This month, the Queensland divisionbrings

members a technical update on the subject of‘HowtoPicktheRightShieldingGas’.

Shieldinggascanmakeabigimpact in the transfer of heat, alloycontent, fumegenerationandshapetoyourfinishedweld.Becausethereisnooneshieldinggasthatfitsallapplications, the choice needs tobetailoredtothespecificsofeachjob. However, thereareafewgeneralrulesandprovisosthat can be followed for all typesofwelding.

THE BASICS OF SHIELDING GASES

Beforewegetstarted,therearethreethingstokeepmindaboutthewaythatshieldinggaseswork.Thesimplepropertiesofthesegasesthatwillinfluenceyourweldare:• The thermal properties

ofyourgasathightemperatures

• The chemical reaction eachgaswillhavewiththematerialsinyourweldingplate and wire

• Howeachgaswillaffectthemethod of transfer between metals

KNOW YOUR OBJECTIVE

Toselectbestgas,youshouldknowwhatyourfinishedweldrequirementsare.Askyourself:• Whatkindofmaterialmust

be joined?• How important is weld

appearance?• Is spatter a concern?• Is productivity improvement

a prime interest?• Is deep penetration required,

or should penetration be minimisedtoreduceburn-throughinthejoint?

• Is it important to reduce weldingfumes?

• Keep these questions in mind as you address how tochoosethebestshieldinggasforyourapplication.

WHAT TO CHOOSE & WHEN

Threepuregasesarethefoundationforshieldingarcwelding:argon,helium,andcarbondioxide.Othergasessuchasoxygen,nitrogen,andhydrogenmaybeaddedtomodify arc characteristics, the moltenweldpool,ortheweld.Tailoringtheblendcompositionhelpsmeetjobrequirements.

Argon:isapopularchoice,particularlyasitisasingle

atomgasthatisaffordable,hasnegligiblechemicalreactionsandleavesastrongweldwithnofumes.

Helium:iscommonlyusedinTIGweldingonnonferrousmaterials.Unlikeargon,heliumhasahighionizationpotentialandagreaterconductivity,offeringtheoppositeeffectsofweldingwithargon.Thiscangiveyoutroublewhenstrikinganarcifyouarenotusinghighfrequencyarcstarting.

Carbon Dioxide: due to its affordability, carbon dioxide is commonly used when materialcostsareahighpriority.Itprovidesadeepweldpenetrationmakingitusefulforweldingthickmaterial, butproduces a less stable arc and alotofspatter.

If clean up, weld quality, and appearance are important, amixtureof75%to95%Argon,and5%to25%carbondioxide will allow the use of the spray transfer process, which produceshigherproductivityrates, increases arc stability and puddle control, and reducesspatter.
