Network Status

• For Service providers– We are Ready and serving.– Through IPv4 tunnel

• For End Users– In the near future

Transition Plan

• Phase I– Dual Stack network• Each user has IPv4 and IPv6 addresses

• Phase II– Users have IPv6 address only– Access IPv4 through Carrier Grade NAT (CGN)• NAT64• DNS64

Network Challenges

• IPv6 is a new network– Limited support on IPv6

– IPv4 Tier-1 providers ≠ IPv6 Teir-1 Providers

• Network Management– Some management devices doesn’t support IPv6– Little experience on managing IPv6 network

• Access network– Limited availability of IPv6 supported modems– Upgrading current modems

Transition Challenges

• No more IPv4 addresses– Dual Stack will not last for long time– The forecast of IPv4 depletion was 2012

• limited content on IPv6 network– Introduce IPv6 to IPv4 NATing (CGN)– Use Private IPv4 addresses

• End Users – due to additional costs associated with the upgrade.– Some users applications doesn’t support IPv6.

Recommendation• Content providers in KSA– Connect to IPv6 network

• Buy IPv6-ready devices.– Make sure your devices support the features that you need

• No NATing in IPv6– NAT is not a security protocol

• Train your team on IPv6– Attend MENOG workshops on IPv6
