Anthem for Doomed Youth by Wilfred Owen

What passing-bells for those who die like cattle? Only the monstrous anger of the guns.Only the stuttering rifles' rapid rattle Can patter out their hasty orisons. No mockeries now for them; no prayers nor bells, Nor any voice of mourning save the choirs,-The shrill demented choirs of wailing shells; And bugles calling them from sad shires. What candles may be held to speed them all? Not in the hands of boys, but in their eyesShall shine the holy glimmers of goodbyes. The pallor of girls' brows shall be their pall;Their flowers the tenderness of patient minds, And each slow dusk a drawing-down of blinds.

Intended Audience: American Citizens

Purpose: The purpose of this poem is to convince Americans that war is not necessary. It shows the horrifying reality of war for soldiers and declares that the bloodshed and death should be avoided.

Author’s Point of View: The author, Wilfred Owen, believes that war is tragedy and the death of soldiers is the only thing that will be achieved through war. He implores Americans to look at the reality of war and understand the consequences not only for these soldiers, but also for their loved ones and their families.
