Biographical Sketch

Dr. Bravo, a native of Santiago, Chile, completed a Masters in Sport Administration from The Penn-sylvania State University (1991) and a PhD in Sport Management from The Ohio State University (2004). In the fall of 2004, he joined the Sport Management Program at West Virginia University, where he currently teaches undergraduate and graduate courses in sport governance, sport in the global market, research methods, and history and philosophy of sport. Prior to joining academia, he worked for ten years (1991-2001) as the executive athletic director at Fundacion Club Deportivo Universidad Catolica, in Santiago, Chile. In that capacity he was involved with the entire operation, including finance, marketing and human resources of one of the largest multi-sport clubs in South America. In 1994, he was invited to the Advisory Council for Sport by the President of Chile to lead a research project to establish the base for the Law of Sport in Chile.

Dr. Bravo’s research interests have been significantly influenced by his unique blended experi-ence of serving in both the practitioners’ and the academic world. Currently, his interests include organizational behavior as applied to sport organizations, and the policy and governance aspects of sport, specifically from a cross-cultural perspective. In the area of organizational behavior, he has examined problems related to interpersonal and inter-organizational trust, cooperation, and the role of psychological contracts in sport organizations. His work on policy and governance have examined the role of public and private structures in shaping the sport system across Latin American countries. His work have been published, among others, in the International Journal of Sport Marketing and Sponsorship, International Journal of Sport Management and Marketing, Sport Management Education Journal, Journal of Sport Management, Management Leisure. He is the co-editor of the textbook, International Sport Management (Human Kinetics, 2012) and the main editor of Sport in Latin America: Policy, Organization, and Management to be published in 2015 by Routledge in the U.K.

Since 2005, Dr. Bravo has presented his research at the annual conferences of the North American Society of Sport Management (NASSM), North American Society for the Sociology of Sport (NASSS), and the International Society for Comparative Physical Education and Sport (ISCPES). He has also been invited to present lectures and keynote speeches in Brazil, Chile, China, Macao, Japan, Korea, Mexico, and Venezuela. In 2008 and 2009 he became instrumental in the creation of two Latin American academic organizations related to the study of sport: the Latin American As-sociation for Sport Management (ALGEDE) and the Latin American Association for Socio-Cultural Studies in Sport (ALESDE).

Tell us about yourself (undergrad, previous jobs, current position and a little bit about what you do, and personal info if you would like to give any)

I grew up in Harrisonburg, VA, the son of a successful head college baseball coach. I am a product of the student-athlete experience, I played baseball for four years at James Madison (including one for my Dad). I was an average player at best, but the experience shaped my life in significant manner. Intercollegiate Athletics offers an educational opportunity not easily replicated elsewhere on campus.I was not good enough to play professional baseball but I wanted to work “in sports”. So, I applied and was accepted into the Sports Management program at WVU. Rob Mullens (AD at Or-egon) and I were in the program together and our friendship developed at WVU. I loved it there and the program enabled me to get my foot in the door for my first job (actually an internship) with the Nashville (TN) Sounds (AAA affiliate, then, of the Chicago White Sox). You learn how to do a little bit of everything in minor league baseball administration. After 3 years in minor league baseball I realized my passion was for college athletics. The next 20+ years were spent at various stops, primarily in development and external operations, at James Madison University, Auburn University, West Virginia University, University of Missouri, and the University of Cincinnati….before my arrival at Virginia Tech as Athletic Director 10+ months ago. I hope to earn the right to be at Virginia Tech for a long time, a destination job for me, a Virginia native.

How did WVU help prepare you for a future in the sports industry?

I owe a lot to the program. It gave me the foundation for success in this industry although I still have a lot to learn! The professors, classwork, my graduate assistantship, and my classmates were tremendous. I am a proud Mountaineer alum! I enjoy the Starting Line Up and receiving my Alumni Directory each year. The program prepared me well and helped me get my foot in the door in this industry. That head start we all need, then it’s up to us. A master’s degree in this in-dustry is a must in my opinion, that first key, focused step to differentiate yourself from the pack.

What advice do you have for those who want to get into the industry?

Focus more on who you work for than what your title or salary will be. Leaders (AD’s) that have proven to have a successful, dynamic departmental culture and a sincere belief in ca-reer development for their employees are best for your development and upward mobility. Find them and work for them! The titles and money will come later. Mike Alden at Missouri did more for me in my five years at Missouri than in my 15 years prior, combined. I would not be an athletic director if it weren’t for Mike. He pushed me very hard at times, but he also developed me and invested in my career growth. What is something you have learned that helps you each day?

•Praise and Blame…it’s all the same. •Character and Competence define successful leadership in its simplest form. Nothing can tear down good leadership faster than poor character. Having good character alone does not make one a great leader, they must have a track record of competence to go along with it. If you have both, success as a leader will follow.•Faith and Family, find firm foundation to stand on, this job and profession will come at you from all sides. •Exercise

What advice do you have for those who want to get into the industry?

I always say I don’t give advice on this topic, only opinions, because there are so many roads into the industry these days and many ways to succeed for those who are willing to work hard at it and be dedicated to it. Everyone needs to choose the path that is right for them. It is likely that most people reading this will already be on their way in terms of one thing that worked well for me, and I believe is very valuable in today’s climate...an advanced degree from a high quality program. In some cases, as the field has continued to become more advanced and competitive, a graduate degree is becoming required (or at least preferred) even in entry level positions. That said, regardless of how you prepare yourself educationally, my opinion is the real key is going strategically after the right initial professional experience, busting your butt and doing great work once you get it, and networking all along the way. I found the most important skills/traits to hone early in your career in this business are your work ethic, communication skills, and creativity. And, by creativity I don’t necessarily mean poetry or artwork, but rather how you can creatively solve problems or innovate for your employer.

What is something you have learned that helps you each day?

As I have been fortunate enough to progress professionally, the thing that helps me most each and every day is being able to prioritize effectively and manage my time wisely. There are never enough hours in any day to get done everything you want to get done either personally or professionally. If you have the innate ability or are smart enough to learn how to best prioritize your task lists based on the needs of your boss and the other important constituents in your life, your inbox will always be full, but you will always find a way to get the most important things done. Further, if you work hard at managing your time each and every day, you will also get them done on time. It sounds simplistic, but don’t waste your time or other people’s time. It’s the most valuable thing we have.

How did WVU help prepare you for a future in the sports industry?

My two academic years in the WVU Sport Management program were instrumental to my professional development and career preparation, both in terms of its relevant curriculum and quality instructors as well as the real world and practical experience I received through my graduate assistantship in the Athletic Department’s marketing office. There were many relevant lessons I took away from my time at WVU, but primarily the Sport Management program and working in the Athletic Department furthered my knowledge of the sports industry, allowed me to continue honing my communication and market-ing skills, and helped me to build upon my professional network.
