The environment (The air, water, and land around us) provides the conditions for developing and sustaining all forms of live.
Unfortunately, we sometimes use our environment as the dustbin for everything we don't want.

This can be the result of different processes within the same business operation e.g. a food factory will use several processes with varying degrees of impact on the environment.

When solving pollution and waste problems, the following hierarchy can help :
Prevent • Use different
methods to eliminate some kinds of waste.
Reduce • Improve
efficiency and use less packaging.
Reuse• Some
materials are reusable, so don't discard them e.g. Electronic components of computers etc.
Recover• Recycling
paper, using combustible waste as fuel.
Dispose of waste• Pay attention
to safe practices and legal requirements as applicable.

The best way to manage environmental risk is to have a systematic approach, as when managing health and safety risks :
Emergency procedure
If a pollution incident occurs, all necessary action
should be taken to minimise the size and any
adverse effects of the release. If the incident
presents an immediate threat to human health or
property, Fire and Rescue NSW, the NSW Police
and the NSW Ambulance Service should be
contacted first for emergency assistance - phone
000. The other response agencies must still be
contacted after that to satisfy notification
obligations.
