CONFIGURATIONWärtsilä supplies various configurations of Fire Water Pump Packages (FWPP), including:• Diesel/hydraulicdrivensystem.• Directdieseldrivensystem.• Directelectricdrivensystem,verticalor horizontal.Allsystemscanbedeliveredwitheitherin-linecentrifugalpumpsordeepwellsubmergedpumps.WärtsiläHamworthyFWPPs are designedtobeself-containedaccordingtoNFPA20regulations,whilemeetingtheoperationalrequirementsofthemarine,offshore,andonshoremarkets. BROAD SCOPE OF SYSTEM SOLUTIONS TO MEET REQUIREMENTSWärtsilä has more than 100 years experience in the design and manufacture of pumps.Our development of system solutions to meet customer needs for fire water pump package installations is based on this extensive experience. Fire Water Pump Packages (FWPP) are crucial for safety, and Wärtsilä Hamworthy FWPPs meet the National Fire Protection Association’s NFPA 20 standard and class requirements. Wärtsilä’s global service network provides reliable operational support for its oil industry customers, especially during emergency operations.

DIESEL/ELECTRIC DRIVEN SYSTEM(fig.3&4)Thediesel/electricdrivensystemisapplicableforFWPPinstallationsabovethelowwaterline,typicallyinacompartmentbelowdeckintheforepeakofaFPSO.AtypicalFWPPsystemforsuchainstallationconsistsofthefollowingasaminimum:• Dieselengine• Dieseldrivenboosterpump• Electricdrivenliftpump• Dieseldrivengeneratorsystem• NFPA20controllerTheelectricdrivenliftpumpisinstalleddry.Suctionisfromaseachestandwaterispumpedtotheboosterpumpthatisconnecteddirectlytothemaindieselengine.Toreducetheriskofwaterhammers,anon-returnvalveisinstalledafterthedryinstalledin-lineliftpump(fig.3).Theboostandliftpumpconfigurationcanalsobechangedtoafullliftpumpconceptwheretheelectricdrivenliftpumptakesthefullrequiredpressure(fig.4). PUMP FEATURESWärtsilä’sin-lineconfigurationsforfirewaterpumpshavethefollowingfeatures:• Doublesuctionimpellerswithlow NPSHrenablethepumpto operateat150%capacitywithout cavitations.• Ni-Albronzeusedasthestandard material.Othermaterials,suchas duplexandsuperduplex,areavailable asoptions.• Doublevolute.• Lightweight,compactandrobust design.• Mechanicalshaftsealasstandard, othersealarrangementsareavailable onrequest. Thedeepwellpumpsusedhavethefollowingfeatures:• Multistage,singlesuctionvertical deepwellpump.• Materialin316L,DuplexorSuper DuplexSS.• Capacitiesupto1800m3/h.• Pumpdesigninaccordancewith API610.

ELECTRIC DRIVEN SYSTEM (fig.7)TheelectricdrivensystemissuitablewhentheFWPPisinstalledbeneaththelowwaterline.Thefirepumpcanbesuppliedinbothverticalandhorizontalconfigurations.Dependingonthesizeandrequirementoftheel.motor,themotormaybecooledwithwatertakenfromthefirepumporbyair.AtypicalFWPPsystemforsuchaninstallationconsistsofthefollowing:• Firepump• Electricmotor• NFPA20controller/starter.Theelectricdrivensystemcanalsobesuppliedwithadieselgeneratorsetasshowninfig.4.

8. DIESEL HYDRAULIC FWPP SYSTEM
NFPA 20 CONTROLLERTheNFPA20controllerensuresthatthepumpoperatesaccordingtotheregulationsgiveninNFPA20.TheFWPPsystemissuppliedself-contained,andisinaccordancewithstrictoperationalrequirementssuchaswheninfiremode,thecontrollerwillonlystartthefirepumpwhen:• Thefiremainpressuredropsbelowtheset valueofthepressureswitch• Receivingafire&gassignal• Receivingamanualstartsignal,either locallyorremote• Awiringfailureoccurs(fail-safedesign) Likewiseinfiremode,thecontrollerwill onlystoptheenginewhen: -Engineoverspeeds -Localstopbuttonispushed

STARTING SYSTEMSTwoseparatestartingsystemsshouldbeinstalledasperNFPA20requirements.Thefollowingthreetypesareavailable:• Electricstartingwithbatteries• Pneumaticstartingwithpressurizedair• Hydraulicstartingwithpressurizedhydraulic oilThestartingsystemmostfrequentlyusedforcomplyingwiththeregulationsisthedoubleelectricstarter.Thisisthemostcosteffectivesolution.Allstartingmethodscanbeusedincombinations.

AfullStringTestisperformedforthecomplete Fire Water Pump Package at ourSingaporeplantforalltypesofFWPPconfiguration.TheStringTestisperformedinaccordancewithNFPA20requirements
and includes a running test at 100 and 150% capacities.ThecomprehensivetestprogramensuresthattheNPFA20Controllerisfunctioningcorrectlyinallrequiredmodesandthatitreactscorrectlytoallspecifiedalarms.
