WILDLIFE RANCHING NAMIBIA (WRN) ESTABLISHED! “Like South Africa, Namibia is one of the few countries which recognises the private ownership of indigenous game animals. Hence, like South Africa, game numbers have soared in Namibia. Thus, unlike most of the rest of the world, the conservation benefits of sustainable utilisation of our natural resources are there for all to see in these two countries. WRSA assisted with the planning and arrangements of a game ranching workshop in Windhoek on Saturday 25 October where prominent game ranchers from both South Africa and Namibia shared their experiences and where at the end, Wildlife Ranching Namibia (WRN) was formed and the Chairperson and committee chosen. I see this as a significant step as it will be a big boost to the Namibian Wildlife Ranching industry as well as our own as we have agreed to work together on many of our common problems to the benefit of Ranchers in both Countries. We from SA, congratulate them!” Klim in! Doen dit!” Dr Johan Kriek, Minister Phohamba Shifete & Mike Bredenkamp WRN chairperson Ellalien Davey Dr Peter Oberem Annette Oelofse 2. ROMACO RANCH SPONSORED A LIVINGSTONE ELAND! Romaco Ranch sponsored a Livingstone Eland in favour of the WRSA Research Fund. The trophy animal was collectively bought by the Trophy Breeders Group (www.trophybreeders.co.za) for a total amount of R510 000 at the 2 nd annual WRSA Auction in Thabazimbi on 11 October 2014. Ellalien Davey, WRSA Wildlife Rancher of the Year 2013, sponsored the male Livingstone Eland with horn measurements of L 36” R 34 1/2” and a base of 11” in the interest of much needed industry research. For more information, refer to http://www.mpatamachawild.co.za/node/2241 3. PMF QUESTIONNAIRE The estimated impact of predation on the commercial small and large livestock sector is in excess of R1.7 billion a year. The extent of the financial impact on the wildlife ranching sector is unknown, because we deal with wild animals and it is difficult to quantify losses. A study is currently being conducted by the University of the Free State under the guidance of Prof HO de Waal to estimate the impact of predation on the wildlife industry – it is suspected that predation has a huge impact on all game ranchers in South Africa. They need to gather as much information as possible to render a reliable and accurate report. Please assist Prof HO de Waal and colleagues by completing the attached questionnaire and return it directly to the University of the Free State at [email protected] If more information is needed on the questionnaire, you may contact the researchers at the same e-mail address. All personal information is treated confidentially. We once again appeal to EVERYONE to complete this questionnaire. The framework of the Best Practices for predation management was accepted at the most recent PMF meeting. MOREDUN “SNOTSIEKTE” TECHNOLOGY FOR SA? Dr Riaan du Preez, head of Scientific affairs at Afrivet, and Prof Moritz van Vuuren of the UP Veterinary Faculty, Onderstepoort, departed on Wednesday 29 October for meetings at Moredun Research Institute, Edinburgh, Scotland where they will be progressing 2 projects with their fellow scientists there: 1. The local production of a vaccine against wire worm/”haarwurm”/ Haemonchus spp. Local South African field trials have already been completed, the scientific dossier compiled by Afrivet and submitted to the Registrar Act 36 about 2 years ago now. We are looking forward to the registration in due course. As the initial proposal from Moredun was that we should buy vaccine from Australia where the product is already registered, despite being given to their authorities after it was submitted here. Unfortunately the cost is prohibitive. A proposal for local South African production has been made to Moredun and during this visit we hope to allay their fears about the quality of the product we will manufacture here. 2. The second aim of the trip is to gather first hand all the information necessary to progress the local manufacture of and testing in South Africa of the Moredun developed malignant Catarrhal Fever/”snotsiekte” vaccine. This is the field of expertise of Prof van Vuuren. We hope therefore that by facilitation the transfer of all the necessary information and virus isolates we will be able to facilitate a quicker start to the local trials and hence the registrations in South Africa. UK based Moredun Pentlands Science Park near Edinburgh is committed to promoting animal health and welfare through research and education and is recognized worldwide for its contribution to research into infectious diseases of farmed livestock. Established by Scottish farmers in 1920, Moredun’s work has always been firmly based on addressing the needs of the farming industry and Moredun’s research has led to the development of many vaccines, diagnostic tests and improved treatment strategies for farm animals across the globe. Dr du Preez will also visit the manufacturer of etorphine, the highly dangerous active ingredient of M99, with a view to ensuring that in future we in SA have a backup source when the local suppliers and manufacturers of M99 are having difficulties supplying the product. We cannot again go through the shortages and consequent significant losses experienced by veterinarians and game ranchers alike as experienced over the past number of months. We wish these 2 scientists all the best in their important endeavours. 5. WRSA MEMBER DISCOUNT ON BLACK IMPALA TESTS! The Veterinary Genetics Laboratory (VGL) at Onderstepoort, University of Pretoria recently identified a mutation associated with the black phenotype in the impala. In 2013, Johan van der Merwe of Leopard Rock – through WRSA (Wildlife Ranching South Africa) – provided some initial funding to start a project to determine the mutation responsible for the black impala. The laboratory subsequently found the mutation associated with this coat colour and developed a test which identifies carriers of the black mutation. Nyumbu Game and Mauritzfontein Stud Farm provided samples for the validation of this test. In September 2014, VGL visited Leopard Rock to obtain specific blood samples as part of a group of experts who attended an intensive game capture project. Dr Susan Miller reported on her experience at Leopard Rock: “I had the privilege of working with Dr Cindy Harper on this project and joining Johan van der Merwe and his team at Leopard Rock, in September, for three days of intense game capture. Being interested in the genetics of the colour variants of impala, this was an opportunity to collect some incredibly valuable blood samples from some of these animals for my research project. I was particularly keen to get samples of offspring and their parents. There was one known family group that included “Female 50”. Her capture at the end of the first day was very memorable. All of the previous impala has been darted from the helicopter and quite quickly succumbed to the effects of the drugs for a relatively easy capture, processing, and release. Female 50 however, was a fighter. She refused to give up – with the adrenaline in her system counter-acting the effects of the drug. So the vet had to give her several extra doses. Eventually the drugs were too much and she was captured, blood taken, the drug reversed, and she re-joined her herd. Success at last and we all breathed a sigh of relief! Overall it was an amazing three days working with some incredibly talented people”. In order to show appreciation to WRSA for their support the VGL is offering a 25% discount to WRSA members on the black impala test. Members need to reference their WRSA membership number with each sample submitted for testing for the black impala mutation. Submission forms can be obtained by emailing: [email protected] For more information, contact Dr Cindy Harper: [email protected] Read a detailed article on this topic in the October issue of Wildlife Ranching magazine – The BREEDING issue. 6. WILDLIFE RANCHING – THE BREEDING ISSUE Extensive, intensive and selective breeding of rare and endangered species forms an integral part of a pro-active approach to prevent extinction. We’ve all been debating the proverb, “if it pays, it stays.” Maybe, if it pays better, it stays? Or, if it pays – does it stay? Southern African wildlife ranchers have the vision, desire, ability and ethics to develop and implement economic, environmental and social opportunities associated with sustainable conservation to ensure we can continue to sense the magical thrill of seeing wild animals roaming in Africa, whilst satisfying the demand for trophy hunting and actively contributing to world food security. Extensive, intensive and selective breeding of rare and endangered species forms an integral part of a pro-active approach to prevent extinction.
