Lake consultant Mark McElroy and the OHLA Board concur that any bass over 3 pounds should be released, as these are the fish that not only spawn, but also have the potential to reach 7 or 8 pounds for an outstanding catch later on! Bass in the 1-2 pound range can be kept. Then wait for that “trophy” bass to keep! Mark also worked with Wildlife & Fisheries to check the health of the fish and our lake. They found good size bass and bream or bluegills, and also shad and catfish. The bass are getting larger and reproducing. For this reason, the board voted not to stock the lake this year. The Lake and the Bass are healthy! The board was elated to get this good news as the usual Cormorants and new White Pelicans were a concern due to their love of eating our fish population, especially the Pelicans because they were seen herding the fish to the bank to feed on them. Luckily, it appears that the bass population was not hurt, as the Pelicans seemed to prefer the Shad, which are surface fish. Notes from the president… Another year is quickly coming to pass and our lake appears to keep growing healthier and healthier! This summer we had over 40 days above 94 degrees. The lake water remained clear, no nuisance aquatic growth was found, and there were no fish kills!! This was an outstanding outcome for such a hot summer and can be attributed to the drawdown and aeration systems that are in place in the lake. A schedule for future draw-downs and also ways to help the cove and lake fingers stay cleared out was discussed and will be further discussed at the General Meeting in October.

Notes from the president…

A Reminder…… The excess water after a rain in the neighborhood drains directly into the lake! This means that anything that is dumped into the drains ends up in the lake, including garbage that has spilled out of a can on pick-up day, seasoned crawfish boil water, dregs from washing out paint brushes, and any grass or leaf clippings that are blown into the drains by lawn companies. This not only pollutes our lake, but causes more debris of acidic leaves that settle on the bottom, floating cans, bottles, plastic bags and other items that are found in our yards or stopping up the weir. Please don’t use the drains as a place to put your garbage and recycle cans. When the cans are emptied, various things can fall out & go into the drain. Also, please do not let your yardmen blow leaves & grass down the drains. Pass the word on to your neighbors! REMEMBER….Boating and fishing on the lake is for members only – boats must have their lot number and an OHLDA decal. If you need a decal, please email Roy Johnson, [email protected]

To fish or boat on Oak Hills Lake, you must be a current (2015) member and have a sticker and lot number on your boat!
