Wayne State University's medical library transferred to the University Archivesan incomplete card catalog relating to medical history, education, and biographyand a collection of medical articles and reprints. The compiler of the catalog wasprobably Fanny J. Anderson.

This collection primarily consists of articles and reprints written by Detroitphysicians, many of whom were faculty members of the Wayne State University Schoolof Medicine and its antecedent colleges. There are also several addresses. Thematerial is filed alphabetically by author and then is in chronological order. Each citation consists of author, title, and date of publication.

The medical history card catalog "covers material relating to the medical historyof Detroit and includes references to Wayne County, Michigan, and the UnitedStates if they have any bearing on Detroit history." Entries on the catalog cardsand in Anderson's Medicine in Detroit and Michigan, 1837-1940: A Bibliography arefrequently similar and often identical. However, subject entries are different. The researcher should consult both the Bibliography, which was obtained from theShiffman Medical Library in 1979, and the catalog cards received from the libraryin the early 1960s. The Bibliography and the medical biography book catalogdescribed below are located in the reading room with the reference materials.

The biography section of the card catalog was retained by the Archives until1979. At that time it was learned that the Shiftman Medical Library hadpreviously retyped the catalog and used a book rather than a card catalogformat. Mary McNamara, Shiftman Medical Library, loaned the book catalog to theArchives. Since the entries were identical, the catalog cards were destroyed anda copy of the book catalog was made.
