Accident prevention

Please note!Refrigerants in combination with openflames or hot surfaces can produce toxicgases (fluor gas, phosgene). Even at lowconcentrations these gases arerecognisable by their pungent odour.

Serious frostbite will result, if liquidrefrigerant comes into contact with skin. Therefore, always wear protective goggles(0899 102 110) and gloves (0899 430).Leather or fabric gloves are not suitable forthis purpose. Gaseous refrigerant is heavierthan air. Therefore, there is a danger ofsuffocation near the floor level or in workpits. Always provide sufficient ventila tionwhen handling refrigerants.

Always make sure of the followingwhen handling refilling bottles:• Do not expose bottles to sunlight or heat.• Protect bottles against frost.• Transport bottles upright.• Do not drop bottles.• Always close bottles securely.

Filling bottles with one valveBottles without ascending pipe must beturned upside down for the purpose ofextracting liquid refrigerant, ie filling valvepointing downwards.

Filling bottles with two valvesIn these bottles, the ascending pipe islocated inside. The bottle must not beturned upside down.

First aid

If fumes are inhaled:Move patient to fresh air location, keepwarm, let patient rest. If necessary, giveoxygen. Call physician immediately.

In case of respiratory standstill or irregular breathing, (perform artificial respiration)Call physician immediately.

In case of cardiac arrest, (perform heartmassage) Call physician immediately.

After contact with skin:Flush affected area with water.

After contact with eyes:Flush eyes with lots of water for at least 15 minutes. Consult physician.(1895 100 010 eye wash dispenser).

COOLIUS air conditioning programHOW YOU CAN BENEFIT FROM IT:Servicing of air conditioning systems is oneof the growth markets of the future.

Almost all new automobiles will beequipped with standard air conditioning inthe future. Even today up to 72% of smalland medium cars come equipped withfactory air conditioning.

Air conditioning system disinfection and regular service checks represent additionalservices for you and, above all, for thehealth of your customers.

Refrigerants must not be mixed. Therefrigerant specified for an air conditioningsystem must be used exclusively. Airconditioning systems that are filled with therefrigerant R12, cannot and must never betopped up or refilled with the refrigerantR134a (different components and compressoroils are required). However, an R12 airconditioning system can be converted toR134a using a retrofit process.

2008 coolius.qxd:coolius 2008.qxd 15/2/08 16:31 Page 3

Page 4: Würth Coolius Brochure

a) It is of vital importance to collect therefrigerant in a service unit whendraining an air conditioning system.Under no circumstances may therefrigerant be discarded outside orinto the sewer.

b) When using the service unit, it isimportant to observe the operatinginstructions by the manufacturer.

c) Pressure may still build up in an alreadydrained air conditioning system due toremaining refrigerant residue in thecompressor oil.

d) Utmost caution is required whenperforming welding work near an airconditioning system. Care must be takennot to expose parts of the airconditioning system to excessive heat, since this may destroy the hoses andresult in danger of explosion.

e) After paint work is done on the car withsubsequent drying in the bakingchamber, air conditioning systems filledwith R134a must not be exposed totemperatures higher than 70 to 80°C.

The most important prerequisite whenworking on air conditioning systems is cleanliness. Any foreign substances, such as air, moisture or dirt in thecirculation will impair the function of the air conditioning system.

f) Prior to loosening refrigerant hoseconnections and connectors, theseMUST be cleaned to remove allcontaminates, in order to prevent anycontamination of the system.

g) All open connectors must be closedimmediately with sealing plugs (0964 764 026). Sealing with adhesivetape is NOT suitable.

h) Always make sure that tools, measuringdevices and replacement parts are freeof any contaminates.

Refrigerant is highly hygroscopic, thatis it immediately absorbs humidityfrom the air. Keep the refrigerantcontainer closed at all times.

i) O-rings must always be replaced afterconnections are loosened and must belubricated with refrigerant oil (PAG) priorto installation.

j) If the air conditioning system has beenopened for service, always replace thedryer cartridge.

k) After completion, check all connectionsfor leaks (0964 764 025 and 0964 764 009).

Loss of refrigerant between 60-130grams per year is normal. Even afteran operating time of two to fouryears, under filling of the airconditioning system is normal. In these cases, topping up orrefilling without replacement ofcomponents is required.

1) Make certain that the valves for highand low pressures at the airconditioning service unit are closed.

2) Connect the high pressure (red) and lowpressure (blue) lines to the quick actioncouplings of the air conditioning system.

3) For the following checks, make sure thatthe engine is running at a constantspeed of about 1500rpm.

4) Set the air conditioning system tomaximum cold setting and the blower tomaximum level (recirculation).

5) Temperature check:Attach a digital thermometer (0764 000 013) within the centre air outlet on the dashboard. The temperature reading at the centreair outlet should be between 3 to 6.5°Cat an outside temperature of 20°C.Forreference values refer to Diagram 1.Should the measuring values deviatefrom the reference values, performa pressure check.

6) Pressure check:Verify whether or not the high and lowpressure values at the pressure gaugesare within the reference values:• low pressure• high pressureFor reference values refer to Tables 1and 2.

7) For possible causes of errors, if values areoutside the tolerances: refer to Table 3.

8) Prepare for disinfection of airconditioning system:• Check and replace micro air filter.• Check drain tube of condenser for

obstructions and clean it.• Check whether the air conditioning

system functions properly with recirculation air and outside air supply (air conditioning systems should preferably operate with outside air only).

• Now you can apply the disinfectionspray in accordance with instructionsfor use.

Air conditioning O-Ring assortments

O-rings for air conditioning systems must beresistant to refrigerants, such as R134a, R12,R413. These O-rings for air conditioningsystems are made from EPDM. In order toprevent mix-ups, automotive manufacturerstend to use green, purple or, in some cases, yellow, colour coded O-rings. The O-ringsor sealing rings of our COOLIUS range ofproducts are all refrigerant-resistant.
