CHINA Voice of Pujiang QSL. TX location midst in downtown Shanghai ?

I discussed that matter with Hungarian DXer Istvan Hegedues, who receivedthis V of Pujiang QSL and friendly letter last autumn too.

    Seems the SW site for V of Pujiang (Shanghai-Zhenru) is here:31 16 47 N 121 23 26 E

    { or at 31 16 55.28 N 121 23 24.29 E also some masts visible ... wb.}

According to web sources, it's a utilities site also used for the three SWtransmitters used by V of Pujiang. Two frequencies are beamed roughlysouth to Taiwan, and one more SW towards Hong Kong, which seems to fitwith the antennas visible on G.E. it looks like one small curtain ordipole+reflector, and a couple of log-periodics.(Alan Davies-INS, SW TXsite Dec 1, 2009)

CHINA/AUSTRALIA/U.K./USA China jamming broadcasts from BBC, VOA andRadio Australia.

[so maybe it's temporary for the ChiCom succession gh]

"Censorship" campaign blocks BBC in China.Ben Webster, Media Editor and Leo Lewis in Beijing.Published on February 26, 2013 London The Times.

The BBC World Service has been blocked in China in what appears to be anintensification of the Government's censorship campaign as it approachesthe climax of its once-a-decade transition of top Communist Party leaders.

The BBC is among several broadcasters affected by short-wave jamming, butis the only one to have gone public. It identified some jamming of WorldService English frequencies in November but this month found that it hadintensified.

Three quarters of 134 frequencies in China checked on February 13 were

jammed. The "co-ordinated" effort made it likely that a well-resourcedcountry such as China was the source of signals, the BBC said.

Peter Horrocks, director of BBC Global News, said: "The jamming ofshortwave transmissions is being timed to cause maximum disruption to BBCWorld Service English broadcasts in China. The deliberate and co-ordinatedefforts by authorities in countries such as China and Iran illustrate thesignificance and importance of the role the BBC undertakes to provideimpartial and accurate information to audiences around the world."

  • 7/29/2019 WWDXC 5-Mar-13

    12/40

The BBC said it was "working with UK authorities to identify the origin ofthe jamming signals".

Chinese authorities have already blocked the websites of Bloomberg Newsand The New York Times in China after they published stories thatembarrassed China's leaders. Other organisations, including The WallStreet Journal, have recently said they have been victims of hacking, withChina as the prime suspect.

There are less than two weeks to go before the National People's Congressformally installs Xi Jinping as the country's next President.

The 10-day parliament is a moment of critical importance for Beijing andone which the authorities are anxious will pass without incident.

One of the key fears is the continuing campaign of self-immolations byethnic Tibetans protesting against rule by Beijing. The burnings passed agrim milestone earlier this month with the 100th person to set themselveson fire.

Despite its history of interference with foreign media, and blockage ofentire Western news websites within China, jamming of the BBC's Englishservice is unusual.

BBC sources said they were surprised because the World Service in Englishhas a low number of listeners within China. That suggests that Beijing'sdrive is more broadly focused and may be targeting short-wave radio as ameans of communication between Tibetan groups outside China and protestersinside the country.

In common with other broadcasters whose news services are shown in China,BBC World is subject to regular interference - the notorious "blackscreen" that descends whenever there is coverage of a topic that Beijingdeems too sensitive.

The most common triggers for the black screens are stories about Tibet, anything that mentions or includes images of the Dalai Lama and news abouthigh-profile dissidents. Stories about pollution and poverty are allowedto run, but significant instances of civil unrest and anything toocritical of the top Communist Party leadership are black screened.

The BBC has responded to interference in the past by winding down itsChinese language website and Chinese language version of the WorldService. Both are understood to have been the targets of jamming orinternet blocking by Beijing.

The Chinese language version of the website was allowed to run freely

during the 2008 Beijing Olympics when the eyes of the world were on Chinabut after the athletes and the crowds left China, censorship began inearnest.

BBC Persian transmissions in Iran have been jammed in recent years andbroadcasts during the political unrest in Egypt. The Soviet Union wasbelieved to have blocked BBC broadcasts during the Cold War.

CHINA [non] Voice of Tibet 7557 / 7547 kHz at 1330-1400 UT.Typical procedure from a few days of listening:

1330 VOT signing on on 7557 kHz, seems to be only in Chinese.7557 kHz has a co-channel strong digital UTE.

1331 Buzzer jammer starting with center frequency on 7555 kHz.1333 Firedrake jammer starting on 7555 kHz.1342 VOT switching to 7547 kHz.

The switch is momentary, i.e. with no carrier break.1344 Buzzer off 7555 kHz.1345 Firedrake off 7555 kHz.1347 Buzzer back, now on 7545 kHz.1348 Firedrake back, now on 7545 kHz.1400 all transmitters off within seconds.

    All times area somewhat variable.

The Buzzer is a new type of jamming introduced by the Chinese a few monthsago and now becoming more widespread. The signal is DSB with no carrierand the audio is of the squarewave type with maximum audio strength about+/- 2.5 kHz from the suppressed carrier. Just as the buzzer starts it hasa second or two of only carrier.

I have no idea whether the buzzers are refitted voice/music jammers or area new generation specifically made for the purpose. Anyhow, they areprobably the result of the new harder line government that recently tookoffice. Apparently the Chinese transmitters are tunable only in 5 kHzsteps and the VOT people make use of this by using offset channels.(Olle Alm-SWE, 4 March; via wwdxc BC-DX TopNews)

Better enjoy this bigsig from NHK English while you can (and if you canget it, the other GUF relay at 1200 UT on 15190 kHz), since in A-13, NHKplans to *abandon North America* with no more broadcasts to here inEnglish or even Japanese. Various other relays will still be used to otherworldparts, but not GUF, which only WYFR wanted to employ for a few hoursto LAm, but that's not enough to keep it financially viable; so apparentlyMontsinery is to follow in the footsteps of Sackville and Bonaire, beclosed down. NHK will still try to reach Latin America from Franceinstead.(Glenn Hauser-OK-USA, dxld Febr 27)

Rumour: Closure of Montsinery-GUF.See below. For now I call it a rumour since I have not heard otherwise ofsuch a development, instead heard that at the Wertachtal plantpreparations were under way to set up a remote control for both Issoudunand Montsinery, as already in place for Nauen.

Btw, one of the two Wertachtal transmitter halls has been closed at theend of the A12 season, instead of closing Nauen altogether. I understandthat hereby all 70s vintage transmitters have been withdrawn from service,

leaving only the S 4005 rigs originally installed there, the ones moved infrom Zeewolde ("Flevoland"), the S 4001 transmitters moved in from Juelichand, I think, also the single RIZ transmitter that has, under a"Telefunken S 4050" designator, been installed as prototype for amodernization that never took plavce because, as well known, DeutscheWelle instead terminated its use of the site at yearend 2006.

    - G3 DRM transmitter is currently out of order with lack of spare parts,

    transmitter.(Kraig-VA-USA KG4LAC, dxld March 3)

Re: Mighty KBC 7375 kHz no show. It's indeed the antenna featured on this stamp

However, it is not the original East Berlin made (not Russian made, thisapplied to Koenigs Wusterhausen SW site, shut down in 1993, and two of thethree original 500 kW rigs at Nauen, shut down in 1997) transmitter. Ithas finally been closed and scrapped in 2000 after being used up untilthen by both DW and RNW.

Instead it's now a West Berlin made transmitter by TELEFUNKEN from theeighties, in 2006 moved in from DTK Juelich site to revive this antennabecause it would have been a shame to let it rust away. This way thetransmitter of course escaped the decline of the complete Juelich SWstation.(Kai Ludwig-D, dxld March 3)

Heard on 4850 kHz here in Calif. on Feb 15 from 1335 to 1450 UT tune out.Normal program format till 1402 UT; then political talks and speeches inEnglish addressing "the people of Nagaland" and talking about issuesdealing with the "Northeast region"; easy listening filler music betweenspeakers; frequent "This is All India Radio Kohima" IDs; poor due to yetanother day of persistent OTH radar and some light PBS Xinjiang QRM. KOREA D.P.R. NORTH Some of the Kujang transmitters are having acrosstalk problem. On 7570/12015 kHz a second audio signal and a jammingsignal are heard in the background. The same problem seems to affect twoother transmitters, which have the audio of the first two in thebackground and whose audio is the background audio of the first two.

The jamming signal is synchronous with the 6349/6360/6480 kHz group ofjammers. These seven transmitters thus must have something in common, likea shared transmitter hall or antenna field.(Olle Alm-SWE, 4 March; via wwdxc BC-DX TopNews)

KOREA D.P.R. NORTH Fixed frequency jammers. From mid December I have

noted three fixed frequency jammers on 6060, 6360 and 6480 kHz. During midwinter propagation they could be heard in continuous operation from before0800 until past 2300 UT. During this time they did jam something only fora few odd hours, the rest being wasted output.

RUSSIA The "buzzer", 4625 kHz.

This one is again producing spurs on the higher side. This has happenedseveral times before, so the transmitter probably has served its usefullife. The signal of the buzzer is USB plus carrier, the carrier sometimesbeing reduced.

Today it emits about 20 buzzes per minute. Years ago it was 59 bpm. Inyesterday's short buzzes the basic audio frequency was increased slightlyduring each buzz, like so called chirp radar. In today's longer buzzes thebasic audio frequency varies slightly up and down with three or four suchperiods in each buzz. A few months ago there was a period when the pitchwas much higher than what we normally hear. I do not know if this wasintentional or caused by a faulty feeder circuit. I happened to be tunedin when the pitch was all of a sudden turned back to normal. The audiofrom time to time contains crackling reminding of an old time telephoneline.(Olle Alm-SWE, 4 March; via wwdxc BC-DX TopNews)
