Join Us at UICOMPFree Preview Screening and Walk ThroughThursday, March 26, 6-8 p.m.University of Illinois College of Medicine Peoria AuditoriumRSVP required as seating is limited, wtvp.org
Get a sneak peek at clips from Cancer: The Emperor of All Maladies and WTVP’s local companion programs and take a walk through of the UICOMP Cancer Research Center. Reservations are required as space is limited. Reserve your tickets online at wtvp.org.
The Story of CancerCancer: The Emperor of All Maladies is a three-part, six-hour major television event by Barak Goodman presented by preeminent documentary filmmaker Ken Burns. Based on the 2010 Pulitzer Prize-winning book The Emperor of All Maladies: A Biography of Cancer by Dr. Siddhartha Mukherjee, the series is the most comprehensive documentary on a single disease ever made.
Premiering over three nights, Monday, March 30-Wednesday, April 1 from 8-10 p.m. each night, this “biography” of cancer tells the comprehensive story of the disease, from its first description in an ancient Egyptian scroll to the gleaming laboratories of modern research institutions. The film interweaves a sweeping historical narra-tive with intimate stories about contemporary patients, and an inves-tigation into the latest scientific breakthroughs that may have brought us, at long last, within sight of lasting cures and an era in which cancer may become a chronic or curable illness rather than its historic death sentence in some forms. The series matches the epic scale of the dis-ease, reshaping the way the public sees cancer and stripping away some of the fear and misunderstanding that has long surrounded it.
The project includes a robust website — www.TheStoryofCancer.org — and social and digital media components. While the site will contain vast amounts of useful information, it will not be primar-ily a medical resource. Instead, it will engage people on the level of personal narrative.
To showcase the amazing advances in cancer research and treatment being made right here in central Illinois, WTVP and WILL are teaming up to produce a local multi-platform companion to the national broadcast. This joint initiative will include two half-hour mini-documentaries produced by WTVP, one on the medical research underway at University of Illinois and one on the latest in treatment and care in greater Peoria. And WILL will contribute a studio-based half-hour community talk back with area medical leaders. The specials will air Thursday, April 2 starting at 8 p.m. The project will also include a series of community screenings, radio segments for Illinois Public Radio, and online resources.

March Madness? March Membership! Our membership drives are still a major source of funding for WTVP, and it’s a time we can showcase nostalgic music and interesting programming outside of our regular series – favorites like Celtic Woman, Suze Orman, Daniel O’Donnell and Peter, Paul and Mary, for instance. We have all those and more this March! Highlights include:Celebrate 10 years of Celtic Woman with Celtic Woman Fan Favorites. Relive the mesmerizing voices and dazzling dances from the original group to more recent performances at magical venues like the iconic Slane castle in County Meath, Ireland.
John Denver fans will want to tune in for a new landmark docu-mentary that explores the private life and public legacy of America’s Everyman. John Denver: Country Boy is an intimate profile that marks what would have been the singer’s 70th birthday. The perfor-mance documentary includes interviews with Denver’s former wives and managers to his son and brother.
Relive Broadway’s golden age with Great Broadway Musical Mo-ments from the Ed Sullivan Show, a compilation of performances from the late 40s to the early 50s, many of them not seen since their original broadcast. Legends like Ethel Merman, Julie Andrews, Richard Burton and Dick Van Dyke, to name a few, are featured.
In Classic Hollywood Musicals, we journey through the golden age of movies through five classics. See Gene Kelly in Singin’ in the Rain and Elvis and Ann-Margret in Viva Las Vegas. That’s just a taste of some of the most iconic images ever recorded on film that you will see.
Not everything this March is from the past. Transatlantic Sessions features living legends like Alison Krauss, Mary Chapin Carpenter, Bela Fleck and James Taylor playing with Jerry Douglas, a dobro master from Nashville, and Aly Bain, a Shetland fiddle virtuoso, at various memorable places in Scotland.
Shot before a live audience at the historic Grand Opera House in Belfast, The Music of Northern Ireland stars pop tenor Eamonn McCrystal and guests and celebrates a feast of music and artists all originating from Northern Ireland – ev-erything from Danny Boy to Moondance by Van Morrison.
If you don’t find music to delight you, you haven’t tuned in to WTVP’s Merry March Madness. Please check the listings pages for dates and times.
Schedules subject to change during membership drive. For the latest updates please see wtvp.org, Facebook and Twitter

Notes from the President & CEOStaying relevantWe’re moving forward with new local content, this time centered on the upcoming three-part PBS series, Cancer: The Emperor of All Maladies that debuts Monday, March 30. We’re partnering with WILL in Urbana to detail the latest advances in cancer research, treatment and care in our region, including the groundbreaking work taking place at OSF, the University of Illinois and throughout the local medical community. We hope you can join us for a preview of both the national and local efforts as we partner with the University of Illinois College of Medicine Peoria (UICOMP) on March 26 for a free sneak peek at the programs and a walk through of the Cancer Research Center. The event will also be an opportunity to meet Dr. Marcelo B. Soares, world renowned cancer geneticist and newly appointed Senior Associate Dean for Research at UICOMP. See page 2 for more about these efforts, and keep close to us on the Web and social media for specific program dates and details not available at press time.
Thank you for your support of public media. It’s an important investment in our communities and in keeping us connected.

For decades now, our family has enjoyed the high-quality programming available to us on WTVP. As our children were growing up, programs such as Sesame Street provided some great learning op-portunities for them. And now, the next generation of our family continues to benefit from the many quality programs available.
Our love of WTVP started at the original studio and offices on the Bradley campus to the current station location on Peoria’s riverfront, which is the largest studio in Illinois outside of Chicago. We remember analog television, but we were also there when WTVP became the first PBS affiliate to switch to digital broadcasting in 2002. The digital world has opened up the opportunity to now have a choice of three channels – the original station, World, and Create – which greatly expands the opportunity to view entertaining and educational programs of interest.
There is also something special about being able to volunteer at WTVP. Every year, our entire family becomes part of the station’s “Auction family.” The auction is just one way that WTVP raises needed funds, but it may be the most fun.
As members of WTVP’s Klystron Society, we are committed to supporting the long-term excellence and impact of public media in Central Illinois. We also take advantage of the Caterpillar Match-ing gift program so our gift to the station is doubled.
We invite you to consider joining the Klystron Society or volunteering your time for support of the station.
Lee and Beth Maki, Washington IL

180 Days180 Days: Hartsville, the award-winning PBS series, spent a year in two elementary schools in Hartsville, one, the lowest performing and one, the most rapidly improving, letting teachers, principals, district administrators, community leaders and families tell their own stories. From a single mom working two low wage jobs with high aspirations for her three young sons to a veteran principal who was the first in her family to go to college, their stories give viewers intimate access to just what it takes to give even the most vulnerable members of our society, poor kids, a chance at the American Dream.
Is Hartsville an anomaly, or does its successes point towards some universally applicable solutions? Can education and community leadership really change the for-tunes of a generation by not letting its youngest children fall through the cracks? This two-part film airs Tuesday, Mar. 17 from 7-8 and 8-9 p.m.
Connect with 180 Days: Hartsville online through their extensive Community Engagement and So-cial Media Campaign. The series is also part of the ongoing American Graduate Initiative. The series is produced by South Carolina ETV and the National Black Program-ming Consortia.

Expecting DramaNuns, nurses, shopping and a look ahead at more to come… Save your Sundays for a pleasantly dramatic end to your weekend.
PBS Drama Preview, premiering Mar. 22 at 7 p.m., is what we hope is the first in a set of recurring previews that get viewers excited about upcoming PBS and Mas-terpiece drama priorities coming down the pike.
Call the Midwife returns for a fourth season beginning Sunday, Mar. 29 at 7 p.m. Inspired by the memoirs of Jennifer Worth, this charming series follows the nurses, midwives and nuns from Nonnatus House, who visit the expectant mothers of Poplar, providing the poorest women with the best possible care. In Season 4, the community prepares to enter a new decade — the 1960s.
Mr. Selfridge is back for a third season on Masterpiece beginning Sunday Mar. 29 at 8 p.m. with a two-hour premiere. Jeremy Piven returns as the flamboyant Ameri-can entrepreneur who founded the famous Selfridge’s department store as the story picks up in 1919. The acclaimed cast also includes Aisling Loftus, Katherine Kelly, Gregory Fitoussi, Amanda Ab-bington and Tom Goodman-Hill. Remind yourself where the series left off with an encore of the final episode of Season 2 on Sunday, Mar. 22 from 8-10 p.m.

Medical MarvelsStep inside the groundbreaking medical frontier that is fetal surgery with Twice Born – Stories from the Special Delivery Unit. Airing Tuesdays, March 31-April 14 at 7 p.m., this gripping three-part series takes an intimate, inside look at rare surgeries done on babies still inside their mothers’ wombs.
With exclusive access to the elite Center for Fetal Diagnosis and Treatment at Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP) and its Special Delivery Unit, you’ll experience rarely seen, real-time footage of operations on the fetus. Gain insight into the lives of an unusual team of doctors who have defied skeptics and chosen to pursue this high-risk, high-reward career path. The featured parents all face a gut-wrenching decision: should they take a leap of faith to repair birth defects with risky pre-natal surgery, even if it means they might lose their child?
Twice Born serves up non-stop drama with high stakes stories and uncertain outcomes. A perfect blend of narrative and fact, the series will engage, inform and astonish.
Rated TV-14. Contains images of surgical procedures. Viewer discre-tion is advised.
