Marine Park & EnvironmentDiscover the wetlands and mangroves at either end of the foreshore. The purpose-built Mangrove Boardwalk at the Wynnum North end is the ideal way to explore this important ecosystem.

The wetlands and foreshore are internationally recog-nised and are home to over 200 species of migratory and wading birds. The Bay itself is home to the biggest herd of Dugong living close to a city.

HistoryCaptain James Cook named Moreton Bay on May 16, 1770 during his voyage of discovery. However, the first European settlement did not take place in the area until 1824 as a convict colony. In 1867, a high-security colonial penal settlement was established on St Helena Island and soon become known as the ‘Hell hole of the Pacific’. Explore St Helena on a day or night tour.

Wynnum is the Aboriginal name for breadfruit tree. The first land auctions took place in 1860. Further estates were later developed and named after Sydney localities such as Rose Bay, Darling Point and Manly.
