Daily Devotional Day 1 Matthew 1:1-2:12 Commence Countdown! When President Kennedy issued his famous challenge to land on the moon, NASA had no idea how to do it. This sudden burst of technology required 400,000 Americans, 20,000 businesses and universities and $24 billion. That “one small step for a man” required thousands of steps and incredible sacrifices. Matthew gives us a reverse launch. Instead of a human rocketing to heaven, God came down and set foot as a human on earth. It was a plan set in motion at creation. Chapter 1 counts down 42 generations to the Messiah. It tells about the incredible sacrifice of a poor carpenter and his fiancé who faced ridicule and death to welcome the Christ. It reminds us of stargazers who traveled a thousand miles, gave priceless treasures and bowed down to worship Jesus. Above all, it announces the arrival of the Creator of the Universe who came to “save his people from their sins” and make possible the “one giant leap” to eternity for all who believe. This is your invitation to join that launch team. It will require effort and sacrifice. Go all the way. Pray, worship, study and serve over the next 50 days. Let Jesus ignite a fire in your soul and launch you on the adventure of lifetime. Prayer: Lord, use me to launch your Good News of salvation, hope and healing in my world. Help me to offer my whole self to Your service. Action step: Invite someone to attend worship with you next week. Day 2 Matthew 1:18-25 “But as he considered this, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream and said, “Joseph, son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary home as your wife because what is conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit” (1:20) When we think of launching, we think up and around. But what if you were an angel? You might consider God sending Jesus into the world and think Jesus was launched ‘down’ and ‘away’: Down to earth, away from the glory of his Father’s throne. When Joseph heard that Mary was with child, the Scripture says he was going to go about what he perceived as a rational plan, in a quiet and dignified way. He didn’t seek to disgrace Mary. In the midst of what seemed right to him, the angel came and told him the real story. This story was good news and was indeed ordained by God. What was Joseph’s response? He followed the angel’s instructions. And the rest is history.

Daily Devotional

Day 1 Matthew 1:1-2:12

Commence Countdown! When President Kennedy issued his famous challenge to land on the moon, NASA had no idea how to do it. This sudden burst of technology required 400,000 Americans, 20,000 businesses and universities and $24 billion. That “one small step for a man” required thousands of steps and incredible sacrifices.Matthew gives us a reverse launch.

Day 2 Matthew 1:18-25

“But as he considered this, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream and said, “Joseph, son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary home as your wife because what is conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit” (1:20)

When we think of launching, we think up and around. This story was good news and was indeed ordained by God.What was Joseph’s response? He followed the angel’s instructions. And the rest is history.

Prayer: Here I am, Lord, I belong to you. And today, I put my trust in you. You are God, and there is no other. Let me listen to you, and do your will, by the power of the Holy Spirit, in the name of Jesus Christ, to the glory of God.

Action Step: Is there an issue that weighs you down with anxiety? What would God say about it? Listen for God’s Word. Perhaps this is a launching point?

Day 3 Matthew 2:1-12

This passage reminds me of the manger, and the manger reminds me of Christmas, and Christmas reminds me of great joy with family! In our house on Christmas day, before we open gifts, we read from our 5th Great Grandmother’s bible (yes, it’s old). We read this passage to remind us of why we celebrate the birth of our Lord and what Christmas is all about. This passage is about so many themes –the power of God, prideful actions and giving of gifts. Sometimes in our lives we try to control things through deceit. By withholding or

Page 2: Materia…  · Web viewPray, worship, study and serve over the ... out an evil spirit when we proves each case. ... daily lives so they could relate to a moral or ethical

releasing information we try to control the outcome of a situation. But in the end, our yearning for control usually backfires and results in grave consequences. I remember a time when I used my relationship in a situation to help advance a business deal. By reaching out inappropriately to the manager of the company and asking for special attention, I created a situation far worse than imagined. In the end we lost the deal, and I often blame myself for acting foolishly. Like Herod, his deceit in requesting to “worship” the newborn king worked in reverse. The Magi understood his real intentions (as did my potential customer) and took action to protect Jesus and do the right thing.

Prayer: Lord, help me to find your way and your will. By the power of your Spirit, give me the strength to do what I know is right.

Action Step: Take time now and reflect on what you are trying to control in your life and inspect the true nature of why you are taking action. Are your intentions of a Godly nature? Or are they self-serving and prideful?

Day 4 Matthew 2:13-3:6

“…and so was fulfilled what the Lord had said through the prophet…”(2:15)

Matthew describes events early in Jesus’ life that were foretold by prophets hundreds of years beforehand. This passage in Matthew reminds us that we worship the God who speaks. He is not silent and detached. He knows the end from the beginning, and he speaks. This passage also reminds us that we worship the God who is fulfilling his purposes. He is not random or arbitrary. He is not simply reacting to the choices of people, trying to make the best of a bad situation. No, we worship the God who plans, who then speaks his plans through his prophets, and then fulfills his plans just as he promised. “God is not a man, that he should lie, nor a son of man, that he should change his mind. Does he speak and then not act? Does he promise and not fulfill?” (Numbers 23:19). God’s planning, speaking, and fulfilling is true not just of Jesus life but of yours and mine as well. We are not lost in the chaos of circumstances, not blown about rudderless in a sea of arbitrary winds and waves. Our lives are in God’s hands, his strong and purposeful hands. He is guiding and protecting, fulfilling his purposes for us. Trust him!

Prayer: Lord of all, help me trust you with my life, believing that you know the plans that you have for me, plans for welfare and not for calamity, to give me a future and a hope.

Action Step: Recall times in your life when things worked out in a purposeful way that revealed God’s trustworthiness and faithfulness. Apply the same trust and faith to a current struggle you are facing in your life today.

Day 5 Matthew 3:7-4:11

“Then Jesus came from Galilee to the Jordan to be baptized by John.” (3:13)

I’ve been retired now for four years and when confronted with a decision to do one thing or another I say, “I want it all!” Young couples say the same thing when they decide to have their professional careers AND raise their families. Just like children in a toy store, we want it all! We are a people who want it all. Our reading today tells of Jesus coming to the Jordan to be baptized by a reluctant John. The Trinity was well represented that day. Jesus was just starting his ministry. The Holy Spirit was there to bring forth the voice of God. And God, the proud Father, was giving His encouragement for the journey to come. As Christians, we have this same support system. We have our own baptisms to mark us, we have Jesus to lead us, we have the Spirit to inspire us and we have our Heavenly Father to love and to guide us. With the Trinity in our hearts, that’s all we need. How blessed are we! We want it all? We have it. We do have it all! Prayer: Father, help me to remember that with you on my side I have it all.Action Step: Examine an area in your life where you’re looking beyond the Father, Son and Spirit for your support. Turn over these areas to your Father and trust in his love.

Day 6 Matthew 4:12-25

Page 3: Materia…  · Web viewPray, worship, study and serve over the ... out an evil spirit when we proves each case. ... daily lives so they could relate to a moral or ethical

“At this, Jesus said to him, ‘Get away, Satan! It is written: ‘The Lord, your God, shall you worship and him alone shall you serve.’ Then the devil left Him and, behold, angels came and administered to him.” (4:10-11)

Matthew Chapter 4:1-11 is all about The Temptations of Jesus in the desert. Jesus was led by the Spirit into the desert to be tempted by the devil. While in the desert, Jesus was tempted by Satan three times. First, He was tempted to change bread into stone. Second, He was tested to use His power for His own benefit. Third, He was tested to worship Satan himself. What did Jesus do when He was tempted each time? Jesus showed His obedience to His Father. This is a characteristic of a true son! Jesus chose to not rebel against God, His Father! When have you been tempted by the devil? What was it like when you were trying to make a decision about what to do or what not to do? What decision did you make after you were tempted? We as humans are tempted by Satan many times, each and every day of our lives. Whichever situation we are faced with on a given day, we have to be mindful of how Christ would act. This is very challenging to do, because we are human. But, if we could just take the time to think about what Jesus would do in a particular situation, then it may be a little easier to make some of those tough decisions in life. Remember, the decision you make needs to be acceptable to God.

Prayer: Dear Lord, work through me so that I can reach out to others in a positive way, especially during those times when I am trying to decide between what is right or wrong in your eyes. When I am tempted by the devil today, give me the strength to be more Christ-like.

Action Step: Anytime I am tempted by the devil, I will ask myself, “What would Jesus do in this same situation?”

Day 7 Matthew 5:1-26

"Blessed are the pure in heart, for they will see God." (5:8)

Jesus was sitting on a mountainside, teaching his disciples. He taught them what they would have to do to be "blessed;" how they would need to act, think, and feel, if they were to follow him. Jesus taught his disciples: "Blessed are the pure in heart, for they will see God." If I were one of the disciples sitting on the mountainside with Jesus, how would I have understood what Jesus meant by these words?Who are the pure in heart, and how do I become pure in heart? My heart is my inner being. I can be pure in body and pure in action, and others will notice. But purity in heart is between God and me. It is an invisible, inner quality arising from my following God’s word. What does it mean to "see" God? Is Jesus telling me that I will see God during my earthly life, or that I will see God in eternity? Jesus is telling me both: by following Jesus’ teachings in my daily life, I will share in God’s purity of heart and “see” Him reflected in my life; I will also see God in eternity, as the reward for a life lived with a pure heart.

Prayer: Lord, help me to be pure in heart, so that I may see you every day and in eternity.

Action Step: Each day I will reflect on how I am living Jesus’ teachings and trying to become pure in heart.

Day 8 Matthew 5:27-48

"But I tell you: Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you, that you may be sons of your Father in heaven." (5:44)

This passage is reminiscent of the parable of the Good Samaritan. We are commanded to love our neighbor. Who is our neighbor? Not simply the people who live next door, who we hang out with, or who attend our church. Jesus tells us that our enemies are also our neighbors. We are commanded to love them by returning good for evil.  What does it look like to love your enemy? Solomon says if your enemy is hungry or thirsty, give him food and water (Proverbs 25:21). Jesus says that it means praying for your enemy. We are praying not simply to change our enemy's behavior towards us. We are praying that God would forgive him and soften his

Page 4: Materia…  · Web viewPray, worship, study and serve over the ... out an evil spirit when we proves each case. ... daily lives so they could relate to a moral or ethical

heart, that he might hear the Truth and live his life in Christ. Imagine the life-changing impact of a kind act, a gentle word spoken, and an earnest prayer for our enemy.  Why would we go to such trouble? Because while we were His enemies, Jesus Christ died for us (Romans 5:8). Jesus loved His enemies. And when we step out in faith to love our enemies, our enemies become powerless.

Prayer: Lord Jesus, please forgive my enemies. May they turn and walk in Your light.

Action step: Say a prayer for someone who has sinned against you.

Day 9 Matthew 6:1-24

"(But) when you give to the needy, do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing so that giving may be in secret. Then your father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you." (6:3-4) How do we live a life that is dedicated to and pleasing to God - free of hypocrisy - full of love and grace - full of wisdom and discernment?  Learning how to show compassion takes real work. We must hand over our anger, frustration and resentment to God. We must ask him to be our lead so that what we do and what we say is according to his will, rather than our immediate situation. Blessed are all God's children who show compassion to others.  We must make room within ourselves to be compassionate.  May God give you courage to walk any road. May he take doubt and fear from your mind. May your face shine in the shadows and may God give you the sense to know where man and his course need you most. Serve the world with dignity and humility and never lose the opportunity of doing a kindness. May each one of us respond to God's calling. Action Step: Commitment to God and Christ is a daily calling. Renew your commitment today.

Prayer: Heavenly Father, Give us this day our daily bread. Thank you for your presence in my life. I want to have my life bring a smile to your face.

Day 10 Matthew 6:25-7:12

"Who of you by worrying can add a single hour to his life?" (6:27)"Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own." (6:34)

The telephone rang in the middle of the night. Our first fear was that our 95 year old mother was having a problem, after being released from the hospital that afternoon. Awakened at 1:45 in the morning, I tried to clear my head and listen to the message: My sister had suffered a stroke and was being transported by ambulance to the hospital. As I drove through the darkness to meet my sister in the hospital emergency room my mind raced with questions. How much damage was done? Would my sister ever be the same? Will she survive?Suddenly a Bible verse came to mind: "Don't worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself." A feeling of acceptance and peace came over me. I prayed and placed my worries in the arms of the Lord. My sister faces a long and difficult road to recovery, but the worry is behind us. Prayer: Heavenly Father, each day take our cares, worries, and troubles. Give us the strength to face each new day, confident in your presence and your saving grace.

Action Step: Take an inventory of what's troubling you today. Have the courage and trust to hand it over to God.

Day 11Matthew 7:13-29

"Everyone then who hears these words of mine and acts on them will be like a wise [person] who built [their] house on rock."(7:26)

God's words give direction to our life's journey when they speak of narrow gates, the fruit on the tree, a house built on sand and a house built on rock. We pray to God, "Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven." God's will is revealed to us in God's word. Jesus ends his "Sermon on the Mount" with a parable about what we hear and what we do with what we hear. While our culture looks for the strongest, the greatest, the most powerful, and wealth, Jesus turns our eyes to our neighbors: "That which you do for the least of these you do for me." (Matt. 25:40).

Prayer: Dear God, thank you for your words that give us wisdom to move through this world of narrow gates with visions of your Kingdom.

Action Step: Listen for God's words to gain the wisdom to leave the church building, going through the narrow gate, to share the good fruit of justice and peace with the community.

Day 12Matthew 8:1-17

"When Jesus heard this, he was amazed and said to those following him, "Truly I tell you, I have not found anyone in Israel with such great faith." (8:10)

I think my first recollection of faith was for my family, particularly my Dad. He went to work each day, collected a paycheck and was responsible to cover costs of food, clothing & apartment rent for me and my Mom. My life depended on Dad, and I had faith he would continue to provide for his family's needs. Part of Matthew 8 talks about a Roman officer (centurion) who came to Jesus asking Him to heal a soldier who was at home, paralyzed and in pain. Jesus told the officer He would go to the soldier. But the officer objected to Jesus' leaving - he knew the power Jesus had could heal the soldier with only His words. Prayer: Father, thank you for bringing your Son Jesus into my life. Help me identify one thing that I can put into practice today to increase my faith, for your Glory.

Action Step: How much more exciting would my life be if I had the same faith and trust in Jesus Christ as did that Roman officer?

Day 13 Matthew 8:18-34

Without warning, a furious storm came up on the lake, so that the waves swept over the boat. But Jesus was sleeping. The disciples went and woke him, saying, "Lord, save us! We're going to drown!" (8:24-25)

When I was very young I visited the Atlantic Ocean at the New Jersey shore with my family. Growing up in Southeastern Ohio I was familiar with creeks, rivers, and lakes but the ocean was far beyond my experience at that time. I was enthralled and walked into the water to experience immediate FRIGHT! The waves, at least two GIGANTIC inches high, were crashing against my skinny legs, and the sand was leaving my feet without foundation as the waves retreated. FEAR! But then, my dad took my hand and the waves were delightful, the shifting sand a new, interesting, and pleasant experience. I was literally jumping with joy and later even enjoyed bobbing up and down in the waves further out. Life, even with all of its waves and shifting sands can be a rewarding experience if we travel hand in hand with Jesus. Prayer: Lord Jesus, here are my hands, without reservation. Lead me Lord.

Action step: Know that Jesus is your Savior. Walk and serve Him boldly, in new and challenging ways - beyond your normal level of comfort, knowing that He has hold of you and will never leave you alone or without His love and care.

Page 6: Materia…  · Web viewPray, worship, study and serve over the ... out an evil spirit when we proves each case. ... daily lives so they could relate to a moral or ethical

Day 14 Matthew 9:1-17

Then he said to the paralytic, "Get up, take your mat and go home. And the man got up and went home. When the crowd saw this, they were filled with awe; and they praised God, who had given such authority to men. (9:6b-8)

Whenever I read the story of the paralytic whose friends carry him to Jesus, I imagine how he must have felt lying on his mat day after day watching others participate in the activities of life denied to him. His role in the story is that of a passive character. A victim needing rescue. What touches me is that his friends have not given up hope that he can be restored to wholeness. This is a story of love in action. Perhaps you've seen this quote from Marianne Williamson: "Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our light, not our darkness that most frightens us." I've always interpreted verse eight as a description of Jesus' power as the son of God. But if you go back and read the story you will find that Jesus tells the men who carried the paralytic that it was their faith that healed him. And I join the crowd, awed that God has given such authority to humankind. Prayer: God, I do not feel worthy of the power you have bestowed on me. Show me how I too can manifest love in action to a hurting world.

Action Step: Think of the friends God has placed in your life that carry you when you are paralyzed by fear. Have the courage to reach out to them in your times of need.

Day 15 Matthew 9:18-38

“Jesus turned, and seeing her he said, ‘Take heart, daughter; your faith has made you well.” (v.22)

I know of a young, vibrant, active woman, barely into her twenties, who recently survived a tragic car accident. This young woman and her mother both have tremendous faith in Jesus. Both women, along with many extended family members and numerous congregations and pastors throughout the country, prayed fervently and specifically for her healing. After more than three months of multiple surgeries, and massive physical rehabilitation, she is now home and learning to navigate the world as a wheelchair-bound quadriplegic. This woman did not return to full physical health like all those people in Matthew’s gospel stories. Yet, I know this young woman’s faith and the faith of her mother and the faith of all those people praying for her contributed to her healing. Her faith has been deepened, not shattered, by her arduous journey and she has tuned her heart to hear Jesus say, “Take heart, daughter; your faith has made you well.”Healing comes in many different forms. Every one of our physical bodies is a vessel for our living God. The healing power of God is as alive in this young woman who no longer has the capacity to use her arms or her legs as it is in the young woman who just won the gold medal in the all-around gymnastics at the XXX Olympiad in London. To be “made well” is to journey in trust with a God who “works for good for those who love God” even when that “good” and that “wellness” is healing that confounds our knowing or imagining.

Prayer: Holy, Healing God, reveal your healing power to us in new and surprising ways so that our faith, too, can make us well.

Action Step: Identify one way Jesus has made you or one you love “well”.

Page 7: Materia…  · Web viewPray, worship, study and serve over the ... out an evil spirit when we proves each case. ... daily lives so they could relate to a moral or ethical

Day 16 Matthew 10:1-23

“Behold I send you out as sheep in the mists of wolves, so be wise as serpents and innocent as doves” (v.16)

Our Lord was many, many things. Priest, King, Prophet, Lord, Messiah, Savior, Divine, Holy, Son, flesh and blood. But our Lord was no pie-in-the sky optimist. Nor did he have a naïve or a “rainbows and unicorns” power of positive thinking view of life. Jesus Christ knew full well that when he sent his Disciples out into the World that the world was indeed a nasty, hard and at times brutal place for the faith and those who hold to it. And on the path of life and ministry there indeed will be wolves and holes in the path. The same applies to us. When we leave the church, leave the building to go make real the presence of Christ we do so in a very crass and fallen world. We do so in the context of sin, pain, brokenness and evil. Make no mistake. Not all will ever appreciate what we may do on 4 November and beyond. And some may question why we are doing what we are doing. If we do our mission as just a matter of being a good-person, or doing good and kinds acts of mercy that is not enough. Our Lord requires us to go out there and do things not in the name of goodness or simple human virtue but in service to His Kingdom and give the Lord the honor and glory. If we do mission for simple sake of being nice and kind to the less fortunate we will burn out and fail. Our human flesh is indeed weak and finite. If we do things in prayer and dedication to the Lord we become a living witness to what God wants us to do. And remember. Our Lord did not send his Disciples out on their own wits and power alone. He sent them with the power and presence of the Holy Spirit. They would not fail.

Prayer: Lord God, be with me, give me strength. Help me in my moments of unbelief. Walk that path with me and bless my work this day. May all I do and say bless and praise you.

Action Step: Look forward to this day, and every day, to be the empowered missionary God has called you to be.

Day 17 Matthew 10:24-11:6

“A Student is not above his teacher, nor a servant above his master.” (v.24)

Throughout his life, Jesus showed us examples of how to serve others. We are familiar with the stories of how he poured himself out in the service of others. We remember the loaves and the fishes and the washing of the feet on Holy Thursday. Of course, the greatest example to us is seen in the passion and Resurrection of Jesus. We often contemplate the events of the passion or other scriptural stories individually, but when viewed as a whole we find the far-reaching message. We have been given a complete manual for how to extend ourselves to those in need. Our service to others is not to be one single event, but a way of life. It is not the side dish that we squeeze in around the entry of our busy everyday lives. For Christians service is the main dish. Jesus’ passion showed a total pouring out of himself for others. Every other time that Jesus extended himself to serve lead up to this culminating act. Again and again we are shown that putting others first is a beautiful way to pray and to glorify God.

Prayer: Lead me, Lord, along the path that you have placed before me. Let me see clearly, Lord, those that need my help. Jesus, I place my trust in you. Strengthen me, Oh Lord, to do your work when I am weary. Remind me, Lord that you will provide me with whatever is needed to do your will.

Action Step: Each day, find another way to help someone. What things are there that you could do for others on a more regular basis?

Page 8: Materia…  · Web viewPray, worship, study and serve over the ... out an evil spirit when we proves each case. ... daily lives so they could relate to a moral or ethical

Day 18 Matthew 11:7-19

“I tell you the truth: among those born of women there has not risen anyone greater than John the Baptist; yet he who is least in the kingdom of heaven is greater than he. From the days of John the Baptist until now, the kingdom of heaven has been forcefully advancing, and forceful men lay hold of it.” (v.11-12)

Jesus is speaking to the crowd bringing reassurance to those who questioned his kingship pointing out the miracles he performed as evidence that he was indeed the one who was to come. In the focus verses Jesus tells us that God has chosen us (least in the Kingdom of heaven) as greater than John the Baptist to advance the Kingdom of God. This is a great responsibility but even more a privilege we enjoy as a child of God, who rescued us from darkness and into the kingdom of the son he loves, in whom we have redemption and the forgiveness of sins.It takes courage and dedication to be his ambassador, to persevere, to advance his kingdom in a world of darkness influenced by the destructive and sinful power of Satan. Although we must not tell people what they can and cannot do, we should always have a genuine concern about the welfare of others and always conduct ourselves with honor and integrity knowing that God has chosen us, the least in the kingdom of heaven. The poor in spirit will possess the kingdom, but Christ-like meekness includes bold, aggressive obedience standing up for the Word of God.

Prayer: Lead me Lord in word and deed to be obedient to your Word as your child.

Action Step: Lord, help us to consistently stand up for what we believe and to do so with our words, and more importantly, our actions.

Day 19 Matthew 11:20-30

“Come to me, all whose work is hard, whose load is heavy; and I will give you rest.” (v.28) We no longer run from work to home and then back to work. We drive. We drive because it is faster than running. We live in a world that demands efficiency and speed at every turn. We continuously drive ourselves faster and harder to keep up. Jesus was under pressure to keep up. He had 3 years to prepare 12 ordinary men to start a movement that that would spread to the whole earth. That’s pressure! Besides training the disciples; Jesus was healing the sick, teaching sinners, and exorcizing the demon possessed. On top of these demands, Jesus faced emergencies. One night, while Jesus and his disciples were out to sea, a storm arose that threatened their lives. The storm demanded that they respond quickly to keep up with the waves that were flooding the boat. Jesus did not move. Jesus was sleeping. In the middle of the life’s unceasing emergencies, Jesus needed to rest. Jesus always had time to rest. Today, in the midst of unceasing demands and emergencies, Jesus offers the gift of rest. It is yours to take or reject. You work tirelessly under a heavy load. The storm of life tells you to grab a bucket and work harder. Will you respond to the storm or to Jesus? Christ had time and faith to rest. The picture of faith is rest. Will you accept Christ’s invitation to rest and be refreshed to take on the storm?

Prayer: Lord, I work hard and I am tired. Please, show me how to find rest in You. Restore a tired and weary heart with your rest.

Action Step: Determine how you find rest in Christ. Designate in your calendar a time to rest in Christ, and determine how you will rest.

Day 20 Matthew 12:1-21

“He said to them, “If any of you has a sheep and it falls into a pit on the Sabbath, will you not take hold of it and lift it out? How much more valuable is a man than a sheep! Therefore, it is lawful to do good on the Sabbath.” (v.11)

Working. Paying bills. Driving the kids to soccer practice. Serving on the mission committee. Teaching Bible study. Buying groceries. And that’s just your Monday schedule. Our lives are filled with countless activities that must be completed to sustain our needs, help others, and satisfy our commitments. Knowing this, God gave us the gift of the Sabbath: a day to worship our amazing creator and rest from the rigor of our daily lives. God desires for us to set time aside from the routines that we hold so dear to refresh and be with him. In

Page 9: Materia…  · Web viewPray, worship, study and serve over the ... out an evil spirit when we proves each case. ... daily lives so they could relate to a moral or ethical

Matthew 12, we see the Pharisees try to twist the intent of the Sabbath to catch Jesus breaking the law. Jesus is accused of ignoring the day of rest by first picking grain to eat and then healing a man with a shriveled hand. Taking on the Pharisees’ comments, Jesus instructs these religious leaders that the Sabbath is not meant to be viewed as a sacrifice made to constrict us but instead a blessing. Even on the Sabbath, God wants us to meet our needs and perform acts of mercy by helping people. Through Jesus we see this balance of loving God and loving others.

Prayer: God, thank you for the amazing gift of rest. Please open our eyes to seek opportunities to love others while loving you.

Action Step: Take some time this week to think about how you view the Sabbath. How do you balance resting with God with meeting your needs and helping others?

Day 21 Matthew 12:22-37

“But if it is by the Spirit of God that I cast out demons, Then the kingdom of God has come near to you.”(v. 28)

Religious leaders are grumbling that Jesus cured a demon possessed man who was also blind and mute. If you know someone who is struggling against addictions (i.e. drugs or alcohol), you know the demons they have to confront. In curing the man with the demons Jesus set him free from a power that was destroying him. In restoring his hearing and speech, Jesus enabled him to fully participate in community. It is to their grumbling and distorted understanding that Jesus makes the affirmation that the Spirit of God did the healing. In the Spirit’s healing God’s kingdom has come near. Grumbling often prevents us from seeing the good that we should be celebrating instead.

Prayer: O God, grant us the spirit of celebrating the healing and new life that comes from you.

Action Step: When you leave the church on November 4, give thanks for the Spirit that goes with you and celebrate the goodness of those whom you serve.

Day 22 Matthew 12:38-45

“But I will sing praises to you; I will offer you a sacrifice and do what I have promised. Salvation comes from the Lord!” (Jonah 2:9)

As a student of mathematics I often use proof by exhaustion, a method of proving something by considering all cases and if it is true for the finite number of cases, it is always true, to determine what is real in life. In Matt. 12 the scribes and Pharisees want proof that Jesus is who he says he is, the way to salvation. They wanted to see Jesus perform a miracle so it would be easier to believe that Jesus was sent by God to save mankind. I believe constantly looking for proof, proof by exhaustion, is not how God wants us to spend our time. We need to be hospitable to his message and accept by faith that Jesus is the way to salvation. Can we prove Jesus is who says he is? I think so. We can check all cases of how Jesus lived his life and come to the perfect inductive conclusion that truly he was sent by God. But to prove that is like driving out an evil spirit when we proves each case. The more cases we prove the harder it will get and we will be in worse shape than when we began. The time we send proving cases keeps from doing what God put us on earth to accomplish. Salvation comes from the Lord.

Prayer: Father, help us to have faith and accept the grace given to us by the gift of your Son. Amen.

Action Step: Examine your conscience and release those areas of your life that you are looking for proof of God.

Day 23 Matthew 12:46-13:23

“The disciples came to him and asked, “Why do you speak to the people in parables?” He replied, “Because the knowledge of the secrets of the kingdom of heaven has been given to you, but not to them.” (v.10-11)

Matthew 12:46-13:23 includes the familiar parable of the sower. But smack, dab between the parable and Jesus’ explanation are these two verses. The disciples are confused. Why are you telling them stories? Why don’t you just give it to them straight? Think about it! Have you ever tried to speak to someone about your faith and they look at you like you were speaking Greek? Just imagine what it was like for Jesus. Some people were eager for his wisdom. Some thought he was a crackpot. Some were well educated and others were not. Most were used to being told what to believe, how to worship, when to make sacrifices, and given a moral compass based on their religion and culture. Jesus brought them a message that was radical and unsanctioned by their elders. So he told stories. He needed to speak their language. His stories used examples from their daily lives so they could relate to a moral or ethical dilemma. His stories delivered a powerful message but on the surface did not appear threatening to the leaders. They were JUST stories. But stories are easier to remember than lectures and sermons!Next time you tell someone about your faith – tell a story.

Prayer: Precious Savior, place a story in my heart to share with those who don’t know You. Guide me to recognize someone who needs to hear that story. Fill me with Your Holy Spirit that I might have the strength and courage to witness in Your Name.

Action Step: Choose a story from your life that demonstrates your faith in a relatable and non-threatening way. Tell it to someone.

Day 24 Matthew 13:24-46

“So was fulfilled what was spoken through the prophet: I will open my mouth in parables, I will utter things hidden since the creation of the world.” (v.35)“The kingdom of heaven is like treasure hidden in a field. When a man found it, he hid it again, and then in his joy went and sold all he had and bought that field” (v. 44)

Pssst…God has a secret and you “need to know”! According to His Word, the secret is out, have you heard?? The parables spoken by Jesus reveal God’s hidden things of WISDOM! These parables can seem tough to understand and even the disciples asked Jesus to explain them, to reveal God’s secret wisdom, hidden and destined for our glory before time began. (1 Cor. 2:7) In summertime, we watch kids dig on the beach in the sand. These kids give it their all & with joy; they find what’s hidden beneath the sand. And we are to dig deep to uncover God’s hidden treasure & with joy for finding His treasures, we give all of ourselves for His kingdom. Just like God’s secret wisdom was hidden, the kingdom of heaven is like a treasure hidden. In this valuable treasure found in a field, we find wisdom more precious than rubies and nothing you desire can compare. (Prov. 8:11) Nothing is more valuable than our pursuit of wisdom and understanding revealed by the power of the Holy Spirit – the source of our divine “need to know” basis – and in Christ Jesus, who has become for us wisdom from God. (1 Cor. 1:30)

Prayer: Father God, lead us out of our complacency of worldly-wisdom & above all else, into pursuit of a deeper wisdom in You, Lord. May our hearts be committed in joy of knowing Your lavish love, given so freely for us all, so that we will surrender all of ourselves for You. He who has ears, let him hear! The kingdom of heaven is near!

Action Step: Commit to dig into God’s Word, pursue His Wisdom revealed by the parables of Christ; uncovering the hidden treasure of wisdom, He’s placed in your heart, set from eternity. Consider: If the kingdom of heaven is worth everything, is there anything else worth wanting, having or pursuing more than God’s kingdom, on earth as it is in heaven?

Day 25 Matthew 13:47-14:12

“At that time Herod the tetrarch heard the reports about Jesus, and he said to his attendants, “This is John the Baptist; he has risen from the dead! That is why miraculous powers are at work in him.” (v. 1-2)

But of course! I’m sure we all drew that same conclusion too, right? After all, Herod had to be a fairly well informed individual, being a “tetrarch”, or ruler over the Galilee and Perea regions. So Jesus’ ministry in Herod’s “kingdom” needed to be explained; and since no one could give quite the right explanation – “He is Elijah” no wait, “a prophet of long ago” (Mark 16:6), Herod exclaimed, “no, he has to be John the Baptist risen from the dead” (my own interpretation). In our day, what would we think? The ministry of Jesus in Galilee up until this point looked pretty solid by today’s standards. There were miracles, sermons, profound teachings, and the commissioning of others for ministry. The miracles certainly grabbed attention. Would we be so quick to think we really knew who this was? Could we trust ourselves or would we be superstitious like Herod and explain away the ministry of Jesus by something else yet we don’t understand?

Prayer: Lord Jesus, your ministry is alive, today, in us and around us. Let us see with open eyes and hearts your ministry in our day.

Action Step: Try to see the ministry of Jesus through you in the world today. Ask for wisdom as to how Jesus in will launch you for his purposes.

Day 26 Matthew 14:13-36

And Jesus says: “You give them something to eat.” (v.16)“Come.” (v.29)

Hearing the news of John’s death, Jesus wanted to be alone. Yet He has compassion on the crowds that follow him and heals their sick. Out of this unique time, Jesus performs the feeding of the 5000 and walks on water. These miracles are followed by more crowds, more sick, and more healing. One of the really wonderful things about Jesus is how he perceived humanity. What does Jesus expect from his disciples? The disciples reason, Send them away. But Jesus says: You give them something to eat. Peter asks that Jesus bid him to walk on water. Our Lord’s reply: Come. Jesus isn’t bound by the details that our doubts bring to the journey. He seems to say: You can do it. I’ll be with you.Where are we being launched? What does Jesus think about that?

Prayer: Great and Gracious God, we don’t launch into your service from a state of perfection. But we bear your name, have been given your gifts and received your call. So go with us now as we serve you this day. Awaken us to your glory and our work.

Action Step: How will you serve God today? Is there anything in your way?

Day 27 Matthew 15:21-28

“Send her away, for she keeps crying out after us.” (v.23)

‘Persistence’ is a word that usually makes me uncomfortable – a little too close to the word ‘pest’ for my liking. And yet, I am drawn to this Canaanite woman and the persistence of her faith. A pagan, this woman didn’t seem to know Jesus, but she knew, without doubt, that He would be able to help her. She was ignored. She was sent away and yet, her faith endured. Where did she get such faith? She was a part of God’s plan. Her faith, her need, her persistence provided a new direction to Jesus’ ministry.A lifelong Christian, it wasn’t until I learned in adult bible class that we don’t choose God. It is God who chooses us. Isn’t that amazing? Just like the Canaanite woman we are also a part of God’s plan. I know, like her, God will use me and encourage me if I show the same persistence of faith.

Page 12: Materia…  · Web viewPray, worship, study and serve over the ... out an evil spirit when we proves each case. ... daily lives so they could relate to a moral or ethical

What a privilege that is. But along with that privilege comes a responsibility to show others what a joy we have in our lives. I’m thinking the message is clear…I promise to be a pest for God!

Prayer: Lord, I am so thankful that I am one of your chosen ones. Help me to be persistent in my service to you.

Action Step: Where is God calling you to be a witness of his grace in your life – to whom?

Day 28 Matthew 15:29-39

“Jesus called his disciples to him and said: “I have compassion for these people; they have already been with me three days and have nothing to eat.I do not want to send them away hungry, or they may collapse on the way.” (v.32)

They were, quite literally, in the middle of nowhere. Not a McDonalds or a WAWA in sight. They had been with Jesus for three days, bringing the sick and listening to his teaching. Wasn’t He exhausted? Didn’t He just want to send them home? They probably did have food in the beginning, but after three days it must have been running low. And now, it’s nearing time to leave; how would they walk all the way home. Fathers would carry the youngest with mothers nudging along the older children tired and hungry. But, Jesus had compassion. The dictionary definition of compassion is: a feeling of deep sympathy for another who is stricken by misfortune, accompanied by a strong desire to alleviate the suffering. Jesus saw in advance what would happen if the crowd left hungry, and so he fed them. In the VBS skits, it’s the loaves and fishes that get the attention, the baskets left over. But here is Jesus, surely exhausted and needing rest himself, and he has compassion. He reaches past his own tiredness and his own needs to care for the people who followed him.Jesus will always take care of our needs. May His compassion shine through us.

Prayer: Dear Lord Jesus, help me to see others with your love. Help me today to reach out to one other person with the endless compassion that you have shown to me.

Action Step: Find a way today to show our Lord’s compassion.

Day 29 Matthew 16:1-12

Jesus was tested by the Pharisees and the Sadducees in Matthew Chapter 16, verses 1-12. In verse 11, not taking “yeast” was not being short of bread, but to guard against the spiritually contaminated. In everyday life we are challenged in our faith by the spiritually contaminated in many ways; not only by words, but also by our acts and the acts of others. An obvious example is the atheist, perhaps a friend who is always laughing at your faith and asking you to prove the existence of God. How do you answer such flagrant, misguided beliefs? It’s not easy! What about the rich who spend as if there’s no tomorrow, yet forget about the homeless, hungry, disenfranchised? I would say God is not in their life.Jesus is crying out to us to not take the yeast, to guard against the spiritually contaminated. Are we listening? Searching for that sign that Christ will and is guiding us. In Chapter 16, verse 11, Jesus speaks to the disciples saying, “How is it I was not talking to you about bread? But be on your guard against the yeast of the Pharisees and Sadducees “.Are we listening? Do we understand? Let us pray.

Prayer: Dear heavenly Father: We look for your signs, we pray that we understand and follow you guarding against the spiritually contaminated and providing bread for the hungry.

Action Step: Take a moment to identify the areas in your life that you feel are not in God’s will; and ask for wisdom in following Him.

Day 30Matthew 16:13-17:13

Simon Peter answered, “You are the Messiah, the Son of the living God.” Jesus replied, “You are blessed, Simon, son of John, because my Father in heaven has revealed this to you. You did not learn this from any human being.” (v.16-17)

Page 13: Materia…  · Web viewPray, worship, study and serve over the ... out an evil spirit when we proves each case. ... daily lives so they could relate to a moral or ethical

Peter is a fascinating disciple. His wavering between raw humanness and moments of inspired clarity gives us hope when doubts or distractions challenge our faith.Jesus asked the disciples who they thought he was, and it was Peter who boldly stated that Jesus was the Son of the living God. Pleased with his answer, Jesus told Peter that he was blessed and God himself had revealed this information. Imagine Peter’s delight! Later when Peter very humanly denied Christ’s prediction of his death, Jesus cried out, “Get away from me, Satan! You are seeing things from a human point of view, not from God’s.” What he thought were comforting words for Jesus were rebuked. So much for Peter’s delight. Six days later, Peter witnessed the transfiguration. He observed Jesus’ physical change plus the vision of Moses and Elijah. He heard God declaring Jesus as His beloved Son, but what was Peter concerned with? He offered shelters for Jesus, Moses, and Elijah. What was he thinking? How did he get lost in the details?Jesus asks us too who we think he is. Is Christ our focus, our friend, our Savior? Do we deny taking up his cross because it is hard to do? Do we get lost in the distractions of life?

Prayer: Son of the Living God, Thank you for always being there for us. Help us to see you clearly, hear your voice, and follow you throughout each day. Amen.

Action Step: Take some time each day to think about who Jesus is for you. How will you follow him? How will you keep him in your heart throughout the day?

Day 31 Matthew 17:14-27

He said to them, ”Because of your little faith. For truly I tell you, if you have faith the size of a mustard seed, you will say to this mountain, ‘move from here to there’ and it will move; and nothing will be impossible for you.” (v.20)

Before these words from Jesus, the disciples not on the mountain with Him had failed to heal a boy with epilepsy. The boys’ father then approaches Jesus, (Mt 17:18) “ and Jesus rebuked the demon and it came out of him and the boy was cured instantly.”Jesus was trying to form the new community over a(Mt 17: 17)”faithless and perverse generation.” He had given the disciples the authority and power to continue his ministry. So, why couldn’t the disciples cure this boy? The disciples failed to remember that they could not rely on their own power, but in the trust of God’s power. I work in the inner city. I am surrounded daily by individuals and families that are homeless, jobless, abused, and mentally ill, along with a host of other social issues. You might think at first that witnessing these kinds of barriers must be difficult. Yes, many days are challenging. But, every day I am blessed. Blessed to witness the relationship that so many of these people have with God- the Christ that is “with them.” Their trust is that in the power of God they will be cared for each day. I see the face of Christ shining out of the darkness of their circumstances.

Prayer: Father, we know that all things are possible for those who trust in you. Help us to place out trust in your power as we go out into the world as your disciples.

Action Plan: As you go throughout your day, do those around you see your faith in the power of God in your life?

Day 32 Matthew 18:1-20

“Woe to the world because of the things that cause people to sin! Such things must come, but woe to the man through whom they come!” (v.7)

As I read the verses, 1-20, I find Jesus' concern is for all of us, in particular for the unknowing and the humble. He admonishes us to be as humble as a little child and we would be the greatest in the Kingdom of heaven. Verse 5 tells us "And whosoever welcomes a little child like this in my name welcomes me." We are warned of offending the innocent and what serious consequences this offence would bring! Let us be wary that we do not sin intentionally in any way, remembering we are being watched by the world and our acts can encourage or discourage their choices for God.

Page 14: Materia…  · Web viewPray, worship, study and serve over the ... out an evil spirit when we proves each case. ... daily lives so they could relate to a moral or ethical

When we repent, and receive Jesus, He puts a new heart in us and by the help of the Holy Spirit we are able to do His will. He gives us discernment in what we do, so with His help, we will act before the world In a Christ-like manner.

Prayer: Father God, we pray in the name of Jesus that your Spirit will guide us in all our ways, keeping us always aware of what we say or do so we will not cause anyone to sin. Help us to be meek yet strong in your strength. Amen

Action Step: Today try to be more aware of the Spirit’s guiding in all you activities in your day. Consider all those who you come in contact with as the beloved of God.

Day 33 Matthew 18:21-19:12

Prior to a space ship launching, there’s a countdown to liftoff. During “T Minus 9” a whole lot of checks and double checks are done to ensure that the space ship can launch and return safely. NASA officials evaluate information on computer monitors and gauges. They are polled for a “go/no go” decision based on the data related to their particular areas of expertise. In the final 6 seconds, bolts that secure the shuttle to the ground are explosively released… allowing the rocket to launch!Matthew tells us what we must do to launch freely into the world. Instead of checking the gauges on a rocket ship, we need to check the gauges on our hearts… to be sure that a hard heart doesn’t get in our way of living a full life. Chapter 18 calls us to seek God’s forgiveness by asking for mercy and changing our lives. We are also called to extend that same unconditional forgiveness to those who ask us for forgiveness and mercy. How many times? Seven times seventy…as many times as it takes… Jesus teaches us. If we want to be a part of the Kingdom, we have to give as we’ve received; love as we’ve been loved; and forgive as we’ve been forgiven. What are the bolts on your soul… the hurts, the pains and the wrongs that tie you to the ground and keep you from launching? How can you ready yourself for the launch? What hurts and sins do you hold onto that need to be explosively released? Where do you need to ask for God’s forgiveness? Who do you need to forgive? How can you share God’s forgiveness with the world? As we move through our own launch countdown, release the things you’re ashamed of… and… the wrongs you’re holding onto, so that you may respond to the Holy Spirit’s calling without hindrances. Live a life of forgiveness.

Prayer: Holy Spirit, Open my heart so that I might forgive others who ask for mercy just as you have forgiven me. Guide me on the path of mercy and forgiveness rather than judgment. Help me extend grace to those I love. Amen. Action Step: So that you might “Launch” into the world to do God’s work fully, forgive someone who has wronged you… and… ask for forgiveness from someone you have wronged.

Day 34 Matthew 19:13-30

“And everyone who has left houses or brothers or sisters of father or mother or children or farms for My name’s sake, will receive many times as much, and will inherit eternal life. But many who are first will be last; and the last, first.” (v. 29-30)

We live in a very competitive society where possessions, property and being #1 are very important. Yet all of us are searching for the ultimate fulfillment, the love of God. God’s love gives us the grace and courage to reach out and be Him to others, not possessions, property and being #1. God’s love decides everything.

Prayer: by Father Pedro Arrupe, SJ“Nothing is more practical than finding God, (i.e.) than falling in love in a quite absolute, final way. What you are in love with, what seizes your imagination, will affect everything. It will decide what will get you out of bed in the morning, what you will do with your evenings, how to spend your weekends, what you read, who you know, what breaks your heart, and what amazes you with joy and gratitude. Fall in love, stay in love and it will decide everything.”

Page 15: Materia…  · Web viewPray, worship, study and serve over the ... out an evil spirit when we proves each case. ... daily lives so they could relate to a moral or ethical

Action Step: Take a few minutes and see where you are in your life. God is calling us to look at what is most important. Is it your possessions, property, your place in line or God’s love?

Day 35 Matthew 20:1-28

“…..whoever wants to become great among you must be your servant...just as the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve...”(v.26-28)

We have as God’s disciples, been asked to humbly serve and love one another in His name. As this passage reminds us, it doesn’t matter if we have been serving all our lives, or just one day, God will bless us all the same for our service. That reassurance just gives me so much joy, for you and for me.I feel God has blessed me with an extended life, because He wants me to keep on serving and helping. I ask for His guidance in what I need to do, to be a servant to all. I will continue to do this until I’m called home and hear the words, “Well done, my good and faithful servant.” What an awesome reward! As a Christian community, we need to lead and serve as Jesus taught, to appreciate others worth, and to know nothing is beneath us to do for Him. No matter how small the task, when done in Jesus’ name we are blessed.

Prayer: Father God, thank you for the opportunity to serve others, to be your hands and feet here on earth and to be examples for others to follow and serve You as well. Amen

Action Step: Stop waiting to be asked and just go out and serve. Even the small jobs are important to God. Take the initiative and serve Him faithfully.

Day 36 Matthew 20:29-21:22

“When Jesus entered Jerusalem, the whole city was stirred and asked, ‘Who is this?’" (v. 10)

In the 1940s, CBS radio ran a quiz show called “Take It or Leave It.” Contestants were asked to answer a series of increasingly difficult questions. The first question was worth one dollar, and the value doubled for each successive question, up to the seventh and final question, worth $64.00. Getting it right resulted in the greatest rewards. The people in Jerusalem asked the 64 dollar question. If they got the right answer, the rewards would be great. If not, the loss would be tragic. True then and true today. What is this 64 dollar question? Just this: “Who is this Jesus?” Is he just a man? A miracle work? A compassionate teacher? Or is he the Son of God? The events described in this section of Matthew answer the question this way: Who is Jesus? He is the Merciful Lord (20:29-35), the Modest King (21:1-11), and the Mighty Prophet (21:12-22). These answers to the 64 dollar question invite another set of questions, questions for reflection and action: Where in my life do I need the healing of the Merciful Lord? Also, how am I responding today to the rule of Jesus, the Modest King? And, what Word of truth is Jesus, the Mighty Prophet, speaking to me today?

Prayer: Lord Jesus, Modest King and Mighty Prophet, help me know you in truth, and empower me to live in that truth.

Action Step: Spend some time today reflecting on these questions in your life.

Day 37Matthew 21:33-46

“. . . the kingdom of God will be . . . given to a people that produces the fruits of the kingdom.” (v. 43)

“They’ll know we are Christians by our love, by our love; yes, they’ll know we are Christians by our love.”One of the most important questions we can ask ourselves is, if I never opened my mouth, or wore a cross necklace, lapel pin or cool Christian-themed t-shirt, would anyone ever have any way of knowing that I am a Christian? How do I treat my co-workers? How do I act around my family? How do I make my neighborhood a better place to live? How do I behave around children? Do I even notice the disheveled woman outside the Burger King who clearly hasn’t eaten in days? Do I ever make it into work in God’s vineyard, or do I only tell God that is where I am going?

Page 16: Materia…  · Web viewPray, worship, study and serve over the ... out an evil spirit when we proves each case. ... daily lives so they could relate to a moral or ethical

Jesus made it pretty clear that what we DO matters even more than what we say or how we are labeled by society. Nothing rings more hollow than to tell someone you love them while acting like you don’t. Nothing rings more hollow than to tell Jesus you love him while acting like you don’t. A bit later in this gospel Matthew also tells a story where Jesus pulls no punches about what actions produce the fruits of the kingdom. “I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you welcomed me, I was naked and you gave me clothing, I was sick and you took care of me, I was in prison and you visited me. . . . ‘Truly I tell you, just as you did it to one of the least of these who are members of my family, you did it to me.’ (Matthew 25)Yes, they’ll know we are Christians by our love.

Prayer: O God of the least and the lost and the lonely and of me, help me to see Jesus in every person I meet today.

Action Step: Feed someone, quench someone’s thirst, welcome a stranger, clothe someone, tend to someone who is ill, or visit someone in prison today, and the next day, and the next day, and the next day . . .

Day 38 Matthew 22:1-33

“He sent His servants to those who had been invited to the banquet to tell them to come, but they refused to come.” (v.3)

The invitation to those chosen is given with great anticipation of acceptance as God’s love for His son spills from an overflowing heart and cascades over humanity. They are desired to share in honoring Jesus the Christ in God’s kingdom. Every lavish detail has been prepared and nothing more than “come” is required for attendance. However the offer is met with refusal, indifference, and finally murder of God’s servants. "O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, you who kill the prophets and stone those sent to you, how often I have longed to gather your children together, as a hen gathers her chicks under her wings, but you were not willing.” (Matthew 23:37)The feast remains ready and in time the banquet hall is filled with both the good and the bad. They wear Messiah’s redemption as fine wedding clothes, but the one who seeks to enter by his good works is bound and removed to the outer darkness. “…all our righteous acts are like filthy rags; we all shrivel up like a leaf, and like the wind our sins sweep us away.” (Isaiah 64:6)

Prayer: Heavenly Father, your salvation through love is greater than we can begin to understand. “For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith - and this not from yourselves, it is the gift of God – not by works, so that no one can boast.” (Ephesians 2:8-9)

Action step: Surrender your heart and mind to the Lord and ask Him to show you His will as you hope to be a blessing for others through the work of your hands.

Day 39 Matthew 22:34-23:12

“ ‘I am the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob.’ He is not the God of the dead but of the living.” (22:32)

“So you must obey them and do everything they tell you. But do not do what they do, for they do not practice what they preach.”(23:3)

In the story of the widow the Sadducees are challenging Christ to interpret the law in the face of a woman’s misfortune. Jesus uses it as an opportunity to teach about what really matters, living according to God’s word. (Matthew 22: 23-28).Jesus’s response about God being “the God of the Living” is his invitation to move from looking at living according to God’s will as a technical exercise in following the rules to a transcendent experience of living in love. (Matthew 23:32).

Page 17: Materia…  · Web viewPray, worship, study and serve over the ... out an evil spirit when we proves each case. ... daily lives so they could relate to a moral or ethical

Jesus shares an example for a Pharisee when he answers the question about the most important commandments in keeping God’s law. God’s commandment to love one another is the way to remove all the unloving aspects of our world. It also serves as an invitation to develop forgiveness for others when they transgress, an assurance that we can expect the same when we falter. Jesus says that loving others does not mean we surrender our ability for discernment. He cautions against admiring the hypocrisy of Leaders when they command respect in the absence of love for their followers. (Matthew 23:1-12).

Prayer: Heavenly Father, I have been judging (person’s name) unfairly, but I am willing to reframe the way I see him/her. Please show me the good in his/her intentions and show me how these mirror my own good intentions, so that I can forgive us both and learn to express love.

Action Plan: Think of someone who has been difficult for you to like. Consider your primary criticism about this person and look to see if there are times when you exhibit the same kind of behavior. Imagine what Jesus would say about forgiveness and love to you both and notice how this feels.

Day 40 Matthew 23:13-39

“Woe to you, teachers of the law and Pharisees, you hypocrites!...on the outside you appear to people as righteous…”(v. 27-28)

The problem with the Pharisees is a problem of picking appearance over essence. The appearance of the Pharisees is that they are devoted, pious, scrupulously observant of the laws of God, and righteous. Of course, they do not get that appearance by saying so. They do actually follow the motion, and, like the whitewashed tombs, make sure that everything looks and sounds and feels pristine and pure. But underneath that lingers the bones and filth of what they actually are. They want to look clean for their own greed and self-indulgence; to get all of the respect and benefits without actually giving anything of themselves. Despite what they appear to be, they actually are prideful hypocrites. The challenging thing is that we can fall into these patterns. It is a thin line- the same line that separates poverty tourism from mission trips. On one side is doing a thing for our own self-interest, even if it is as small as feeling good about ourselves. On the other is actual piousness and righteousness, where we do a thing only for God’s glory, and would proudly and happily do it even if no other soul were ever to know.

Prayer: God Almighty, it is difficult to refrain from whitewashing our lives and trying to give to others the appearance of cleanliness and perfection while inwardly containing prideful feelings. Help me to be a faithful servant, doing what I do for your glory and resting in the assurance that your judgment is the only one that matters.

Action Step: This passage merits reflection on our own actions and our own motivations. Spend some time considering why we do things from donating money, to volunteering, to going to church and whether those actions are done truly for God or because it strokes our own egos.

Day 41 Matthew 24:1-28

“As Jesus was sitting on the Mount of Olives, the disciples came to him privately. ‘Tell us,’ they said, ‘when will this happen, and what will be the sign of your coming and of the end of the age?’ “ (v.3)

I opened the email asking me to write this. I smiled. This passage is difficult. Faithful Christians disagree about what some parts mean. Bible scholars, too. I cannot settle those questions. Remember, however – love is more important than prophecies (1 Co 13:1-3). What!? The magnificent Temple will be destroyed? When? What signs will show Christ's return and the end of the age? Jesus gave two kinds of answers: what will happen; what to do.What will happen? Christ’s description of the end times is horrifying. Events go from bad to worse. It scares me. You? Jesus shared this because He loves us and wants us to be ready. We will soon read His promise to be with us always (Mt 28). Remember, too – He is describing the end of the age, not the end of the story (Rev 20-22).

What to do? Watch that no one deceives you. Do not worry. Keep your love warm. Stand firm to the end. For those in Judea when trouble comes, run without delay. Wait for My return – as visible to all as lightning crossing the sky. He gives more instructions in the parables that follow. As for when, you will read Jesus’ answer in Mt 24:36 tomorrow. Stay tuned.

Prayer: Jesus, thank you for answering our questions in a way that keeps us dependent on our Father. Holy Spirit, keep our love burning bright. Father, thank you that those days will be cut short.

Action Step: Sing the final stanza of Spafford's magnificent hymn, It is Well with My Soul

Day 42 Matthew 24:29-51

“ Watch ye for ye know not when the Master of the house is coming.” (v. 42) This verse, from Matthew’s gospel Chapter 24, is highlighted in one of my favorite movies, The Shawshank Redemption. The 1994 popular movie version is full of twists and turns, including freedom and hope. But this verse, central to the theme of being ready, should cause us to pause today and always. Are we ready? Jesus also speaks in verse 44 by stating “the Son of Man is coming at an hour you do not think he will.” This question to first his disciples and then to us is, Are we ready? This can lead us to ponder the following questions:

Are we ready to go home to Jesus at any moment? If so, great! If not, why not? What part of our house (our soul) do we need to get in order? Is there a family member, friend or co-worker that we are not at peace with? Are we at peace with ourselves? Are we at peace with our lives? Are we avoiding a job change or life change because it is uncomfortable, even though the result may be better? What and who are we living for? What stops us from truly serving others? If Jesus waited to take us all until we were perfectly ready, both in going to Heaven and serving him

here on earth, he would be waiting a long time. His invitation to us to serve our fellow brothers and sisters is always there. We should always strive to prepare are hearts and minds to be ready when he calls. We never know when that will be. Are we ready?

Day 43 Matthew 25:1-30

“His master replied, “Well done, good and faithful servant! You have been faithful with a few things, I will put you in charge of many things. Come and share your master’s happiness!” (v. 21)

When I began attending a growth group 14 years ago, the question was asked, “what do you want Jesus to say to you when you meet him in Heaven?” I thought maybe “welcome home” or “glad you’re here” or certainly “ I love you” would be nice. But one of the members of my group said something that has stayed with me all these years – she said, “I want him to say well done, good and faithful servant”. You see, at that time I was all about what Jesus could do for me. I believed, because faith was supposed to make my life better, more joyful. If I had a problem, I could just pray and he would resolve it, right? But since that day in Bible Study, that verse has stayed with me and so I started to look at my days as opportunities to make Jesus proud. In the Parable of the Talents, the master trusts his servants with many things. So our Master has breathed life into us while also giving us his love, grace and mercy. How can we not want to share what we know and give of our time and talent for His glory?

Prayer: Heavenly Father, I thank you for giving me life and for the spiritual gifts that I can use to help a broken world. Reveal to me Father, where you want me to go and I will be your hands and feet.

Action Step: Today and every day, may your actions give Jesus the opportunity to say to you, “Well done, Good and Faithful Servant.”

Day 44 Matthew 25:31-26:13

“Lord, when did we see thee hungry and feed thee, or thirsty and give you drink? And when did we see thee a stranger and welcome thee, or naked and clothe thee?” (v. 44)Jesus is explaining to his disciples that the righteous and sinful will be separated when the Son of Man comes in his glory, and the righteous will be those who have cared for the marginalized, loved their neighbors as themselves, and put Jesus’ teachings into action. Just as they have cared for “the least of these”, they have cared for Him.Since 1999 I have been working with a group in Lower Bucks County called Welcoming the Stranger which uses this verse as its inspiration. We welcome the thousands of immigrants in the county by providing free classes in English, computer skills and citizenship preparation. Over 2600 students from 86 countries have benefited from these classes – 250 of them becoming naturalized citizens. The program has not only fostered dedication to a new country, but also made friends of many from different origins, cultures and religions promoting understanding and friendship – a vivid example of what following Jesus can do.

Prayer: I pray that we may respond to the needy in our communities wherever they are and however we find them by extending Jesus’ unconditional love.

Action step: We are given a mandate to help those in need – directly, or through changing public policy.

Day 45 Matthew 26:14-46 “…they were very sad and began to say to him one after the other, "Surely not I, Lord?" (v. 22)

In his book, The Four Loves, C.S. Lewis writes of those “like myself whose imagination far exceeds their obedience… we easily imagine conditions far higher than any we have really reached.” This would certainly describe the disciples when Jesus said that one of them would betray him. They all agreed, “Surely not I, Lord.” It would describe Peter when Jesus predicted Peter’s denial. “I never will.” And the other disciples said the same. But one of the disciples did betray him, and one of the disciples, the leading disciple, did deny him. Their imagination exceeded their obedience. I had a teacher in seminary who warned us against the temptations to sexual sin. I remember thinking to myself, “Surely not I.” It was devastating to hear a few years later that our teacher had succumbed to those temptations. I wondered if he had said the same thing at some point, “Surely not I.” Experiencing the gap between our imagination and our obedience is a devastating but necessary realization. This realization compels us to acknowledge the depth or our sinfulness, weakness, and self-deception. In this, it convinces us our need for God’s grace and forgiveness. And it moves us to heed St. Paul’s warning: “Therefore let him who thinks he stands take heed that he does not fall”(1 Corinthians 10:12).

Prayer: “Search me, O God, and know my heart; test me and know my anxious thoughts. See if there is any offensive way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting” (Psalm 139:23-24).

Action Step: Where in your life are you saying, “Surely not I, Lord”? Take heed!

Day 46 Matthew 26:47-68

"While he was still speaking, Judas, one of the Twelve, arrived. With him was a large crowd armed with swords and clubs, sent from the chief priests and the elders of the people." (v. 47)Our little church at Penns Park is what the United Methodist Church refers to as a "reconciling congregation." We don't care if your skin is black, white, red or yellow. We don't care if your theology points to the left or the right. We don't care if you are gay or straight. We believe that all are God's beloved children. We find richness in the diversity of our community. In the story about Judas, we see our human propensity for intolerance reflected. When people don't live up to our expectations or standards scripture can be wielded like a club. Our harsh words may become swords, piercing the hearts and souls of others.Reconciling congregations are few. We've found that people are quick to judge another's sins instead of looking to their own fallen nature. Our rainbow flag periodically disappears. Our parking lot now holds fewer cars on a Sunday morning. And yet we find joy worshipping together.

Page 20: Materia…  · Web viewPray, worship, study and serve over the ... out an evil spirit when we proves each case. ... daily lives so they could relate to a moral or ethical

It isn't easy to be a follower of Christ. Even religious leaders can fall short. But Jesus asks us to love one another as he loves us. And we try and fail and try again.

Prayer: God, who calls us to love, open our eyes to those on the margins in our community that we might manifest your grace to others.

Action Step: Who is God calling you to love?

Day 47 Matthew 26:69-27:14

Peter’s Denial: Matthew 26:69-75

Does God wash his hands of us when we walk away from his church or reject him? Consider the betrayal by Peter, the leader of the disciples. In Matthew’s account of his denial, the preceding and following paragraphs are filled with stomach-churning events of terror, violence (26:51), cries of murder (27:22), and the crucifixion itself.Peter was not by nature a coward. It took courage to enter the precincts of the high-priest in this environment. But he was not prepared to stand firm when he was singled out—three times—as a follower of Jesus of Nazareth, a charge he declared to be untrue, three times. When his disloyalty struck home in his heart, he began to weep bitterly. His bitter tears, however, suggest deep remorse, or repentance. And a couple of days later, the risen Jesus made it clear that he had forgiven and restored him (Mark 16:7).God still eagerly forgives and restores, and he has chosen his church as the home where we learn (again?) how to live, even when we may be overcome with loneliness, weaknesses, and despair.

Prayer: Read the first three verses of Psalm 71. Then, use the verses for prayer.

Action Step: Try to place yourself in Peter’s shoes when Jesus looks at him (Luke 22:61). Now imagine that he is looking at you while you acknowledge that he is a forgiving and accepting Lord.

Day 42 Matthew 27:15-31

“All the people answered, ‘Let his blood be on us and on our children!’” (v. 25)

I find this verse very disturbing and haunting. It reminds me of how we can so easily pass judgment out our prideful nature thinking that we know best and even daring the Most High God to see things our way. We speak out of anger and frustration; we speak words of condemnation against ourselves and the legacy that our lives hold. It’s so easy to do sometimes; and it takes daily discipline of prayer, worship, and the reading of God’s word to daily remind ourselves that this is neither who we wish to be nor who we are created to be. These devotionals are a reminder that we “are being transformed into his likeness” (2 Co 3:18). Stay true and obedient to your daily walk with Christ.

Prayer: For truly Lord all things are possible with you, and help us to be your disciples, never forgetting that you are always with us.

Action Step: Is your personal discipleship a daily walk with Christ, why or why not?

Day 48 Matthew 27:32-66

"Many women were there, watching from a distance.  They had followed Jesus from Galilee to care for his needs."  (v. 55)

Against the religious tradition of the day, Jesus allowed women to play significant roles in his ministry.  Women were with him at the end -- trying to care for him as he died a horrible death.  They followed him to the tomb where he was buried and were the first disciples the risen Christ greeted. What an honor it would be to care for the needs of our Lord.  To soothe his brow; to wipe his feet.  To be a part of his ministry.

Page 21: Materia…  · Web viewPray, worship, study and serve over the ... out an evil spirit when we proves each case. ... daily lives so they could relate to a moral or ethical

We were not alive many thousands of years ago.  But what a privilege it is to serve our Lord right here and now by ministering to others in his name.

Prayer: Father God -- thank you for allowing us to be part of your ministry.  Help us to carry your spirit and truth wherever we go.

Action Step:  The next time you serve someone -- picture the face of your Lord and Savior as the person you are serving.  Because you are.

Day 49 Matthew 28:1-20

“The eleven disciples went to Galilee, to the mountain to which Jesus had ordered them. When they saw him they worshipped but they doubted. Then Jesus approached and said to them, “All power in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold I am with you always, until the end of the age.” (v.18-20)

Moral of the Story: Trust in Jesus, always. Trust in your faith. Know that Jesus is with you always. He seeks to work through you to increase His Kingdom on earth. He may use you as an influence towards your family, co-workers, friends or neighbors. When you feel that others do not agree or even criticize your faith or religious practices, remain strong in your faith. Trust in Jesus. Every human experience, if given the chance can disclose God. Make disciples of all nations. Remember your example or your words may plant a seed. You may never realize the ripple effect you may cause by living your faith aloud. A random conversation, wearing a cross, inviting someone in, could all start an action of faith. Be open to Christ’s call. Trust that Jesus will make known what He is enabling you to be, in His Name.

Prayer: Dear Jesus, guide my path, let me never falter in living and sharing Your wonder, Your Word and Your Love.

Action Step: Today, share your thoughts about Jesus with someone. Find your passion in our Lord and share it.
