s hands-on course, check out challenger.wa.edu.au.
Polytechnic West
If you’re not sure whether you want to focus on textiles, garment construction or design, cover all your bases with Polytechnic West’s course in Applied Fashion Design and Technology. A three year diploma, Polytechnic West’s qualification ensures students understand the ins and outs of all facets of the fashion industry, from patternmaking to how to run and maintain a successful label. Students are offered extensive work experience opportunities with designers located in WA and over east, and a mentoring program allows industry heavyweights to guide students and provide advice and feedback on their collections. Units on offer include Commercial Viability, Cost Design Production and Experimental Textiles. Get the full rundown on the course at polytechnic.wa.edu.au.
Edith Cowan University
Fusing the realms of art and fashion, ECU’s Contemporary Fashion (Bachelor Of Contemporary Arts) course encourages students to look beyond form and functionality to develop new ways of creating, deconstructing and understanding garments. A three year course offered at the Mount Lawley ECU campus, the Contemporary Fashion steam of study is perfect for budding artists and designers who perhaps aren’t necessarily looking to create ready-to-wear garments. Students develop highly tuned analytical skills as well at the practical knowledge required to execute avant garde and fashion forward creations. Units on offer include Materials And The Body, Fabric Manipulation and Contextualising The Garment, among many others. Find out more about Contemporary Fashion at ECU via ecu.edu.au.

FESTIVALCHICFESTIVALFREAK
OR
THE CHOICE IS YOURS
Music festival fashion tends to fall into three categories: practical, impractical and batshit insane. Unless you’d like to be labelled as the latter, it’s recommended that you avoid some of the more embarrassing trends, such as full body catsuits in neon colours, animal costumes and oversized hats; it’s sartorial suicide people.
The old saying goes that you shouldn’t judge a book by its cover, but anyone wearing furry leg warmers out in public deserves to be judged; and harshly so. If you don’t want to look like a time travelling raver during this year’s festival season, think long and hard about what you’re going to wear, rather than drinking hard then reaching into the wardrobe for something wacky. First tip: practicality is key. Ladies, there is no need for you to wear heels to a music festival, unless of course you’re Beyonce. Your feet will thank you for wearing flats, so too will other festival punters, who don’t tend to react well when some sheila in stilettos steps on their toes. Betts has a great range of comfortable and stylish sandals that are perfect for long days in the sun. Check out the full range at Betts.com.au. Guys, first up, nobody wants to see you shirtless. The only location where ‘shirt off’ is an acceptable dress code is the beach, so unless you’re hanging at Scarbs, do us all a favour and leave your shirt on. This rule is particularly favourable when moshing up the front – if you’re shirtless, chances are at least 10 people will be drenched with your sweat by the time your favourite band’s set has come to a close. Didn’t anyone ever teach you to slip on a shirt, slop on some sunscreen and slap on a hat before playing with others? The primary school rule of ‘no hat no play’ should be adapted to ‘no shirt no play’ for adults in a music festival context.
There really is no valid reason for guys to get around without their shirt on this summer when you consider all the fantastic menswear labels dishing out cool tees. Australian labels such as Kosi Kosi, Faux Pas, Nana Judy and Stand International are on the money with their distressed tees and singlets, emblazoned with cool prints and executed with soft fabrics. Stores such as Cite, Pigeonhole, Method, Billie & Rose and Planet stock huge amounts of awesome menswear, so finding the right top for you certainly won’t be an arduous process. Instead of getting around in their bikinis at festivals (much to the delight of the shirtless male population), girls should leave a little more to the imagination with a mini dress or denim cut offs and a simple tee. Practically every clothing store in Perth is packed to the brim with cool mini dresses at present, which means there’s a huge range of designs to choose from. Keep your eyes peeled for on-trend digital prints and pastel colours reminiscent of your favourite flavour of gelato. Once you’ve got your outfits down, you’ll need to sort out some accessories, starting first with some sunglasses that will protect your peepers on scorching hot summer days. If your budget is tight, look to labels like Perv Eyewear or Le Specs for affordable yet stylish glasses, making sure the frame flatters your face. Avoid Ray-Ban Wayfarer copies, every Tom, Dick and Harriette has a pair of Ray-Bans these days, so if you don’t want to blend into the crowd, steer clear of this iconic style. No matter who you are or what festival you’re going to, do yourself a favour and leave the furry rainbow legwarmers to rot in the bottom of the cupboard this summer – nobody wants to see a have shaved yeti pulling shapes during their favourite band’s set.

If I were to summarise my time in New York City in a manner that expressed the justice it deserves then there’s no doubt I’d require far more than my allocated 4000 characters. Alas, formats must be followed and guidelines adhered to thus I find myself in the throes of a bitter culling predicament. I could easily wax lyrical for characters upon characters about the city’s impressive façade, vivacious and animated locals, smorgasbord of smells and tragically trendy bars and restaurants but that’s nothing you aren’t already aware of courtesy of the way in which the city has been immortalised by countless platforms of media. Each man reads his own meaning into NYC and mine was one that strayed slightly away from the Sex And The City touring, Times Square shooting, Wall Street strolling affair so commonly experienced by Joe Tourist, and whilst there’s absolutely nothing wrong with that particular brand of escapade - hell I can appreciate a practical bum bag (almost) as much as the next khaki-clad tourist - I found that the magic of NYC was encountered the minute we closed the cover of one dog-eared Lonely Planet guide and opened our eyes, ears and wallet to all the city had to offer.
NEW YORKSTATE OF MIND By Jessica Donovan Photos By Dwight O’Neil
In a city bursting with creative and professional minds, ventures and avenues, it’s no wonder things just ‘happen’ in NYC. For example, whilst dining in the East Village at restaurant du jour Momofuku - a growing empire of hip eateries with a DIY aesthetic - you may find yourself swilling Sake with Texan billionaires, just like us.
Don’t be jittery and be sure to disguise that cheesy grin, there’s a chance it will be looked down upon later in the evening when you’re rubbing elbows with Alexander Wang and the fashion set at an exclusive denim launch at prominent downtown spot, the Tribeca Grand Hotel. You must
“I found that the magic of NYC was

Planet guide and opened our eyes, ears and wallet to all the city had to offer.”
certainly not let it resurface when you successfully infiltrate a private rooftop pool party thrown by Victoria’s Secret Angel Alessandra Ambrosio, where again you’ll find yourself hobnobbing with the societal upper crust and page six regulars; the cast of Gossip Girl and Marc Jacobs included. Instead, drink your weight in strawberry and basil caipirinhas and Moet and try to purge any evil thoughts regarding the young girl sitting beside you nonchalantly toting her $37,000 Hermes Birkin. Also, try not to talk too loudly about the fact that you can see into your apartment window and that the 18-200mm lens you were using to focus in on the perfect point of entry is sitting on the table. If you absolutely must wear said grin then do so when it’s safest - whilst shopping. NYC accommodates a diverse and inspiring melting pot of sartorial inclinations ranging from Upper East Side prep, Downtown cool, West Village glam, Williamsburg vintage and everything in between. I unearthed some delightful finds at otherworldly Williamsburg Vintage Market, which boasts an astounding selection of highly sought after items. Opening Ceremony in Soho
is particularly noteworthy as a premier purveyor of downtown style and if you’re lucky you may just bump into/gaze lovingly at Chloe Sevigny. If you do blow your budget (guilty) the aptly named Prosperity Dumpling and your stupidly delicious $2 dumpling dinner are only a few blocks away in Chinatown. Vi r tua l ly sca l ing a building to enjoy a stiff drink in an unnamed, well-hidden Speakeasy in the Lower East Side certainly had its thrills as we relished in the rich history of the days of alcohol prohibition and revolving bookcases, but that’s not to say daintily sipping martinis whilst rooftop-and-bar hopping in the Meatpacking District was any less enjoyable in all it’s ostentatious glory. For at the end of the day you could either opt to sink a few at a dive bar or sip bellinis at Pastis in the West Village and still revel in the sheer magic of the city, as in the immortal words of Walt Whitman, “There is no place like it, no place with an atom of its glory, pride, and exultancy. It lays its hand upon a man’s bowels; he grows drunk with ecstasy; he grows young and full of glory, he feels that he can never die.” Brilliantly put, Walt.

It’s not easy realising you’re not 17 anymore. Going out to gigs lately, I often marvel at all the new faces in the scene, wondering why I haven’t met these people before, even though I’m at the same places every weekend. Then it hits me, ‘right, they were in high school last month, which is why I’ve never seen them around before’. I feel like I can’t compete with these babe-a-licious 17 year olds, these blondie twigs with not an ounce of fat on them, rocking skin-tight designer bodysuits, and pin-like limbs in tight jeans. I feel pangs of jealousy. I used to have a body like that (well, sort of)! But apparently, after seven, post-high school years of laziness, chocolate eating and beer drinking, my body has decided to give up on me. The exercise routine that I’ve had for the past few years, consisting of a light jog a couple of times a week, was obviously not cutting it. I would have to ramp things up if I wanted to even have a shot at getting back some of my 17 year old former body glory. But truth be told, I ain’t much of a ‘team sports’ girl – as far as I’m concerned, sticking the word ‘social’ before the word ‘soccer’ or ‘netball’ doesn’t make it a fun pastime – at the end of the day, even if it’s with your friends, you are still playing sport. But I have this friend who recently tried Bikram Yoga and has bigged it up so much that I couldn’t help but become intrigued – the main obstacle being, it sounded really effing hard! It is basically 90 minutes of hardcore stretching and bending, a challenging test of your own personal gymnastic ability. Oh yeah – and one other thing – you do it all in a room that’s heated to 40 degrees. Apparently the heat, which is similar to your own internal body temperature, makes it easier for you to do all the bendy postures – it loosens up your joints so you can work yourself harder! And the sweating (and oh boy, is there a lot of sweating) helps you eliminate toxins. So on Saturday I headed to the Bikram Yoga Centre in North Perth with my pal. The first thing you notice when you get in the building is the bodies of the women in the foyer. Hot, hot, bodies. Skinny, toned, tanned. There was even a mega hot grandma – grey hair, loads of wrinkles, but the best legs I’d ever seen. You’re pretty much surrounded by encouraging human results that makes the thought of the pain you’re about to endure heaps easier to bear. But then the gong sounds (yep, there’s a gong!) and you enter the Yoga Room to lay down your mat - and the heat hits you in a wave. I can liken it to that feeling of being in a nice air-conditioned room while it’s sweltering at 40 degrees outside, then walking outside for the first time all day, and gulping in a mouthful of hot, dry air as the intense heat attaches itself to your skin. Your heart beats faster and your chest constricts. It’s full on. Suddenly, I was petrified! How the hell was I even going to sit in this room for 90 minutes straight, let alone exercise in here, let alone exercise vigorously in here? Over the course of the next 90 minutes I stretched and contorted my body like it’s never been manipulated before. I did it fast, and I did it lots. And it was really friggin’ sweaty work – I don’t usually perspire that much during general exercise, or on hot days even – but I swear about a bathtub’s worth of water poured out of my body. Then there was the redness – oh, man. ‘Red like a lobster’ would be an understatement. Even after I got home, had a cold shower, and sat down doing nothing for an hour, my face was still red. Yet, apart from the heat, and the sweat, and the total exhaustion – you actually feel good. As I was doing those 26 postures, I could feel my tuck shop lady arms burning inside, I could feel my stomach clenching, my thigh muscles literally shook they were working so hard. I thought to myself, ‘this is good, this is my body telling me – I’m shaping up, baby’. After my first session I drank a shitload of water. Litres’ worth. And everything in my body hurt, I was so sore. Sore and thirsty! But, as
THEY ONLY WANT YOU

the Centre encourages for maximum results, I went back within 24 hours for another hit of Bikram. Three sessions down the track, and a few things have happened. My skin is super clear, and glowing, from all the sweating out the bad stuff and the copious water drinking. My tuck shop lady arms are starting to take on some tone. My legs have nice shadows to them and whilst riding my bike is a nightmare, my butt hurts enough to make me think ‘Bikram must be murdering my cellulite.’ I’ll give myself a few more sessions before I hit the mirror again to survey the proper results. But I have a feeling that, whilst regaining my 17-year old-body might be an impossible task, Bikram might just be the thing to make the impossible, possible. And when my confidence in that thought falters? Well, I just think of mega-hot grandma. You can find out more about Bikram in Perth at perthbikramyoga.com.au.

Well it’s already that time again, Christmas shopping season is upon us. Buying for the modern
geek can be a bit daunting; do you go for Bonestorm or Lee Carvallo’s Putting Challenge? If you
have a person in your life who appreciates that new gadget smell, or anything that makes a nice
soft whirring noise, then maybe this list can help tick another name off Santa’s list.
IPADFrom $629 - apple.com.au/ipadSix months later, my iPad is still the best digital device I own, hands down. Right now there isn’t any competition in the tablet market but hopefully by this time next year we’ll have an Android tablet to put on the list. You'll fi nd them everywhere, but it could be hard to fi nd one on sale.
PARROT AR DRONE$1000 - ardrone.parrot.com/parrot-ar-droneSeriously, it’s a freaking hovering drone, controlled by your iPhone, iPad or iPod Touch. No geek could hate this; it’s an expensive but instant win. If you are lucky enough to have another rich friend, then you can play against each other in an Augmented Reality shooting game, Drone vs Drone. Yeah.
BLU-RAY$20-40 - jbhifi .com.auIf your geek is rocking a PlayStation 3 or any Blu-ray player, think about getting them a new fl ick as a stocking stuffer. They look and sound great and usually have some great special features. But as when DVD fi rst came out, the price of new releases is a tad on the high side. So, like getting an audio CD as a present 20 years ago, a BRD has a real sense of value to it. Scott Pilgrim vs The World or District 9 will probably hit a geek’s spot, but their favourite space-drama TV show box-set would really win them over. JB Hi-fi is gonna give you the best deal, but be wary online as Blu-ray discs usually have region locking active.
VOLTRON USB$44 - incubot.com/voltron.htmlFully licensed and with a full episode on the stick. Unfortunately each tiger is not an individual stick, however it’s still got some childhood credit.
PLAYSTATION MOVE OR XBOX KINECT$68-$198 -.ebgames.com.auDo they already have a PS3 or Xbox 360? Give their system a 2010 tune-up with a motion controller. The recently released Playstation Move or Xbox Kinect bring their respective systems up against the dominance in motion gaming, the Nintendo Wii. Real gamers will appreciate the precision of the Move, while Kinect is yet to prove itself but it is defi nitely looking towards the future of computer interaction.
A VERY GEEKY CHRISTMAS
