Current Situation
.
Subways are perceived as uninviting by the public which was confirmed by the students questionnaire; main areas of concern were: -
•Graffiti
•Litter
•Odour
•Knife Crime
•Drug Selling
•Rape
A feasibility study was undertaken that included: -
• Review of lighting.
• Appearance of subway.
• Surfacing.
• Improvement to the subway entrance.
• Consultation with community groups

Community Committee
Local Councillors
Potential solutions in consultation with community groups: -
• Enhanced lighting
• Enhanced appearance
• Cleanliness
• Improve entrance
• CCTV within subways
• Improved ‘subway experience’
Options not considered viable: -
• Revolving advertising boards
• Stage and projector
Proposed scheme: -
• This is to be a trial for future designs throughout the city – obviously colour can be subjective.
• Brighter lighting at pedestrian level• LED blue wash on subway ceiling• New brighter tiles to subway walls• New surfacing
• Improvement to subway entrances to remove the starkness
• CCTV to monitor inside subway• Music
Summary
Where are we up to: -
• Ideas have been formulated and appear achievable
• Unique lighting concept that is currently with DesignPlan for development
• Colour scheme and finishes to be reviewed by community Committee and agreed by Lead Member
• Final detailed design
Conclusion
• With your ideas and those of the Councillors and community we hope that we can complete this design that will be used to test ideas, that if successful will be used in other subways: -
1. Brighter
2. Appearance of being cleaner
3. Safer
