INTRODUCTION TO THE DEPARTMENT OF EDUCATION
The Department of Education, University of Peradeniya had a long and remarkable
history. In 1949 the Department of Education of University of Ceylon was established in
Colombo. It was shifted to the new University campus at Peradeniya in 1957.
The main objective of the Department was to provide a professional training to the
graduate teachers of secondary schools in Sri Lanka. In order to achieve this objective a
one year full time Postgraduate Diploma in Education was awarded.
The Bachelor of Education Course (B.Ed) was commenced in 1965 for introducing
education as a subject discipline offered at the degree level.
With the rationalization of courses in universities under the Jayaratna Committee
Recommendations a Faculty of Education was established in the University of Colombo in
1975 amalgamating the resource of the Departments of Education at Peradeniya,
Vidyodaya and Vidyalankara Universities. Thus the Department of Education at
Peradeniya ceased to function in 1975.
With the implementation of the Universities Act NO.16 of 1978 and the restoration of the
autonomy of universities, the Department of Education was re‐established at the
University of Peradeniya in 1979. In 1985 the government decided not to grant full pay
study leave for the teachers to follow the Postgraduate Diploma in Education. This
provided an opportunity for the Department to introduce self financed courses at the
postgraduate level. In 1992 the Ministry of Education reverted back to the earlier policy of
granting paid study leave to teachers, to follow the Postgraduate Diploma in Education
Course.
At present (2014) the department offers six postgraduate programmes and Optional for
undergraduate.
1. Postgraduate Diploma in Education (Fulltime) The candidates are selected by the Ministry of Education and they are sent to the Department as full time students on full pay study leave for one year.
2. Postgraduate Diploma in Education (Weekend)
The students are selected by the Department of Education through a competitive examination and an interview. The duration of the course is 18 calendar months.
Master of Education 2014/2015 Page 11
3. Postgraduate Diploma in Physical Education (Part time)
The graduates attending physical education related activities in their institutions are selected by the Department of Education, University of Peradeniya after a written and practical examination. The duration of the course is 18 months. The course is conducted during weekends.
4. Master of Education Program
This is a one year full time programme. Those students who obtain a merit or a distinction at the Postgraduate Diploma in Education or a BEd degree with a class from a recognized university are eligible to apply for this course. The candidates are selected through an examination followed by an interview. The students who follow this course should obtain full‐time study leave for one year. The selection criteria may vary according to the demand.
5. Master of Philosophy in Education Program
This is a two year full time programme. Those who complete the M. Ed. degree course successfully with an average of 65% or above are eligible to register for this course. The students who follow this course if employed should obtain full‐time study leave for two years.
6. Ph. D in Education Program
Those who complete the two year M. Phil Degree programme successfully are eligible to register for this course. The Ph. D. degree programme is available only by research. The candidates should prepare the synopsis of the proposed study and obtain the approval of the Department of Education and the Higher Degree Committee of the Faculty of Arts.
7. Optional Courses for Undergraduates. The department also offers seven optional courses on education at the 200,300 and 400 levels in undergraduate programme at the Faculty of Arts.
