This stage adaptation of Roald Dahl ’s classic novel Charlie and theChocolate Factory follows the story of Willy Wonka, the famous candy maker, ashe attempts to find someone to take over his job.

For the first time in ages, Willy Wonka, the reclusive and eccentric chocolatemaker, is opening his doors to the public – well, five members of the public to be exact. The lucky five who find a Golden Ticket in their Wonka chocolate bars will receive aprivate tour of the factory, given by Mr. Wonka himself.

For young Charlie Bucket, this is a dream come true when he finds the lastgolden ticket. The very next day, Charlie, along with his fellow winners MikeTeavee, Veruca Salt, Violet Beauregarde, and Augustus Gloop, stepsthrough the factory gates to see if the rumours surrounding the Chocolate Factory andits mysterious owner are true.

As the tour progresses through many incredible and amazing candy fabricationrooms, each of the ticket winners learns a valuable lesson. What they find is that thegossip can’t compare to the extraordinary truth, and for Charlie, life will never be thesame again.

Marriages / Renewal of Vows / Baptisms

Which one of us – young or old - hasn’t indulged in the pleasure of allowing ourimaginations to spark creative ideas? Imagination is the essential ingredient forstorytelling, and we felt there could be no better story to tell on stage than one about pureimagination.

Charlie and the Chocolate Factory was written in 1964 as a cautionary tale, with the Oompa Loompas acting as the “Greek chorus”. Consider the Bucket family:poor in a material sense, but rich in imagination, family love and cohesiveness. Contrastthem with the other golden ticket winners – you’ll recognize them as inhabitants of ourcurrent, modern world; wanting for nothing materially, but distinctly lacking in otherways. Charlie was likely devised as a role model for Roald Dahl ’s own children: an

honest, hard working, helpful child witha positive attitude, and a healthyimagination.

Allow us to take you on a wonderfulmusical journey, and let yourimaginations run free.

With a cast of 40 who often require more than one costume, the task of outf itting for a full productioncan be a big job but there is always lots of enthusiastic help and this year is no exception. Roald Dahl was born in 1916, in Llandaff, South Wales, to Norwegian parents. He was a mischievous child, full of energy, and from an early age he provedhimself skilled at find ing trouble. After his father d ied when Dahl was four, hismother followed her late husband’s wish that Dahl be sent to Engl ish schools.Dahl would later describe his board ing school years as “days of horrors” f illedwith “rules, rules and still more rules that had to be obeyed,” which inspiredmuch of his gruesome fiction.

In 1939 he joined a Royal Air Force training squadron in Nairobi, Kenya, serving as a f ighter pilot in the Med iterranean during World War II. He was latersent to Washington, D.C., to be an assistant air attaché. There Dahl began hiswriting career, publ ishing a short story in the Saturday Evening Post. Soon hisstories appeared in many other magazines.

In 1953 Dahl married Hollywood actress Patricia Neal, with whom he hadf ive children. As soon as the children were old enough, Dahl began makingup stories for them each night before they went to bed. These storiesbecame the basis for his career as a children’s writer, which began seriouslywith the publ ication of James and the Giant Peach in 1961.
