Introduction

About WTCI

The WTCI established itself as a member of the World Trade Centers Association, the world’s largest, private business network with over 750,000 affiliated companies representing virtually all industries, in 1987. Our goal is to help area businesses expand their operations by developing overseas; this goal is accomplished through international business forums, trade missions and access to timely trade information.

The World Trade Center Illinois is a leader for facilitating international trade in the Midwest. Our unparalleled global alliances, including a network to over 300 World Trade Centers in nearly 100 countries and our access to business and technological resources, commit us to act as the impetus for creating overseas business opportunities for the Midwest.

Economic Development

World Trade Center Illinois has exclusive rights to access to the nation’s most comprehensive databases. This makes us the number one trade related information source in the region. Our research team is able to prepare informational reports on virtually any product moving in or out of the US. These reports, prepared according to our members’ needs, include but are not limited to target destinations, annual and monthly movements in total dollar value as well as unit/air/vessel values, and percent growth changes. We also identify potential partners and prepare country specific or regional “how to” business guides.

Why Illinois? Illinois’ Economy

Illinois boasts a first-class and highly diverse economy that possesses a varied and well-trained workforce ranking among the most productive in the country. Because of its central location, excellent transportation infrastructure, and world-class educational institutions, the Illinois economy is healthy and vibrant with a wide range of successful industries.

Illinois has long been aware of the significance of international trade, continually expanding its breadth and depth in promoting and expanding international trade. The state currently ranks sixth in the nation for exports, with more than 60 percent Illinois exports in the high-tech sector. It also reaped huge benefits from NAFTA with a 70.6 percent increase in trade with Canada and Mexico.

In Illinois, food manufacturing, with an annual value added by manufacturing of $14.0 billion, is the leading industry. Nationally, Illinois ranks among the leading states in the number of food and agricultural processing companies, including ethanol production, meat packing, soybean processing, dairy manufacturing, corn processing, feed milling, vegetable processing and many others. Chemicals is second with value added of $12.7 billion. Non-electrical machinery, particularly construction, farming, and metalworking machinery, is third with an annual value added of $11.6 billion.

The next largest manufacturing industries in Illinois are fabricated metal products ($10.3 billion), computer and electronic products ($7.1billion), plastics and rubber products ($6.6 billion), and transportation equipment ($5.9 billion).

Why Chicago? Targeted Sectors in Chicagoland

Chicago is ranked number 1 in manufacturing translating to $72.4 billion manufacturing output. Among many, high technology, heavy and light machinery, information and communication technologies, food and food processing including machinery for food processing, nanotechnology and biotech are leading industries. The Chicago area has 639,500 manufacturing workers (400000 precision production workers) with the largest manufacturing GRP in the nation ($60 billion).

Chicago is North America’s telecommunications hub. It has the largest commercial Internet exchange point by volume and is the only cooperative interconnection point for international advanced networks (STAR TAP) in the world. There are 97,000 information technology workers in the region and the largest concentration of computer programmers and software engineers (45,350) in the U.S. (235% more than Silicon Valley). Seven of the top 34 digital consulting houses are headquartered in the Chicago area.

Chicago is an international leader in the trading of commodities, stock options, currency, and interest rate futures, with 150000 direct and indirect jobs or 64% of total U.S. industry employment. 29 of the Fortune 500 and 84 publicly-traded companies are headquartered here.

The Chicago area, where 3.3 percent of all U.S. retail sales are made, is ranked third among metropolitan statistical areas in this category. Approximately 12.8 percent of all U.S. retail sales are made in Illinois and its neighboring states.

The competitive strategy of global emergence through economic diversification and social diversity made Chicago’s economy one of the world's largest and most diversified with a Gross Regional Product of more than $423 billion growing by nearly $18 billion in the years 2003-2005.

Chicago (relative to the rest of the U.S.) is:

• #1 in high--technology employment -- $35 billion regional high-tech output and over 7,100 companies

• #1 distribution center -- #1 truck, #1 intermodal, #1 rail, #1 air

• #1 in business services professionals

• #1 in manufacturing - $72.4 billion regional manufacturing output

• #1 data transmission by volume -- 10 terabytes/day

• #1 urban medical district

In addition to its leadership in manufacturing Chicago also offers a lot with its location. 50% of North American industry is within one day truck delivery and 75% of North America's consumers are less than two days away. Chicago is also the leading intermodal container handler in the Western Hemisphere, with more than twice the volume of Los Angeles and more than five times that of New York.
