Hey I just met you..... And this is crazy.... But here’s my number.... See me maybe... Okay, we all love the classics and the catchy music that America pumps out, but we’re in Manila, the land of amazing musicians! So turn over to page number 37 and check out our great list of no cover bands. And if you’re in the mood to move, we’ve got DJs too.START HERE: FUNKY FRESH! CHECK OUT “MY MANILA” FOR NEWS ON MUSIC!
Good Morning! Are you ready for the heat? I hope you have your Good Morning Towel handy because today’s going to be a scorcher.
Bandanas are all good and useful to keep our foreheads dry, but what if you’re driving a car or walking to a business meeting, nothing’s going to keep your shirt dry quite like the Good Morning Towels- aside from the AC, of course. So if you want to embrace a little local culture, follow these easy steps. 1. Get a towel 2. Stuff it down the back of your shirt. 3. Smile because your not the sweaty-back-guy.
My friend told me the other day the she got a week off work because she showed the boss her “angry eyes”. I thought she was crazy, but apparently she had “sore eyes”- as the locals call it.
Sore, angry or pink, however it’s called, those unlucky few that get it, usually will have the week off to recover. So I guess if you want some time off to enjoy summer, all you need to do is show your boss your angry eyes.
Bar themes so good that it makes it hard for the other guys to compete. I wouldn’t expect anything less from Manila. We’ve gone, we’ve tasted and we’ve chilled out in some of the coolest bars in the city.

SKATE!The Skate Scene has been picking up in Manila over the last couple of years and with it, so have the skate shops, competitions and skate areas open to those interested in hopping on a board. But just as there are different types of boards there are different shops.
If you’re looking for an all around great shop that even sells wake skates, check out Will Violago’s shop at COG (Center of Gravity) and even practice at their skate park or watch one of their competitions.
If you’re into events from competitions to push races check out Padraska Skateboarding. Roy Estillero has done an excellent job putting on events for the last ten years all over the Philippines.
If you want to buy a board for downhill riding, you’ve gotta talk to Paul Luap down at Manila Long Board.
Check out J&S Surf Shop in Makati where Spenser has a great team of guys who can talk shop about skating, surf and other water sports.
If you’re not ready to buy a board, you can show up anywhere there are skaters. Chat up some skaters at the Fort near the soccer field or at a COG or Padrask Skateboarding event and we’re sure someone will have a board for you to try out. The skater community is very welcoming, warm and filled with awesome people. These guys are all easy to find on facebook and like any enthusiast, they’ll love to chat you up about their sport.
When most of us think of skating we automatically picture a young teen flipping a trick board with his feet while hopping off a curb or doing tricks off a ramp. Skating on a trick deck posses a great challenge and despite how intimidating it looks the basics aren’t that difficult to pick up, they only require a little time and dedication.
SKATEBOARDING
SKATE!
If long boards are your thing, but so is speed, head to Manila Long Board in the collective and talk to Paul. He’ll fit you for a downhill skate board and with some training, a helmet, safety gloves and guts. You too will be flying down a hill at 60Km. If you’re more of the “I want to watch it not do it” type, check out their Faceook page for videos and upcoming competitions
Ever go for a really long walk to soak up the glory of the day while admiring all the small detail of the passing homes shaded by trees. If long walks aren’t quite fast enough, then you might be a long boarder type. It’s a great way to cruise around a neighborhood or to commute short distances. The boards are wider, longer and the stability of the board is like a bike with training wheels.
LONGBOARDING
DOWNHILL
Still not satisfied? Want to stay cool, but don’t want to worry about the ground and your face ever meeting? Then Wake-Skate might be your thing.
Imagine if a skateboard and surfboard got married and had babies. That’s wake skating in a nutshell. The boards are cheaper than a wakeboard setup and they definitley have an edge when it comes to the
cool factor at the wake park.

FOR THE LOVE OF HOCKEY
Passion runs in the blood of Filipinos. Whether it’s boxing, music, or wake boarding, Filipinos are known to excel in anything they love. Now. There is a new passion in the Philippines. Hockey.
Meet Francois Gautier. The Hockey Commissioner at MOA’s ice skating rink.
He has lived and breathed hockey his entire life and is now heading the whole hockey league in Manila.
In the fall of 2008, Francois along with other helpful hands created Philippine’s first mini league with nothing but pure passion and dedication to the sport.
Francois and his hockey league shows that hockey is more about heart than it is skill.
What sets Francois and his hockey league apart from most is their attitude. He professes, “If you love what you do, you’re going to be good at it.” Something we at WU! Manila love hearing. So, if you’re interested in joining the Hockey team, give him a call and he will welcome you with open gloves.
START HERE: WANT TO JOIN THE HOCKEY LEAGUE? GO TO THE ICE RINK ON THE FIRST FLOOR OF MALL OF ASIA
The game works like hockey, but no ice, no hitting your opponents and your stick is only about a foot long. Twelve players scramble along the bottom of the pool sliding a 3 pound puck towards a 9 foot long metal goal. The goals are unattened and there is only 2 fifteen minute rounds to score as many points as possible. Oh, and did I mention that this takes place underwater? Seriously.
The Underwater Hockey Confederation offers trials and classes at the Manila Polo Club. The team has seen
players from ages 11 all the way to 70 because it’s not a contact sport.
After sitting with Joel and Naj from the Underwater Hockey Confederation, we learned that this infant sport is starting to take off and is even being proposed as an Olympic category. If you’re ready to dive in and test your lungs, schedule for an Intro Session -- Mondays & Wednesdays (8-10pm) at the Manila Polo Club, McKinley Road, Makati City.START HERE- UNDERWATER HOCKEY-CALL OR SEND AN SMS MESSAGE TO 0932-8904425 or 0922-8824274.

Look good. Feel Great. In this section we take you through the activities that improve your body and mind.
WU! FRESH & FIT
Ever want to be the one who just picks things up with ease? What would you give to be that? Can it be taught or even bought? To advance at whatever I put my mind to, I used a few rules and a healthy dosage of O.C.D.
My Comfort ZoneWhatever I am doing, I try to remove my fears as soon as possible. From the pros to the newbies, we all crash a lot. But it’s only water, so it’s not that bad. The winning strategy for the wake park. is: Try new things, crash and, repeat.
The BasicsThe beginners area at the wake park is so gentle and forgiving that even my 50+ year old uncle was able to ride.
Ron’s tip: Don’t lean back on the rope. Bend your knees to keep the center of gravity low to increase balance.
Expert AdviceDay in and day out, the staff and riders waiting in line at the wake park get free passes to the greatest face plant show on earth. If you ask any of them for advice, they’ll help you out gladly. They’ve made the same mistakes and it’s always great to see others improve.
So call up your buddy right now and plan your trip. Don’t put things off. When riding, as soon as I learned a new skill, I forced myself to try something new. Never get comfortable!
Jack-ness: take 10 trips to the park 2 hours each time and talk with the operators, pros like Ellie from Republic or other helpful riders like Jobel and Erwin who are always there.

COOL POOLS
Manos Nail Lounge is located on the second floor of Crescent Park Residences in Burgos Circle. Their goal: To pamper the
women in Manila with quality
service and a refrigerator full of
drinks.
Choose between any four of their spa treatments (signature, awakening, pampering and energizing) and tilt your head back and relax in this bubble of cool serenity. Their peppermint and coffee scrub was amazing! If you’re in the mood for
some booze, they have a great selection of wines and cocktails, but if going the sober route, try their Bayani Brew, a locally brewed, not super sweet iced tea. My nail technicians were Leah B. and Mesil and I would highly recommend them. I tried the awakening mani-pedi for 800 php and it was indeed rejuvenating.

I wanted to try something cool to welcome the approaching summer, something I never had before. So, I tried Vajazzle.
I never knew this until I had it the other day at Barenaked
Spa (the only sugaring spa in Manila & the only one to offer Vajazzle too!). All the staff were quite nice and made everything really easy. At first I thought that I would be pierced or it will be itchy or painful, but it was not.
Let’s get to know more about Vajazzle.
Its a body art in which crystals are used to decorate your body, usually the private area by waxing it first. It gained popularity during 2010 when Jeniffer Love Hewitt mentioned it on US TV. She had been vajazzled after an awful breakup and never felt awful afterwards.
Just like JLH, let’s celebrate our body and on being a woman. Dazzle under the summer sun!

Does yoga do your body good but a bit too slow? Do you like to dance, but need to work on flexibility? Do you feel like there is a Beyonce in you that needs to shine? Have you ever loved the songs from Sir Mix-A-Lot? If so, you are in luck because BUTI YOGA just came to Manila.
For those that have never heard of Buti Yoga, it is a new type of yoga from Miami, making its way through the States and is finally giving our little city
a try. Buti Yoga is a mix of yoga poses, tribal dance, and hip hop. Set to dance beats and music to shake yo thang, Buti Yoga improves the body both physically and mentally. Some may shy from the first class when they see pelvic gyrating, hip thrusts, and bootie shaking, but the beauty of buti is that the nervousness quickly becomes a rush of confidence.
Those that push through with Buti Yoga finds that their confidence is worked
out as well as their obliques. This comes from the yoga idea of chakras, the seventh chakra of confidence and pleasure being activated while performing the poses and dance moves.
The leader in the Manila Buti Yoga craze is Cassie Yang. Trained in San Francisco, Cassie was intrigued by this energy-pounding type of yoga fitness. Her vision is to share this freeing exercise to Manila and seeing women feel confident about their bodies through Buti Yoga.
Perhaps in some time, we can see everyone's belief in the power of the Buti.START HERE- BUTI YOGA CLASSES- WE’LL INFORM YOU OF THE CLASSES YOU CAN ATTEND IN THE NEXT ISSUE!

THAI HERBAL BALL MASSAGERelaxation in the Midst of Chaos
Thai massage has been
one of the reasons to visit
Southeast Asia because of its
calming and relaxing nature
with an inexpensive price. Luckily, Philippines does Thai Massage about as well as they do in Thailand. While many massages have similar strokes and techniques, the Royal Thai Massage comes with a unique addition called “Thai Herbal Ball.” This large muslin sachet is filled with various herbs, rolls to the size of a tennis ball, and is steamed. The moisture opens up the dried herbs of ginger, tamarind, lemongrass, mangosteen, and many other herbs that relaxes the body with scent and heat. Used after an oil massage, the herbal ball is patted on or massaged into the sore muscles of a person’s back.
Like Ventosa, also known as “cupping,” the herbal ball increases circulation, promotes relaxed muscles, and improves skin conditions, without the black and blue reminder of your treatment. Mixed with an hour of the Thai massage, this treatment is for 90 minutes and valued at 800 pesos, a great deal for the service.
The best part is that it can be found in one of the most stressful places. On the sixth floor of the 168 Mall in Divisoria, Suay Thai provides a wonderful retreat in the middle of bargain shopping.
A good deal is easy to find in Divisoria with a little persistence. Lucky for all of our readers, we have already persisted for you. Enjoy a

enthusiast so right away Ace caught my attention. This place has a variety of pools and hydro massage services to choose from. Modern living makes it much easier to become obese because of all the technological advances that reduce the amount of physical activities people normally undergo daily, in contrast to their ancestors who were not as likely to be overweight.
Most affluent countries have been experimenting with the “low-fat” diet schemes for over 30 years with a net increase of 300% obesity and Diabetes II. The food and drug industries have been the main culprits in pushing lifestyles toward obesity.
1st there is the “promise” that drugs will cure all diseases so why bother trying to fix your faulty lifestyle. 2nd there are all the cute and trendy food sales marketing promotions for “low fat” types of products.
Both industries are there to make a profit without obligation and responsibility of the outcomes they have created. But we can’t just go around placing the blame on industries seeking a profit... the consumers have also taken the path of least resistance.
“Things are the way they are because of the way things are.” Until things change... nothing will change. What are the changes that need to be made? I don’t have to spell it out because that information is already out there. Do your homework!
In a nutshell we have to simply take greater responsibility for our health by re-thinking our basic philosophies of life, of health and following through on that new perspective. Some things you will need to stop doing and other things you will need to start doing. It’s not rocket science!
You will be receiving important information in a following article on Diabetes and Insulin Resistance. Be sure you read it to help re-shape your personal philosophy of health. To your health!

If it’s hot outside and you love ramen, then I have a story to tell you. For two glorious years I lived in a small town in Japan and like Manila, the humidity and heat could be pretty brutal. On a hot summer day, I stumbled into my favorite ramen shop and was offered a colder, lighter version of my miso-ramen and ever since Hiyashi Chuka (literally translated to Cold Chinese) has been my best summer
time lunch buddy. So you can imagine my delight when we were reunited in Makati Ave and they didn’t disappoint. I went with the large bowl and devoured it as if it were my last meal.

Posh, beautiful, borderline expensive. These are but some words I’d describe as “Cool Guy” Places. Resturaunts that you would like to be seen in or you would want to take your awesome girlfriend to. That’s
what I’m talking about.
Now, I know we’re aiming for posh, But with the milk tea and burger combo, who could you not call that cool? Now, I was honestly skeptical of this burger because i didn’t think a milk tea shop could serve a good burger (290 Php). To my surprise (A BIG surprise) I found it to be really great! The bun was toasted to perfection, and the meat didn’t lack flavor. A well balanced burger with the milk tea I was drinking was simply divine! Brew-kus had really impressed me and I recommend the milk tea and burger combo! Mr. Rockefellers boasts their own spin on the American cheeseburger. The Rockefeller Cheeseburger. This morsel of goodness (295 Php) is comprised of 4 basic ingredients. Spinach, cheese, meat, and bun. The Verdict? Mucho tasty! The bed of Spinach really made this burger unique in the sense that you could taste it but it didn’t overpower the flavor of the meat. The cheese was melted into a gooey mass while the meat did it’s job by being moist and flavorful. Do yourself a favor and try this burger. It’s heavenly. START HERE: MR. At first glance you wouldn’t think a high class restaurant like Felix would have a burger. But if you do you’ll find in their menu The CY Royal, a delicious burger that although sports a hefty price (750 Php) makes up with it’s deliciousness. The thing that stood out in this burger was it’s Juiciness. You could tell that the cooks spent time to craft this burger to perfection. If you got the cash, treat yourself to the CY Royal. VERY ICED TEA
Da.U.De has been dazzling new tea-appreciators with a very large array of teas. Owner Renée Sebastian has awaken new flavors as she has blended new teas, created tea-infused cakes and pho broth and now she has leapt into a new chilly world of tea... Ice cream. Next time you pop inside the shop on a hot summer day, choose the Hexie #2; a dark chocolate flavor mixed with the mellow and brisk taste of Hexie Tea. This is a type of green tea from the Hunnan province of China. If a big pot of hot tea doesn’t seem like your cool down option, try a scoop of tea instead. OUR HOME IN
CLARK
WIDUS RESORTLocated right near an American Air
force base, Clark was meant to be a place with it’s sole purpose of being a positive influence on the American soldiers who stay in the Philippines. Being that, Clark is a family friendly place that boasts a fine display of humble quality shops, a safe atmosphere, and comfor table living.
We made our home that weekend at Widus Resort and Casino and were so impressed with what we found. Never has staff been so warm and attentive. Their newly renovated restaurant, Salt, had a wonderful breakfast freshly cooked in their open kitchen. Their pool outside had a waterslide and a bar in the pool, perfect for our crazy antics. The casino
was filled with happy visitors and their convention center was breathtaking. The goodies in Widus didn’t seem to stop there since plans are to increase the number of hotel rooms with a new tower and create an outdoor area for events and weddings.
Widus Resort is found in the northern part of Clark, on the main road of Manuel A. Roxas Highway. It’s conveniently located next to Mimosa Resort, an area with a collection of restaurants, bars, and friendly people that also made our stay enjoyable. Farther north from Widus is Nayong Filipino, Clark Racetrack, and Paradise Ranch.

DAY 2Day Two started as Day One, enjoying the buffet. This time I went for Asian specific choices, having Korean pickles and noodles to fill myself up. Then off we went to Deca Wake Park, a circular lake that had long cables for wakeboarders and knee bor-ders to enjoy. The sun was hot, making a nice burn for myself..
Four hours of enjoyment and back we went to have lunch at Yatz, a steakhouse with a large selection of wine, supplied by the Yatz Wine shop down the road. In the same area, We found a cute cafe/massage shop called Kouzi Cafe. Jason Kim has a wonderful staff that did the best massage I ever had with a coffee for after. Dinner was on the go to make our way back to Manila, but seeing that it only took and hour and a half to get there, it would have been a better idea to stay and enjoy Clark for a longer time.
DAY 1After waking up from the queen size bed, we made our way down to Widus Resort’s Salt Restaurant., where they served a breakfast buffet of Asian and European choices from 6 to 10 a.m. Getting up at 9:00 a.m. was no longer a problem. Once filled and satisfied, we took a ten minute drive to Nayong Filiino, a miniature version of the cultural wonders in the Philippines.
We had a delicious Japanese lunch in Zen, enjoying their fried noodles, beef bowls, and Dragon Rolls. We then drove to Paradise Ranch, a wonderland of animals, a zipline, and random sculptures. This area is a conservation center who employs PhilAms from the Pampanga area. We watched the sun go down from our panoramic view and headed down the hill to enjoy dinner at Salt and drifted the rest of the night in Prism, Widus’s lounge, enjoying the live band that played.

RAW FOOD COURSEThis class Provides information on how to cook your favorite raw veggies into fabulous dishes.
Aileen Gloria de Guzman has been the leading expert in the Philippines with her knowledge of raw food, healthy living, and general know-how on wellness. She has practiced a diet of raw food and additional supplements for many years, giving her the energy and radiance of someone much younger than her age. In the past, she had suffered from some ailments and health problems and found raw food as a solution to her issues. Since then, she has been promoting the lifestyle of healthy eating in Philippines, not an easy task given the traditional diet of meat, sauces, and rice.
However, Manila is evolving to become a very health conscious city. Now more than ever, gyms are gaining more and more popularity and markets are growing their choices of organic produce. It’s a wonderful time for the knowledge gained by Aileen to be shared with all of Manila.Recently, Aileen and Sugarleaf Cafe have star ted a series of seminars
promoting the raw lifestyle. It is the healthiest cooking class you can find and the dishes that come out are incredible. Aileen strives to show that raw food does not only limit ourselves to smoothies and salads.
While cooking the dishes, Aileen is very specific about the vitamins contained in her ingredients and how to get the most out of what we consume. All that is on her cooking table is her high speed blender, Matstone Low Speed Juicer, and A LOT of produce. Through the three hours, Aileen chops and peels through the fruits and vegetables and creates masterpieces of a complete meal. From breakfast to dessert, The tastes are incredible as Aileen uses herbs and spices to perk up dressings. Included in each meal are small secrets that powers up the meal. For example, chia seeds in the smoothie, chlorella powder in the cilantro dressing, and holy basil in the noodles. Aileen’s seminars are meant to take the fear out
of the raw food movement and educate everyone on how to enjoy their next healthy meal. The series are individual, so it is not meant to be followed with the others to make sense. If interested in joining the seminar in May 25 refer to
angelo@sugar leafph.com to sign up for the next class and begin living the healthy life.

REVIEW:MANILAFASHIONOBSERVER.COM
As her profile states, Christine Dychiao gets all sorts of ideas and thought in her head all the time and she shares them with her readers.
Since we decided to go with a “stay cool” theme for our summer issue, who better to follow than a fashion blogger. Ask anyone who knows me and you’ll find out quick that I am fashion illiterate. So this blogger stocker was a personal challenge for me, but after scowering the blogosphere I found Manilafashionobserver.com.
With little to no interest in fashion, I found myself trolling through this blog like a raccoon in a trashcan. Meaning, I loved it. It didn’t overload me with a million pictures of clothes, up close shots of shinny dangly things or out of this world prints made to stay on the runway. Instead, I found the almost daydream like thoughts of a girl whose found some cool shop, great concepts and some contests worth taking part in.
I guess I would have to say that this blog isn’t the scary abstract fashion world I thought I would have to write about, its the practical world that even this jeans and a t-shirt guy could get interested in. I even made my way to Super Dry T- Shirt Shop and got an awesome shirt out of it.

Every night Manila is alive with live music - from electronica to indie to pop to rock to you on the videoke! There are a ton of places to find out about cover bands, but only one space with a comprehensive list of the best local artists - signed and unsigned. It’s called Pindiemusic.com and it serves up the most comprehensive live music listings in the Metro, plus detailed profiles on all the bands you are likely to see, the venues you’ll need to visit, the backstage talent, and the neighbourhoods you’ll uncover along the way. Not only is it easy to navigate on your phone or computer, but It’s got great eye candy and smarts too, with video, photography and deep conversations with the music heroes that rock our nights out.
For OPM fans and newcomers to the local music scene, if it’s not on Pindiemusic.com/, it probably isn’t happening.
Just like the WU! Team, Carlos Garchitorena is constantly prowling the local scene to see whats going on and sharing it on heygarch.com.
The great thing about Carlos “Garch” is that he’s been using connections to local artists and his passion for the local music scene to host lively proformances all around the manila area.. Heygarch.com is set up much like a blog that showcases all the spots that Carlos wants to share to fellow music lovers.
The Guy Who Loves The Manila Indie Scene. A site dedicated to finding all the sensational bands playing.

“This is a rock concert, you don’t need to sit down, come on up to the front” – so said Franco, the opening cry this April for the packed our Music Museum (Greenhills) to rise up and rock on. And why not? The sound was imposing, the stage was stroboscopic with multi-colored lights and smoke and a massive video backdrop; and Franco is just too f***** cool, striding on stage with his guitar slung over his shoulder, a cool beach cowboy in a freshly-laundered white tee, and that big wide smile...”
Franco on local music: “I really wish that there would be more people who would write their own stuff instead of singing revival stuff. Some artists can do it and revive it and do a really good revival, or after a couple of years, and then some [other] artist would do it. What the f*** is wrong with you guys? It’s really sad, though. Because there are so many Filipino musicians out there who can really write, but record labels would much rather get a pretty face and have them do a revival, and then some months later, it’s multi platinum. What the f***. It’s really insulting.”

Stay Cool WU! Manila I 38
In my opinion, the aerobatic possibilities being demonstrated by the newest surfing superstars of today is absolutely mind blowing! Water and air maneuvers never thought possible during my surfing days nor words could describe the amazing feats in, over or under the breakers being accomplished today.
Some observers might state it’s because of the technological advancement in the surfboards, newer and better equipment. But a more important human affect can be said to have contributed to the great changes over the years, the evolution of wave sciences and the creative mind of the surfer. Other changes can also be found in the language that wave maneuvers are spoken. Surf terms such as get radical, rip and slash, getting air, are the now in-terms giving the sport it’s new identity awareness and public excitement.
Surfers of my generation shared the same set of terms to describe the wave vehicles we rode on those same waves many years ago. Such terms as the nose, tail, kick, deck, fin, taper and so on are still universally accepted today. And yet there were other words that spoke of the actual experience on the wave itself. This is where the biggest differences of the old and new surf generation can be heard.
The ride always
ended in either
a kick-out or a
wipe-out. Either
way, the ride was
always considered
“bitch-en”!
The most creative terms were the ones given to the actual wave ride so that a surfer could describe to his surf buddies the exact feelings he felt at certain specific locations on the face of the wave. Word like take-off, drop-in, bottom-turn, kick-back, tubed, and of course the most famous term that surfing founded, the wipe-out. The ride always ended in either a kick-out or a wipe-out. Either way, the ride was always considered “bitch-en”!
Don’t let the visions of the new wave riding styles scare you from experiencing one of the best water
sport and cultures ever invented. Try it before it’s to late, it’ll be an unforgettable memory of moments you will ever have and it may perhaps turn into another life addictions. You
are now a surfer, welcome to the club!
My suggestion is to enter the sport on a longish surfboard, maybe about 9 feet. Find your body-balance point were your
boards nose is about 2 inches off the water ; paddle straight out to meet the approaching swells; sink the tail, turn your board towards the beach and stroke with all your heart...stroke, stroke, stroke and take-off. Jump to your feet quickly in one continuous movement, take the drop, make that bottom turn, set your rail and go for it...and get tubed dude. You just might come out on the other side totally stoked.
