• Stalin (Russia) & Hitler (Germany) sign a nonaggression pact. (agree to divide Poland between them)(also allows Germany to take Finland, Lithuania, Latvia & Estonia.) • Hitler attacks Poland in September of 1939 (World watches
and tells Hitler to stop it)
• Blitzkrieg = Lightening war…. Fast moving airplanes and tanks followed by massive infantry forces.
• Russia then moves in to Poland, Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia, but Finland resisted.(harsh winter slows Soviets)
• April of 1940 Hitler attacks the Netherlands, Belgium and Luxembourg….. From there Hitler hits France….. • Dunkirk- 338,000 French troops are trapped and rescued

• Germany controls most of France by June 1940… French resistance….
• Charles de Gaulle – a French General sets up government in London. (later President of France)
• Germany now turns to England – BATTLE OF BRITIAN • Winston Churchill is the British Prime Minister
• “We shall fight on the beaches, we shall fight on the landing grounds, we shall fight in the fields and in the streets…. We shall never surrender”
• Royal Air Force (RAF) is attacked by the Luftwaffe (Germanys Air force) • Bomb factories and cities…. Try to break British morale.
• Radar helps Britain (new)
• Enigma – decode German messages.
• Oct of 1940 to May 1941…. Nightly bombings of London
• British withstand attacks and Hitler focuses on Mediterranean and eastern Europe instead

• Mediterranean (North Africa) and Eastern Front (Russia) • Hitler’s partner is Italy’s Mussolini
• Mussolini attacks Egypt and tries to controls the Suez Canal and oil fields of the Middle East.
• Britain strikes back by the end of 1940 both sides are dug in. • February 1941 British move forward and go 500 miles, taking
130,000 Italians POW. Hitler has to step in and help (Rommel. Is the German General in charge “desert fox”)
• Rommel pushes Allied Troops back
• Balkans- Hitler attacks Yugoslavia & Greece in April of 1941 • Both all in a matter of days (11 & 17)
• NOW ATTACKS SOVIETS EVEN THOUGH HITLER HAS ALLIANCE WITH THEM!

• 1935-1937 Passed law making it illegal to sell arms or lend money to nations at war
• By 1939 Roosevelt (FDR) ask congress to allow allies to buy American Arms.

• Aug 1942 to Feb 1943, 3330,000 German troops, only 90,000 left to surrender- Russia lost close to a million soldiers.
• Italy invaded
• D Day and beyond
• Eisenhower is General in charge of allied forces…
• (Russia want U.S. & Great Britain to attack German held France)
• July 1943 Allied forces land in Italy and by September, Italy surrendered. (Mussolini tries to pose as a German Soldier. )
• Mussolini is shot and body hung in downtown Milan….
