    STUDENT SupportTHE TUTOR TEAMEvery student is allocated an individual progress tutor who supports and guides them through their study programme over the course of their time with us. Students are placed in a tutor group according to their year of study, and a programme of study skills, health advice, university and next steps guidance is delivered.

    The progress tutors work very closely with curriculum staff to ensure the very best level of support for our students, enabling them to be successful in all their subject choices.

    PATHWAY TO YOUR PROGRESSION

    PATHWAY TO YOUR ProgressionCAREERS GUIDANCE During the academic year, Wyke Sixth Form College host multiple career events; from the next steps exhibition, university speakers to sector specif ic talks with organisations and employers where they will talk directly to the students about their own career progression, about their organisation and what it is l ike working there. Careers advisors book one-to-one student appointments, drop in sessions on specif ic career elements such as f inding the right pathway for students, CV and cover letter writing, application support, interview preparation and building their portfolio.

    SUPPORT WITH UNIVERSITY APPLICATION To help students with the university application process we have a dedicated UCAS and Careers Coordinator. This support includes guidance in choosing the right course of study, the right institution and what experiences they will want to gain from university. The university process really begins in the f irst year when we introduce the next step pathways. Built into this is Wyke’s very own Next Steps exhibition, alongside specialised course talks from a range of university providers. We ensure that all students are given the information they require to make the right, informed decision for them and their higher education journey.

    PRE-MEDICAL PROGRAMMEAt Wyke we recognise that applications for Medicine, Dentistry and Veterinary Science are particularly competitive. In addition to the normal careers and UCAS advice in college, we therefore offer an established programme to support students considering applying for these subjects.

    Staff in the Science Department work closely with colleagues in Careers and UCAS to ensure students are well advised about their applications and receive the guidance needed to make a competitive application. Whether this is some extra individual subject support to secure top grades, help locating work experience, information on how to apply to university or preparation for interview, Wyke Sixth Form College will be there at each stage of your Medical career journey.

    APPRENTICESHIPS AND OTHER PROGRESSIONWe recognise that university is not the right option for all of our students and we have a dedicated member of staff who works closely with training providers who come into the college throughout the year to talk about apprenticeships. This includes degree apprenticeships that are becoming more and more popular. Employers also come in regularly to give talks about their organisation and what they are looking for in future employees.

    WORK EXPERIENCEHere at Wyke, we believe in offering work experience placements to students. This helps them overcome barriers to entering work, either through enhancing their CV, or more importantly, gaining confidence and really believing that they are adding a contribution to an organisation.

    We have a Work Experience and Careers Coordinator that is here to give advice and guidance in getting the right placement for our students. They will help identify which area the student would like to work in and give ideas and suggestions on how to f ind work experience.

    EMPLOYER ENGAGEMENTWe work with over 250 employers across the region and understand the importance of making our students aware that there are some great companies to work for. We offer advice on the different job roles and opportunities available to them. Some of our key partners include BAE Systems, NHS, Arco and EY.

    We are continually building solid and long lasting relationships with employers and work with them on a regular basis. They provide activities such as work experience, come into the college to give industry talks and talk about their own career path. Our students are also given the chance to visit employers to observe and understand the workplace.

    Chloe Gravill

    The eyes of millions of breakfast television viewers were on former Hornsea School student Max Joy as he opened his results live on Good Morning Britain, revealing the 1 A* and 2 A grades that secured his place to study Medicine at Hull York Medical School.

    “I chose to study at Hull York Medical School after attending open events where I fell in love with it. The staff and the experiences that I had there were amazing and I really hope it will be amazing to study there. As a student at Wyke Sixth Form College I was part of the Pre-Medical Programme which was excellent in preparing for me for the whole process of applying to Medicine which included help with the entrance examinations, advice on my UCAS application and mock interviews.”

    Alongside his studies, Max participated in the college production of Grease, playing the lead role of Danny Zuko. “The college production was such a good thing to do, it was a nice break from academic studies and you meet loads of people from all different departments in the college.”

    When asked to summarise his experience at Wyke, Max said, “Wyke is a fantastic college and I have absolutely loved every single moment. My subjects, the experiences and the teachers are amazing.”

    A growing number of students are viewing Wyke Sixth Form College as a pathway onto an advanced apprenticeship.

    Chloe Gravill, a former Baysgarth School student has just begun training as a Marketing Executive.

    When asked why she chose to do an apprenticeship Chloe said, “I went down the apprenticeship route because I wanted to start my career earlier. Wyke were really supportive of my decision and I received great guidance and support from my teachers and the colleges careers advisors.”

    “As I continue my apprenticeship I will complete qualif ications and gain valuable experience within a marketing company. In the short time I have worked at The Marketplace I have attended a number of networking events, allowing me to meet companies across different areas of the marketing industry.”

    Chloe gave the following advice to students considering studying A Levels at Wyke. “Enjoy every minute, take the opportunity to make new friends and try your best in all of your subjects as your hard work will pay off.”

    ENGLISH LANGUAGEWHO IS THIS COURSE FOR?

    COURSE CONTENT

    This very popular course is ideal for those students who enjoyed GCSE English Language and want to f ind out more about how language works. It appeals to students who are both analytical and creative in their own thinking and writing. Although A Level English Language builds upon those skills already acquired, this subject is quite different from GCSE and is more of an introductory course to the University academic discipline called ‘l inguistics’ (the science of language).

    The course will build upon GCSE success, but it will not be assumed that students are experts.

    English Language links well with many other A Level courses, for example, Psychology, Sociology, History, Media Studies and Law. Students will also develop invaluable communication and analytical skills which will be suitable for any undergraduate course and students’ future employability prospects.

    Analysis of written and spoken texts, including multi-modal texts

    Language issues

    Creative Writing

    Investigating Language

    Students will be learning how to study language systematically using different keys of language: lexis, semantics, grammar, phonology, morphology, pragmatics and spoken language. These keys of language will be used to unlock the door to meaning. A variety of texts will be studied including the following:

    - Spoken language transcripts from spontaneous, semi-scripted and scripted speech in a range of media, social, formal and domestic settings/contexts;

    - Written texts covering a period of 500 years (1500-present day) with a particular focus on how language has changed.

    There will be an opportunity to engage with a variety of language issues which may include the following:

    - Language and Diversity (regional accents and dialects, etc);

    - Language and Power;

    - Language and Gender.

    There will be an opportunity to develop creative writing skills in both literary and non-literary contexts. Students will develop confidence and skill in writing for different audiences, purposes and contexts. Students will also have to make conscious linguistic decisions and these will be accounted for within an analytical commentary.

    The one coursework component for A Level English Language will require you to collect spoken or written data which will be systematically analysed and interrogated in respect of what we can learn about language and society. The language investigation will fall under one of the falling areas:

    1. Language and self-representation;

    2. Language and gender;

    3. Language and culture;

    4. Language and diversity.

    The research based skills (primary and secondary) are excellent in preparing students for any undergraduate course.

    The following linguistic skills and knowledge will be covered for the A Level units:

  • ENGLISH LITERATUREWHO IS THIS COURSE FOR? COURSE CONTENTThis course is for students who thoroughly enjoy reading and want to broaden their knowledge of English Literature (prose, poetry and drama) from a range of different historical periods. There is a high level of demand in terms of both the level and the amount of reading involved: students will be expected to read on their own outside lesson time.

    Students thinking of taking English Literature should be open-minded and keen to explore a range of writing and authors, as well as a range of literary approaches and concepts, and should be ready to be challenged by what they read. The focus of the course is on learning to recognise, interrogate and analyse the many and varied ways in which authors create meaning.

    Students are encouraged to develop a holistic understanding of texts in all their complexity. A willingness to take part in lively discussion and debate is also an asset on the course.

    We follow the OCR English Literature syllabus.

    Lessons involve a great deal of discussion and collaborative activity, though reading alone outside lesson time forms a key part of the course. Discussion and debate are key to the way that English Literature is taught; the ideas of all students are important and student input very much shapes the ways in which the texts are read and presented.

    Students will also be expected to learn a vocabulary of literary terminology that they can employ when writing about and analysing texts.

    EXTENDED PROJECT QUALIFICATION (EPQ)WHO IS THIS COURSE FOR?

    WHAT IS EPQ?

    WHAT DOES IT LEAD TO?

    COURSE DETAILS

    The EPQ is available as one of the elective courses as part of the Level 3 study programme. It is suitable for students who are able to work independently, manage their time effectively and manage their workload to set deadlines.

    The EPQ is an extra qualif ication which is equivalent to half an A Level and is worth additional UCAS points. Completing an EPQ involves choosing your own topic to investigate. The course is intended to take students beyond their A Level studies, consequently, topics chosen for investigation should not be ones which are already being studied as part of conventional A Level courses. The EPQ is highly valued by universities as it is regarded as excellent preparation for study at Higher Education level.

    An EPQ enhances the study skills of students and provides them with the experience of independent learning which is characteristic of university study. Therefore, gaining the EPQ is not only useful for the personal development of students but is highly valued by universities as evidence of student’s ability to engage in research, carry out independent learning and explore an issue in depth. This gives students a highly competitive edge when applying to university.

    If you have the opportunity, then undertaking an EPQ is a good idea. It develops your ability to study independently and helps make the transition from school to university. If you’re applying for a subject at that you haven’t studied at college, an EPQ is a good way to demonstrate your interest and commitment.“

    Queens College, Cambridge

    The three basic principles of the EPQ are:

    1. The focus of a project is chosen by the student;2. It is the responsibility of the student to undertake the

    research needed to complete the project;3. The student should complete a production log recording

    the process by which the project was realised.

    The course is essentially defined by the student with the guidance of a member of teaching staff.

    Taught elements of the course include:

    - Planning;- Research Skills;- Quality of Evidence;- Plagiarism;- Referencing; - Presentation Skills.

    The project culminates in the completion of the report (together with any artefacts) in which the research f indings are analysed, evaluated and fully referenced. The f inal part of the production log is a presentation of the student’s EPQ Journey.
