The HCV Resource NetworkSupport for consistent implementation of HCV approach:
• Shared framework
• Training and capacity building
• Governance and quality control
• Development of practical tools

The Network Charter• The Charter sets out the core concepts
of the HCV Resource Network• The Charter is in three sections:
– Mission: what the Network aims to achieve– Structure: how the Network is organised– Guiding Principles: the Network’s shared
view of the HCV concept and its implementation
• Agreement with the Charter is the basis for full participation in the Network
The Steering Group• Provides oversight
and direction for the Network
• Made up of representatives of users of the Network– Currently includes all
founding members– Could expand in
future to include other stakeholders
• Meets “twice” a year
The Technical Panel• Provides element
of quality control & governance of HCV concept
• Main functions:– Peer Reviews of HCV
assessments / uses– Advice on HCV
concept interpretation and use in practice
– Development of HCV concept
Current TP Composition• Selected by Quality Control sub-
committee of Steering Group• Currently includes 21 individuals• Geographic representation (Africa, Asia,
Europe, North America, South America, Australasia)
• Range of expertise (social, biological, ecological)
• Expand in future: need more LAC, social representation & industry-based experts
The Secretariat• Overseen by the
Steering Group• Provided by ProForest • Provides central
facilitation of the Network• Main responsibilities
include:– Running day-to-day
activities– Maintaining the website– Managing the budget
Network Participants• Anyone who signs
up to the Charter becomes a Network Participant
• Participants can be involved in all Network activities
• Organisations can register institutional support for the Network
• Anyone can use the website resources
Current Participants• Over 340 Network participants from
62+ countries (top 5: ID, UK, BR, US and ZA)
• Variety of sectors (top 5: ENGOs, research institutions, industry, consultancies, CBs & FSC)
• Additionally, 20 supporting organisations
The Website• Information on the HCV concept• Documents and resources including
global and national Toolkits• A database of HCV practitioners who
are Network Participants (61 registered to date)
• List of Network “Connections”• A database of project summaries where
the HCV approach has been used
Network Activities – encouraging collaboration
• Presentations/Regional events
– Sao Paulo stakeholder event (Jan 2007),
– SA Regional meeting (Nov 2007),
– Bali (Dec 2007),
– Barcelona IUCN WCC (Oct 2008),
– FSC General Assembly (Nov 2008),
– IUCN-NL briefing (Nov 2008), RTRS HCV briefing Brazil (Nov 2008),
– Oxford HCV landscape workshop (Dec 2008)
• Email contact list of > 1100 individuals / organisations
– Briefings on HCV development (once a month)
– Updates on workshops, events, new information on web etc.
– steadily increasing information resources on web– including national
interpretations, guidance and tools, country profiles, case studies
Network Activities – promoting consistency
Mainly via the TP which provides:• consistent, practical technical guidance for
users • a standard process & criteria for peer reviews • a checklist of key elements which should be
covered in HCV assessments • ensure reviews are consistent & comparable
across different applications, countries & sectors
Network Strategy 2009+• Credible central point of reference on
the HCV concept • Support the development and
implementation of the HCV concept across all its current applications
• To provide a governance and quality control function for HCV assessment
• To promote the use of HCV in emerging and potential applications
How to get involved• Become a Participant
• Register as a Practitioner
• Provide a summary of an HCV project for the website
• Volunteer as a regional information source to provide country briefings
