•Diversification to develop a fire wood production business in Bourne, Lincolnshire.

• The grant assisted with the purchase of timber handling, processing and delivery equipment

•RDPE grant offer £34,095.60

•Between September 2010 and January 2011 the business gained an additional 120 customers and has been able to process and deliver more wood than during an entire season last year.

Sutton Bridge Crop Research Centre

• £269,557 RDPE grant for new building

• 6 environment controlled stores to enable potato storage research and a knowledge transfer area for training courses and open days.

• The training opportunities offered during this project will enable the benefits and latest research data to be disseminated to and used by the potato sector, region and UK wide.

• Over 2,000 people trained by the end of the project

•Opened by Lord Taylor of Holbeach in September 2010, attended by 200 delegates

Potted herb packing and finishing centre

• RDPE grant £400,019• Bourne, Lincolnshire

• New facility to provide temperature-controlled conditions for potted herbs, from harvesting through to despatch.

• Aim to improve shelf-life and product quality, in particular during the summer months.

• Expected to be fully operational by September 2011

• By 2014 the business is expected to have increased the number of pots of herbs packed to 15 million per year and will create five new full time jobs

Leicestershire Quality Meats

• Building work scheduled for completion in May 2011.

• Will process cattle, sheep and pigs.• By 2012 will create 24 jobs.

• RDPE grant towards the costs of building a £2m multi-species abattoir in the Six Hills area near Melton Mowbray

• Construction of buildings to house a processing plant, refrigeration and storage facilities.

• Animal holding areas created to ensure the health and wellbeing of the livestock.

Lindsey Action Zone –summary to date

• Farm Diversification: 2 projects funded, total RDPE grant £44,500– Creation of Certificated Location caravan site at Hunger Hill, Riby– Creation of All weather training facility for horse and rider at Hallington, Louth.

Further projects in development/ under consideration. Low but steady levels of activity.  – Lots of promotion to farmers.

• Microenterprise: 8 projects funded, total £461k grant (£347k private investment levered in)– includes diversification projects not eligible under the Farm Diversification Measure as they may have

diversified too much already Eg: Caistor Equestrian Centre (£172k grant aiming to create 9 jobs).  Frog Hall Fisheries development; Composting project at Riby.

• Tourism: 5 projects funded, total £426,759 RDPE grant– Includes Lincolnshire Wolds Walking Festival

(This year has engaged with 25 businesses (mainly accommodation - some on farms) who are promoted in the brochure and offering discounts through the Walking Festival as a marketing tool.

• Heritage: 2 projects funded, total RDPE grant £98,439Includes a small project to establish and promote animal heritage (rare breeds).

Kenwick Farmhouse Nursery Tea Room expansion

Peak District LEADER Summary (1)

• Diversification: 7 Projects supported:  £302,394 grants awarded in total.Eg: Watson’s Butchers and Farm Shop, Hope Valley.

• Micro-enterprise: 33 Projects supported under M312 - Grants awarded - £683,500 total Range of projects supported include Manufacturing,  Arts businesses, Community businesses (2 New start catering businesses operating from Village/Town Halls). A number of businesses have been supported under this measure which have a direct impact on the farming community however are not classified as M311 or 123:

• Griffiths Mill - Wool processing business employing 3 people in the South of the Peak District• Hope Valley Ice Cream- additional funding has been supplied to the farming family to extend their ice cream

offer into smoothes drinks.• Cantrell Furniture -  A young man has opened a new joinery business on his family farm with support for start up

capital costs provided.  The new business enables him to be on site at the farm to assist when required.• Two Village shops have been supported through small scale capital costs to assist the long term viability and to

maintain an outlet for local food producers.

• Tourism: 7 Project supported under M313 - Grants awarded £180,000• ‘Extending the Season’ is a three year project providing support to food and accommodation businesses across

the LEADER area, benefiting both diversified farming businesses and the wider business community.• 2 New Start cycle hire/support businesses have opened in response to the opportunity created through the Peak

District National Park Authority’s Pedal Peak District project.

Peak District LEADER Summary (2)

• Basic Services for the Rural Economy M321 - Grant Awarded £117,000• A three year project providing support to communities at risk of losing basic

services or developing opportunities to secure additional services to benefit their communities.

  • Heritage: 3 Projects supported  under M323 -  £23,000  • 3 Small scale Heritage projects improving the area in three villages • Training: 4 projects supported under M331 – Total £40,000• A pilot training project was delivered in direct response to demand to assist

farmers to develop diversification projects that may have been eligible under M311 and the main RDPE programme.

Watsons Farm Shop, Hope Valley (Diversification)

• opened on Saturday 2nd April 2011• RDPE grant £44,363 (40%)  • Renovated agricultural store/garage to house relocated

butchers shop, using home grown meat • Created expanded farm shop also stocking other local

producers’ goods. 

• Shop and farm are part of the Peak District Environmental Quality Mark scheme and support three farming families.
