What is reading comprehension? Reading comprehension is the process of constructing meaning from text. The goal of all reading instruction is ultimately targeted at helping a reader comprehend text. If you can read, you will succeed! What is reading comprehension? Reading comprehension is the process of constructing meaning from text. The goal of all reading instruction is ultimately targeted at helping a reader comprehend text. Reading comprehension involves at least two people: the reader and the writer. The process of comprehending involves decoding the writer’s words and then using background knowledge to construct an approximate understanding of the writer’s message. What factors affect reading comprehension? Open Classrooms Next week we invite you to our classrooms to share in our reading journey of shared, modelled, independent or guided reading. We hope to see you all come along to celebrate our students reading journey this term. Look out for the invitation coming home with your child. Class splits 2018 Now is the time to talk to your child’s teacher about class considerations for 2018. Please discuss learning, peers and anything about your child that needs to be considered for their class in 2018. We do take parent requests but will consider the best teaching style for your child. All class splits will be completed by the end of Week 9 and changes will not be made to classes after this time.

In week 10 we will be sending home a postcard introducing your child’s new teacher for 2018.

Good luck and best wishes to the year 6 students travelling to Canberra on Sunday for their week of excite-

ment and educational learning. Our students will be travelling with the students from Collingwood Park and

are super lucky to have Mr O’Donoghue as a travelling companion. We look forward to hearing all about

their adventures.

Preps Yr 1’s

Last week we reached the halfway mark for the term, meaning it’s assessment time for Year One! Over the next two weeks, it is extremely important your child is attending each day in order to give them the best chance at completing their assessment to the best of their ability. Maths: This week we are continuing our knowledge of word problems. We will be focusing on key words like ‘altogether, more, less, difference, away etc.’ to help us work out whether the problem is addition or subtraction. On Friday, we will be completing our assessment by solving word problems using different strategies learnt throughout the year. English: In preparation for our assessment, we have begun the week reading the book ‘What Shall I Make’. This is a narrative about a boy who creates different animals out of the dough his mother used to cook. From this story, students will explore making an animal with playdough and record the steps they took in order to turn it into a procedure next week. Science: This week we are continuing to create musical instruments and pose questions about changes we could make to alter sound. Our key vocab words include volume and pitch. Using these words with your child will assist them in retaining meaning. As the days are getting quite hot, please remind your students to be bringing their water bottle and hat to school.

Letters, letters and more letters!! This week in Prep we have been receiving and writing lots of letters. Children in Prep A have been writing to Hairy Maclary – asking him questions and offering their opinions. They have also written a class letter to Prep children from a different school. They have done a tremendous job! In Maths this week we have been learning about capacity as well as adding. We have had fun using two dice for our ‘counting on’ strategy to find the total. In Science we have continued to learn about how objects move. In particular, how toys roll, spin and slide. Don’t forget:

Yr 2’s Yr 3’s

Welcome to week six. The term is getting away from us quickly and we are approaching the end of the year. The students have been busily working across all learning areas. In English the students have been continuing to look at poetry. They have been practising planning, writing and editing their poem. As part of their assessment they must present their written poem to the class. The students have been working on their presentation skills by ensuring they are presenting an engaging presentation to the class. In Maths the students have continued to work on interpreting grid maps and using positioning language. They have looked at the concept of a birds eye view and completed a range of activities around it. Over the next week the students will be looking at chance and completing a number of chance experiments. In Science the students will be completing an assessment that asks them the investigation question of ‘Do chocolate and ice melt in the same way?’ Just a few quick reminders; • The weather is starting to really heat up. Its

very important that the students are staying hydrated. Please encourage your child to bring their water bottle to school each day

• Library borrowing as already commenced • Homework is due back every Friday. It is very

important for your child to be completing their homework each night which includes reading, maths and spelling.

• If your child is absent from school please ensure that you are sending an SMS or phoning the school explaining their absence. There are quite a few unexplained absences for students this term.

Wow! It’s week 6 already! Mathematics Over the last few weeks, the year two students have been investigating shapes. We have learnt how to slide, turn and flip familiar shapes as well as follow multi-step transitions. Next week, we are moving onto data. English This week students are writing their final complication to a familiar story alongside their digital picture. They have been working hard to edit their work and add extra detail to their writing. It will be great to see what creative stories they come up with. Science This term we have been looking at Earth’s recourses, how they can be conserved, why we need these resources and what will happen if they are no longer available for us to use. We have looked at water, soil, air and resources found in the ground. Did you know that plastic is made from oil? Well our students sure do. Last week students were also introduced to renewable and non-renewable recourses sourced from the ground.

Welcome to Week 6 of Term 4! As you may already know, the Reverse Garbage incursion which was scheduled for Friday 3rd November had to unfortunately be postponed due to unforeseen circumstances. The incursion has now been scheduled for this Friday November 10th. The good news is that you have a little bit more time to pay the $4.80 for your child to participate. If you need another note, please contact your child’s teacher. This term in Science we are using games to investigate and demonstrate the direction of forces and the effect of contact and non-contact forces on objects. As part of this unit, we have organised for Reverse Garbage to come into the school as an incursion so that students can design and make their own game which they can then play in order to collect data. Reverse Garbage is a creative reuse center making a difference in the world by reducing waste and creating change in the way we look at resources. As part of the cost, Reverse Garbage will provide all the recycled materials and industrial discards for the science project. We are in the middle of making class lists for next year. If you have any considerations for 2018 please see your child’s teacher as soon as possible.

EUREKA!!

Friday is the day! We are SO excited to be setting off on our Gold Rush Excursion!

Just a reminder that we will be departing from the front of the school at 8am sharp and be returning to the school at 3:30pm. The bus will not be waiting for anyone who is running late as we have a very tight schedule. Students are encouraged to dress up in theme for the day or can just wear free dress. Sun safe clothing is required, even if it is in theme. A 20c coin is required to purchase a gold licence on the day as well.

Yr 6’s P&C NEWS

Hi from the Year 6 team, It’s hard to believe that it is week 6. Students have been very busy learning how to write a persuasive argument in English. They must decide whether a Literary (Narrative) or an Information text is better in convincing the reader on an important subject. Their topic is saving the rainforest in Tropical Northern Queensland. Students will be including the use of modality, analysis of the writer’s style, emotion and images in the text. I must say that I have been impressed with the level of writing so far in 6B. In HASS students are finalising the research topic of the impact of Tourism on the Great Barrier Reef. They are developing an action plan on practical suggestions on how to protect the reef. Students have finished their main Mathematic assessment tasks for the semester, so we are doing our best to revise the topics we have covered this year in preparation for High School. Finally, in Science students are undertaking an investigation into how mould grows in different environments. I personally have enjoyed the cooking this semester. Their behaviour has been very mature. I would like to personally thank Ms Farrell for running this program and all our wonderful volunteers who made this program possible. We are looking forward to the end of year farewell and our celebration of excellent behaviour when we go bowling together. At WoodLinks SS we believe that attendance matters! By attending school everyday students have the very best opportunity to achieve success. Each week we monitor individual and class student attendance. We celebrate attendance every Monday at Assembly with the announcement of the previous weeks winners. In Prep-Year 2, classes are involved in a weekly horse race and in Years 3-6, students are involved in a superhero race (located outside the library). The WoodLinks Attendance Policy can be found on our website.

‘Every day counts’ is a state wide initiative that aims to assist in improving student attendance at school through a shared commitment by students, parents, caregivers, schools and the community. To do this, Every day counts promotes four key messages:

• all children should be enrolled at school and attend on every school day

• schools should monitor, communicate and implement strategies to improve regular school attendance

• truanting can place a student in unsafe situations and impact on their future employability and life choices

• attendance at school is the responsibility of everyone in the community.

Admin News SMS Notification If your child is away from school for an unexplained reason, you will receive an SMS notifying you. Please ensure you reply back (before 3pm) to the message with a reason for the students absence do not include any emoji's or pictures as these cannot be read. Do not reply to the SMS after 3pm, you will be required to contact the school the next day or send in a note about the absence. If you can’t return the SMS you must phone the school with a valid reason. Remember that if your child is not in class by 9am when the rolls are marked, they are required to obtain a late slip from the office. Without this they will be marked as absent and you will receive an SMS.
