Definition: sexual exploitation (DfE 2009)
• Exploitative situations, contexts and relationships where young people receive something as a result of them performing and/or others performing on them, sexual activities
• Use of technology• In all cases, those exploiting the child/young
person have power over them• Violence, coercion and intimidation are common
Definition: Group associated
• Sexual exploitation carried out by multiple perpetrators who are connected through formal or informal associations or networks between themselves or between victims
• Can involve individual, repeat or multiple victims
• “Group” refers specifically to the numbers of perpetrators involved in the violence and abuse
Definition: gang (John Pitts, 2008 plus CSJ, 2009)
• A relatively durable, predominantly street-based, social group of children, young people, and, not infrequently, adults, who see themselves, and are seen by others, as affiliates of a discrete, named group who engage in criminal activity and violence, identify or lay claim to territory, have identifying structure, are in conflict with other groups
Definition: gang associated• Sexual exploitation that involves one or multiple
perpetrators who are themselves gang associated and where the cse takes place as a form of intra or inter-gang related violence
• “Gang associated” refers specifically to the motive of the violence and/or gang association of the perpetrator and/or victim, rather than the number of perpetrators involved
