CHARITY OVERVIEWCancer Research UK is a life-saving organisation. Our pioneering research delivers the breakthroughs which prevent, control and cure cancer. From our volunteers and supporters to our scientists, doctors and nurses, we’re all here to save more lives. Together, we’re leading the world in discovering and developing newer, kinder treatments, and getting closer to cures. We believe in our vision: to bring forward the day when all cancers are cured. It’s big and audacious, but we have a plan of attack, and day by day we’re breaking down cancer. This is what gets us up in the morning and unites us. We don’t have organisational values or behaviours – instead – a set of Beliefs which guide the way we work:

In a recent staff survey, we asked our people to describe our working culture in one word. The word cloud above shows the results. Please also visit cruk.org for more information about the charity, our purpose, our stories and our work delivering information, influencing policy and leading pioneering research to beat cancer sooner.

There are a number of internship roles within each stream. By applying to a stream you will be considered for all of the internship roles within it. The interests and skills you highlight in your application and at interview will help us match you to one of these roles.

On the form please include examples from previous work experience, voluntary positions or school/university held positions.Stage 2: Interviews in person, over the telephone or via Skype – 14th - 25th AugustIf your initial application is successful you will be given more information about the specifics of the roles you are being considered for before your interview.Stage 3: Placement offers – early SeptemberThrough the application process you will be matched with an internship role within one of the streams you applied for.

You can apply to up to 2 streams but must complete separate application forms for different streams. Each stream description will state the number of roles available in the stream e.g. 6 Events roles. The roles in each stream are largely similar; they require you to have similar skills and will give you broadly similar projects on your placement. The difference is that each role may be within a different team of the organisation or have a slightly different focus e.g. communicating with scientists or communicating with members of the public. If you experience any problems submitting an application, please email [email protected]

TIPS FOR SUBMITTING A GREAT APPLICATION Our internship scheme is competitive. Here are some guidelines to help you submit a great application.

• Apply for a stream you’re passionate about and have some knowledge of or are interested in.

• Do your research – at interview you might be asked what you know about Cancer Research UK and, more generally, about the stream you have applied for. For example, if you’re applying for a Policy & Public Affairs role, think about what’s currently happening in politics, Cancer Research UK’s successful campaigns in parliament, and so on.

• When answering competency-based questions (e.g. ‘Describe a time when you have worked as part of a team to achieve a result’), try to use a specific example. Focus on your own actions and use ‘I’ instead of ‘we’.

• Each question on the application form specifies a word limit. You don’t need to write exactly 200 words for every question but if your answers are particularly short your application may not be shortlisted to interview stage as the recruiters may have too little information.

• Check your grammar and spelling. Typos and grammatical mistakes suggest poor attention to detail.

• Complete all parts of the application form and submit it before the deadline.

• The online form cannot be submitted after 23:55 on Sunday 16th July.
