a surprise attack BUT US decoded the plan – knew what was coming

• J attacks! But US planes are waiting in the distance

• US surprises J – destroy planes & aircraft carriers

• J loses! Shows that they can be defeated!

• J building air base on Guadalcanal (island)• US attacks• J loses calling it “the Island of Death”

– 23,000 / 36,000 J soldiers will die• American journalist said this, “Hell was furry

red spiders as big as your fist, giant lizards as long as your leg, leeches falling from trees to suck blood…Hell was the sour, foul smell of the squishy jungle, humidity that rotted a body within hours…Hell was an enemy…”
