A Tarneit woman is thanking her lucky stars she was not in bed early last Sunday morning after a car smashed into the bedroom of her house.
Wyndham North police sergeant Steve Taylor said a 25-year-old Tarneit woman lost control of her car in Wilandra Drive and ploughed through the front of the brick house soon after 6.45am.
Sergeant Taylor said it was fortunate nobody was in the house at the time.
The occupant of the house was at work when it happened, he said.
Its extremely lucky she wasnt inside at the time because the car landed inside her bedroom on top of the bed.
Had she been inside the bedroom, we would have been talking about either a miracle survival or she would be dead.
The driver was trapped in her car, with CFA and SES crews called to the scene to assist with the rescue.
She was eventually taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries and is assisting police with their inquiries.

Crash car lands in empty bed

Little River parents are hoping the federal government will overturn its decision to stop funding an out-of-hours care program at the towns primary school.
As reported by Star Weekly, the school has been told that funding for its out-of-hours care program will cease early next year because 2011 census data showed the town was in a major city (Geelong).
The town has previously been classified as inner regional, allowing the school to access $16,000 in funding.
The before-and-after school care service is used by 39 of the schools 77 families.
The school fears that without federal funding, the program will close, leaving 57 children without care.
Concerned parents met Lalor MP Joanne Ryan and opposition assistant education spokeswoman Amanda Rishworth last Friday to air their concerns.
Ms Ryan said the government had the ability to waive the criteria that led to the funding cancellation, allowing the care program to continue.
She said many of the parents worked in Melbourne or Geelong and relied on the program to provide their children with a safe place to go before or after school.
Without it, some parents would be forced to send their children to schools in Wyndham or Geelong, Ms Ryan said.
If 10 children were to leave the school, a teacher could be out of a job.
Ms Ryan said a petition calling for the decision to be reversed had 650 signatures and would be tabled in Parliament.
Ms Rishworth said she would raise the issue with Assistant Education Minister Sussan Ley.

Anyone who drives out [to Little River] can see that its not a major city and that there are no other options for parents, she said.
For some families, losing the program will be the difference between parents studying or looking after their children, or going back to work or not. While the program was assisting families it was also keeping kids safe.
The Education Department said it had used census data to review all childcare services receiving community support program funding and found Little River Primary School was no longer eligible under the funding guidelines.
The department said funding would continue until early February.

Prominent Melbourne imam Sheikh Issa Musse wants to help the community learn more about the Muslims who call Wyndham home.
As imam at Hoppers Crossings Virgin Mary Mosque, Sheikh Issa believes it is important to challenge misconceptions about Islam and help people understand what happens at a mosque.
As such, the Werribee Islamic Centre (WIC) will open the mosque to the public on Saturday.
We all belong to this country. Given the current crisis, we think it is important to say to people, Dont target others. No matter what happens 20,000 or 30,000 miles away, we are all in one boat in this country, the sheikh said.
During the open day, there will be mosque tours with guides to answer peoples questions. There will also be a barbecue and childrens activities.
The Virgin Mary Mosque is one of only two mosques in Victoria taking part in the national open day. It is home to Victorias only multi-ethnic congregation, welcoming people from Africa, Pakistan, the Middle East, Morocco, Sri Lanka, Albania, India, Europe and Bangladesh.
WIC vice-president Rifai Raheem said the centre was honoured to welcome the community into its mosque, which has been at its Hogans Road site for about 10 years and has a growing congregation, now about 500 people.
This is a unique opportunity to celebrate diversity, Mr Raheem said. We want everyone to feel welcome to come to the mosque and ask questions. We understand this is a time when the community wants to know more about others.

Drivers and pedestrians are dicing with death at the Old Geelong Road level crossing, with six near-misses reported since May last year.
Yet neither Labor nor the Coalition has committed to removing the level crossings.
Labor has included the Werribee and Cherry streets crossings on its list of the 50 it has pledged to remove if it wins the state election.
The Coalition has not committed to removing any level crossings on the Werribee line, yet.
As part of Wyndham councils anti- congestion campaign, it has urged both parties to remove all level crossings across the city.
As reported by Star Weekly on October 15, Suzanne Cory High School teacher Nick Cummins said the school was concerned for the safety of 600 students who use the Old Geelong Road level crossing regularly. He described the crossing as an accident waiting to happen.
Mayor Bob Fairclough said removing the Old Geelong Road level crossing was a priority as it was already well beyond its capacity.
Tarneit MP and opposition treasury spokesman Tim Pallas said Labors priority list of dangerous level crossings was developed based on information from the RACV and the Australian Level Crossing Assessment Model.
Fatalities have occurred at both the Cherry and Werribee-Cottrell streets crossings, and they have been given priority, he said.
The most recent level crossing fatality in Wyndham was at Cherry Street in May 2012. However, figures from Transport Safety Victoria reveal there have been only two near- misses here involving a person or vehicle since May last year.
RACV roads and traffic manager Dave Jones said removing level crossings reduced the need for people to take unnecessary risks.
Parties mute on key crossing
Whenever theres a major emergency, such as an explosion, earthquake or landslide, the Australian Swiss Search Dogs Association is called on to help look for survivors.
Dogs and their handlers undergo regular and intensive training to ensure theyre ready to be deployed to the frontline.
Last Saturday, association members visited Werribee for a training day with staff from the University of Melbourne Veterinary Hospital, where handlers received training on what to do if their dogs have a medical emergency during a search.
Handlers took part in exercises with dogs and dog mannequins simulating real-life scenarios.
Founded in Melbourne in 1995, the Australian Swiss Search Dog Association is currently focused on the training and assessing of urban search and rescue dog teams. Its members are regularly called upon to work with emergency services, including the CFA and SES.

Man banned from WyndhamA Corio man has been banned from entering the Wyndham area after being caught last week with allegedly stolen goods valued at $1710. Police stopped the mans vehicle as it left Bunnings carpark on Old Geelong Road at Hoppers Crossing on October 15, uncovering goods allegedly stolen from Bunnings, Aldi and Baby Bunting. The man, 48, was charged with shop stealing, handling stolen goods, possessing proceeds of crime, driving an unregistered vehicle and unlicensed driving. He has been bailed to appear at court at a later date.
New pavilion at Goddard StreetA new sports pavilion has been built at Tarneits Goddard Street reserve to boost facilities for the Wyndham Suns Football Club and the Tarneit Cricket Club. The $2.5 million pavilion was built by the council to provide the clubs with change rooms, storage space, umpires facilities, a first aid room, social room and kitchen.

A group of international visitors to Melbournes Spring Racing Carnival received a crash course in Australian rules with players from Werribee Football Club at Chirnside Park last Monday. The carnival contingent from Japan, England, Germany and France were guided through drills, including marking, handballing and kicking, with some even showing a natural flair for our national winter sport. TH NOVEMBER By Cameron TaitOne of Khurram Jahanghir Khans students once asked him why he volunteered so much of his time.
His reply was simple: There are 60 minutes in every hour and 24 hours in every day and I dont want to waste a single minute or breath.
Since arriving with his family from Pakistan only 18 months ago, the 19-year-old has selflessly devoted himself to the community.
A first-year biomedicine student at the University of Melbourne, Khurram volunteers as a tutor co-ordinator at the Sudanese Australian Integrated Learning Program, where he teaches high school science subjects using creative activities and modern technology.
The Werribee resident also helps students from disadvantaged backgrounds with their VCE studies and has helped a range of charity organisations, including Vinnies and Amnesty International, while hes also a member of the Rotary Club of Hoppers Crossing.
Khurrams extraordinary contribution to society was recognised last week, when Premier Denis Napthine named him as the Duke of Edinburgh Awards Volunteer of the Year.
It [the award] was a complete shock, he said.As a tutor, I try to keep students engaged
by helping them with their English and their science subjects. Coming from a migrant background myself, I can share my experiences because Ive faced the same hurdles they have.
Khurram was one of seven Victorians to be recognised at the award ceremony, which
highlighted and celebrated some of the outstanding achievements made by volunteers across Victoria.
I believe we all have a responsibility to give back to the community, but volunteering starts at home then within your neighbourhood and then your city, he said.
The simplest form of charity is smiling. But even a smile has the power to change lives.
Whether through volunteering or pursuing his dream to be a doctor specialising in immunology, Khurram wants to change lives.
Medicine provides an opportunity to help people in so many ways, he said.
As a doctor, youre connected to the community and you can help people understand their problems and help cure and prevent diseases. You can make a difference.

Whats your connection to the local community?Ive lived in Werribee about 45 years and been involved in many community groups during that time. I have been a Justice of the Peace (JP) for more than 20 years and was chairperson of the Royal Victorian Association of Honorary Justices, Wyndham branch; Im now vice-chairperson. JPs provide voluntary services to the community as independent witnesses to statutory declarations, powers of attorney and affidavits.
Im director of the board of Western Health and a member of the Heritage Council Victoria. In the past, I was director of Manor Court Aged Care for 15 years, which was extremely fulfilling. And Ive been an authorised civil celebrant for many years, performing weddings and funerals.
How has Wyndham changed over the years?I remember there not being any traffic lights or roundabouts. I recall shopping at Rushfords and Deneys, and the population being under 20,000 and everyone knowing each other.
What do you like about your neighbourhood?The river, Werribee South, open spaces and walking along the beautiful beach. We have great tourist attractions with the zoo, mansion and rose garden. Werribee still has a country suburb atmosphere.
What would you change?More people need to be involved in community work, giving about an hour a week as volunteers. The traffic and rail crossings need

to be improved, especially at Cherry Street, along with our infrastructure. Id like to see Werribee Plaza finished and more artwork around to create some fun. I love the platypus dancers, dogs and family in Watton Street. It would be great to have coffee shops along the river, too.
Whats your favourite eatery?Im out a lot so I love being at home with friends gossiping. I often get cakes from Mondells and cream sponges from Country Loaf to share with them or make my own Swedish cinnamon buns.
How do you spend your downtime?I enjoy spending time with my grandchildren, sometimes making cakes with them, and card-making.
I also like to visit Werribee Park rose garden and I like to relax in our own garden with a coffee.

Wyndham Citys advocacy campaign Wyndham Moving received a major boost with the release of an advocacy Wyndham. The launch of the advocacy paper was a big success receiving extensive media coverage on Channels 7 and 9, the Age newspaper and an interview with Jon Faine on 774 ABC radio. Students in years 11 and 12 will have a chance to learn a trade and help build new homes in Point Cook following the launch of the Simonds Building and Trade Program.
The program, a joint initiative of education provider SEDA, the Builders Academy and building company Simonds, will allow students to complete year 12 and a pre-apprenticeship.
Students will work on houses being built by Simonds in Point Cook, learning carpentry, bricklaying, wall and floor tiling and plastering. Theyll spend one day a week on work placement
Tradies learn at schooland another day working in the community completing hands-on projects directly linked to their learning.
SEDA director Chris Reidy said the program would help students develop knowledge and practical skills across various trades.
Students will have the opportunity to gain first-hand industry experience while learning from industry experts, he said.
Launching the program last Tuesday, AFL legend Kevin Sheedy, a licensed plumber, said the program would help students who wanted hands-on learning, allowing them to choose their preferred trade and employment
pathways. The program also has the support of the federal government.
Assistant Education Minister Sussan Ley said students who took part in the program would learn key employability skills such as organisation, teamwork and initiative.
She said the program aimed to create five-star apprentices for five-star employees.
Vocational education and training in schools must be responsive to industry needs to ensure students have the skills they need for real jobs in the real economy, she said.
