DIET AND DENTAL HEALTHQ: I know sugar’s not good for teeth. What other foods
are generally not good for dental health?
A: You’re right about the sugar. Your mouth is full
of bacteria that naturally occur there. The bacteria
love sugar – and starch. And when your teeth are not
thoroughly clean, the bacteria eat the sugar and starch
that form a film on your teeth – the plaque. The
byproduct of their eating is acid that can eat through the
enamel, resulting in decay.
It’s hard to avoid sugar entirely, and you don’t have to;
fruit, milk, bread, cereals and vegetables all contain
sugar. But avoid sugary snacks. The American Dental
Association estimates each sugary snack results in an acid
attack on your teeth lasting 20 minutes or more. If you
feel the urge for a snack, reach for fruit, nuts, seeds, raw
vegetables, plain yogurt, popcorn, dill pickles, and olives.
Sugar and starches eaten as part of a meal are less harmful
than when eaten alone. During a meal, your mouth is
producing substantial saliva, which helps wash away
food particles. Avoid things like cake, chips, cookies, and
crackers when you’re eating them by themselves.

Students get creative through Genius Hour projectBy MARY BETH [email protected]
W O O D R I D G E – T h esixth-graders at MeadowviewElementary School in Wo-odridge were in for a specialtreat on their last day of schoolJune 10, all thanks to two oftheir peers.
When it was time for stu-dents Jacky Gomez and TrevorGaspar to pick a topic for theirGenius Hour project, it waseasy: ice cream, because theyboth love it. So when the vicepresident of supply chain forOberweis stopped by the schoolon its last day, students not onlygot to learn all about ice cream, they also got to taste some of thefrozen treat themselves.
Genius Hour is a movementthat allows students to exploretheir own passions and ideas, modeled after Google’s “20%Time,” where employees areencouraged to take on projectsaway from their main respon-sibilities. For one hour eachweek, students undertakethese passion projects.
“It’s to allow students to tapinto their creativity and givethem an opportunity to learnmore about something they’repassionate about,” said Me-lissa Love, learning resourcecenter director.
Jacky and Trevor spent sixweeks working on their Genius
Hour project, as did the restof the sixth-grade class at theschool on their own projects.Students at other WoodridgeSchool District 68 schools com-pleted projects as well, mark-ing the first year the districtparticipated in the program.
After choosing ice creamas their topic, Jacky and Trev-or, who both have Down syn-drome, got down to work.
They did online researchand even got to make some icecream themselves, they said. They were helped by their
teaching assistants, MelissaDawson and Karen Kennard, and other staff.
One interesting fact theylearned was that the first writ-ten record of ice cream was inChina, Dawson said.
While the students were
doing their research, theydecided to send an email to alocal company to learn aboutits history of ice cream. Ober-weis agreed to send a represen-tative to the school to talk toJacky, Trevor and their peers.
“I read it, and I was like, ‘I’dlove to do this,’” Vice Presi-dent of Supply Chain Pete Allesaid, adding it’s important tothe company to be a part of itscommunities.
During his visit, Alle dis-cussed how Oberweis makesits ice cream and answeredstudents’ questions.
Jacky asked how newflavors are chosen. Alle ex-plained those decisions of-ten come from the customersthemselves who sometimesask for certain flavors.
Trevor wanted to knowwhat the cows eat. The answerwas alfalfa and corn.
The two students hit it offwith Alle, sharing high fivesand posing for photos.
Trevor’s dad, Jeff Gaspar, said it was great to see his sonparticipate in the project.
“It let him meet a new per-son because Trevor loves tomeet people,” Gaspar said.
Both Jacky and Trevor saidthey had fun doing their Ge-nius Hour project, and theyagreed one of the best partswas getting to do the hands-onresearch of eating ice cream.

D-58 talks future upgradesBy EVAN SHIELDS
D O W N E R S G R O V E –Downers Grove Grade SchoolDistrict 58 is preparing for asummer of improvements.
The Board of Education re-ceived an update about sched-uled summer improvementsJune 8.
Rick Bubula, director ofbuildings and grounds, said inan interview after the meetingthat one of the biggest projectsgoing on this summer is the re-placement of carpets at BelleAire and El Sierra elementaryschools. Carpet is being tornout at Belle Aire and crewslikely will move to El Sierranext month.
Bubula said the carpets inthe two schools are 33 yearsold. There are 13 classroomsat Belle Aire getting carpetstorn out and 19 at El Sierra. The project is expected to cost$180,000.
Superintendent Kari Cre-mascoli said in an interview
after the meeting that floor re-placement in district elemen-tary schools has been an on-going project for the last threeyears and that this is the laststage of that replacement.
Another big project occur-ring during the summer willbe the repaving of the southparking lot at O’Neill MiddleSchool.
“That project will be donein early July,” Bubula said.
The project is expected tocost $110,000.
Additionally, swings atHighland and Lester elemen-tary schools will be replaced. The district has not receivedthe new equipment yet, butBubula said it will be installedas soon as it arrives.
“The swings are extreme-ly old. We maintained themin good shape, but it’s time toreplace the entire unit,” hesaid.
The board also discussedlong-term projects at the meet-ing.
Cremascoli said admin-
istrators like to periodicallyhave conversations about fa-cilities projects with the boardto keep board members up-to-date on facilities.
She said improvements tothe science labs at the districtmiddle schools have been “onour list of needs now for a cou-ple of years.”
The district is going towait until it finishes the newscience curriculum before de-ciding what is needed in theclassrooms. That way, Cre-mascoli said, the district won’tpurchase any unnecessaryequipment or leave out equip-ment that might end up beingessential.
The only other item dis-cussed at the meeting was theadministrative office. Thedistrict uses two offices, butit would like to get down toone.
“We wanted to look at these, but at this point, our financ-es don’t accommodate makingany changes there,” Cremas-coli said.

A split College of DuPage Board ofTrustees voted to hold down the finan-cial fort by hiring a consultant firmafter the school put a pair of top admin-istrators on paid leave following a bur-ied investment audit coming to light.
The board hired Chicago-based AlixPartners with a 4-3 vote June 11.
The vote took place two days afterThomas Glaser, senior vice presidentof administration and treasurer, andLynn Sapyta, assistant vice presidentof financial affairs and controller, wereplaced on leave pending the results ofan ongoing investigation.
Consultants John Dischner andKurt Beckeman will take over the trea-surer’s office and oversee its day-to-day operations.
Dischner said the firm has experi-ence in high-profile cases and instanc-
es of an investigation or perceived lossof credibility.
“We’re certainly not looking to re-invent the wheel in any situation,” hesaid. “Generally, by the time our firmis invited into a situation, there’s someaspect that you don’t want to repeat.”
Beckeman said they will emphasizebuilding relationships with collegestaff to handle daily responsibilities ofthe office and look at policy changesand performance improvement.
Glaser and Sapyta were ousted afteran internal audit revealed the schoolviolated board policy by over-invest-ing in specific types of funds, amongother violations. An investment of 29.2
percent of the college’s portfolio, or $80million, in the Illinois Metropolitan In-vestment Fund led to about $2.2 millionof the school’s money being effectivelyfrozen in 2014 after the fund default-ed on certain guaranteed loans. Boardpolicy states investment in such localgovernment investment pools cannotexceed 5 percent.
The board was split in approvingthe contract, with newly elected reformtrustees and Chairwoman Kathy Ham-ilton voting in favor and longer-serv-ing trustees Erin Birt, Joesph Wozniakand Dianne McGuire against it.
McGuire said the pre-election boardapproved all investments and should
have noticed and corrected the spend-ing earlier. She also said she support-ed investing in funds with higherpromised returns and that the previ-ous board was scheduled to considereasing restrictions in a canceled Aprilmeeting.
“We have made a rush to judgmenton the two that are on administrativeleave,” McGuire said. “I am not con-vinced this is a step we have to take.”
Both Birt and Wozniak questionedthe cost of the firm, which is charginga $685-per-hour rate for Dischner tooversee the project. The college gaveAlix a $15,000 retainer and the firmwill work hourly, Dischner said, mak-ing an extra effort to be efficient incharging the school. He said the workcould require at least two full-timeAlix employees.
Board Vice Chairwoman DeanneMazzochi put the tab on past trustees.
“The costs we have to incur forAlix or anyone else who comes in tofill this role while Mr. Glaser and Ms.Sapyta are on administrative leave isa cost, frankly, on the prior board,”she said. “It’s your fault we’re in thisscenario today. You don’t blame thecleanup crew that has to come fixyour mess.”

Homeowners, small businesses and families in Illinois havesuffered for years under high property taxes – particularly inthe suburbs where taxes are rising faster than inflation and out-pacing home values. To alleviate this costly burden I sponsoredGov. Bruce Rauner’s property tax reform proposal that freezesproperty taxes and increaseslocal control over costs.
Illinoisans deserve action, not talk. But, talk is all we’vegotten recently as Democratsin the Legislature continue toblock our proposal.
In the latest study, over a five-year period Illinois hadthe third-highest residential property tax rate in the nation, behind only New Jersey and New Hampshire, according tothe Tax Foundation and the Taxpayers’ Federation of Illinois’May 2015 report. Other studies show Illinois having the sec-ond-highest property tax rates in the nation.
This is unacceptable. Illinois taxpayers deserve better.Sadly, the consequence of high property taxes is many fam-
ilies and businesses have been forced to leave our state, andmore will follow if we don’t do something. Recently, the Senateconvened a “Committee of the Whole” to receive testimony andask questions about property tax reform.
Senate Democrat lawmakers invited testimony from anumber of credentialed and educated panelists, including taxexperts and education and local government representatives. However, glaringly absent from the panel were those most dra-matically impacted by Illinois’ high property taxes – taxpayers.
I recognize how a property tax freeze would impact local schoolsand services, but our proposal, Senate Bill 1046, would give localgovernments the tools to lower their costs. It also empowers taxpay-ers. If residents want more funding for education, libraries or otherservices they have the authority to raise taxes through referendum.
High property taxes is the number one call I get from myconstituents in the 41st district, yet Democrats refuse to come tothe negotiating table to talk about relief for Illinois homeownersand employers. Constituents ask me how it’s possible for theirproperty taxes to constantly go up, even when the value of theirhouse has gone down. Clearly, the answer our state has beengiving them hasn’t been good enough for quite some time.
It is time we stop stalling, and start doing what is best forthe state of Illinois. It is my hope we can work together in bi-partisan fashion in the coming weeks to develop a solution thatoffers much-needed property tax relief for hardworking Illinoisfamilies and businesses.
Christine Radogno, R-Lemont, is the Illinois Senate Repub-lican Leader.

Why we rarely use anonymousquotes, and when we would
If you’ve been a reader of SuburbanLife over the past couple of years, youmight have noticed that we almost neveruse anonymous sources in our stories. It’s a pretty common practice at somenews organizations to publish anonymousquotes on a regular basis. It’s something we try toavoid, and for some veryspecific reasons:
• Over-reliance onanonymous sources canerode the trust of readers.News organizations thatdo it a lot will inevitably be burned. It’sjust common sense that sooner or later, something that’s published anonymouslywill turn out to be incorrect. That canlead readers to wonder if any anonymousspeaker is a legitimate source of informa-tion.
• Readers have no way to evaluate thetrustworthiness of an anonymous source. If we were to publish comments indictinga local government body, for instance, thesource of those allegations matters a lot.The perspective of someone ousted from aboard, for instance, is very different fromthat of an employee who reports to thatboard. Both can be valuable sources, buthow you judge what they have to say isvery much affected by who they are.
• People who provide anonymous infor-mation can’t be held accountable. A personwho offers us a juicy news tip but insiststhat we can’t use their name could theoret-ically be making up their story. We wouldof course try to verify the information theyprovide independently, but sometimes youcan’t. If the information later turns out tobe false, then Suburban Life is on the hookfor the falsehood, not the person who toldit to us.
Even with all these caveats, there aretimes when we seriously consider pub-lishing stories with anonymous sources. It
happens once in a while and it will contin-ue to happen. There are certain criteria weconsider doing it:
• The source needs to be credible –someone who we can verify is in a positionto know what they’re claiming to know.
• The source needs tohave a compelling reasonfor keeping their identi-ty secret – if they couldface real repercussionsor have their reputationdamaged, for instance.
• The informationthey’re providing must serve the publicinterest, and it must be information thatwe simply can’t glean from anywhere else.
It’s a balancing act, a judgement callwith no clear right or wrong answer. We’ve had what we thought were goodstories fall through because we just didn’tquite trust what we were being told. Butthat’s better than the alternative – publish-ing something that’s false.
Regardless, if you’ve got a story that’snot being told, if there’s wrongdoing goingunreported in your town, we want to hearabout it. We much prefer that our sourcesgo on the record, but we’ll gladly chat offthe record if you like. Just tell us right offthat bat that you don’t want your nameused, and we’ll guarantee your privacy.Maybe you can’t let us use your name, butyou know someone else who might. Maybeyou’ve got copies of documents that cantell the story so you don’t have to.
The best place to start is with the newsteam, whose email or phone numbers youcan find on page 2 of this paper. You canalso reach me via my contact info listedbelow. It can’t hurt to call us up and have aconversation.

SOUND OFFUsing toxic chemicals on lawnsI agree with comments regarding toxic
chemicals in our community. I’m pregnantand [I] can’t even walk in my subdivi-sion, sit in my yard or open my windowsbecause so many of our neighbors havelawn chemical treatments every month. It’s amazing to me that after all theseyears and the knowledge we now haveabout the cancers and other serious prob-lems these products cause that peoplestill use them. It is their choice, but it alsoaffects my family, my pets and myself, which isn’t fair. No chemical is safe; thinkabout what you are doing.
We need Rauner to be a dictatorThis is in response to the person who
said [Gov. Bruce] Rauner was electedgovernor, not dictator. Well, the stateof Illinois needs a dictator. We don’tneed any more of these Democrats whowouldn’t recognize a balanced budget ifit bit them. What we need is a guy who isgoing to go out and get the balanced bud-get and go after these people who are al-ways asking for more, more, more – thesepublic service unions. It used to be thatteachers made a small amount of money, and people felt sorry for them. But nowthey’re trying to hide the fact that theaverage teacher makes over $100,000 ayear. How many of their students’ parentsmake that kind of money? [Rauner] coulddo a better job if he just showed thosefree spending Democrats the door.
Madigan is the real dictatorIf you’re going to call anyone a dicta-
tor, it should be House Speaker MichaelMadigan. He’s mostly responsible for themess that the state is in. He’s been inpower for 30 years. Gov. [Bruce] Raunerhas been in office for five months. Put theblame where it belongs.
I agree with Bob CostasI never agree much with sportscaster
Bob Costas. When he speaks on non-sports issues, I don’t agree with himmuch. But I totally agree with him about BruceJenner getting this Arthur Ashe coura-geous award in July on ESPN. Costas saidJenner getting the award was crass, tab-loid stuff. Political correctness run amok. Icould’t agree with Costas more, and he’s aliberal himself. Well, CBS will be expectinghuge rating on that night. … How sad.
Responding to cyclists on the roadIf bicyclists would stay on their bike
paths that they wanted so badly and carsstay on the road – what they’re supposedto be – there shouldn’t be a problem.
Cars have a proper place to drive, bikesshould have a proper place to drive.Nobody should be getting in each other’sway if they just stayed on the bicyclepaths like they’re supposed to.
Biking rules of the roadIn response to the writer [in Sound Off]
about bicyclists being allowed to take upthe whole road. He can’t pick and choose. If you’re riding in a 40 mph area you bet-ter stay as close to the curb as you can.
Just fix what you haveThe Downers Grove Village Council plans
to build a police station and Village Hall onOgden Avenue. They have solid walls atthe place they are at now. They should geta price to have work done where they’reat now. It’s centrally located, and I wonderif they’re moving it over to Ogden Avenueto be close to where they live. They needto cut back on money spending, and itdoesn’t cost $60 million to renovate thosebuildings. So quit wasting our money.
Close buildings along tracksif police station moves? On June 2, a [Downers Grove] council
member was concerned about a railtanker explosion wiping out the policestation. Downers Grove is building newcondos closer than the station. Whatabout our citizens who are sleeping atnight? At least the police are awake toevacuate. If Downers Grove moves thepolice station for this reason, we shouldnot allow any other new developmentscloser to the tracks and discourage occu-pancy in the current buildings and shutdown the business district.

WDCBmanager may have known about fraud
By NATHAN [email protected]
A previously redacted report re-leased by the College of DuPage Boardof Trustees shows the school’s formerWDCB radio station manager mayhave known about aninvestigation of an em-ployee who allegedlystole thousands fromthe college years beforesenior administrationlearned of the possiblewrongdoing.
The board unani-mously approved re-leasing the independent report by Wil-liams Montgomery and John, Ltd. tothe public during its June 11 specialmeeting. The school hired the firm inFebruary to investigate whether Elm-hurst College notified the College of
DuPage after learning of then-WDCBemployee John Valenta’s criminal be-havior at Elmhurst.
Valenta, who worked as the WDCBstation engineer from 1979 to 2014,is charged with stealing more than$100,000 from the station after allegedlyfiling false invoices for parts and workperformed by his company, BroadcastTechnologies.
Valenta’s employment continueddespite his being convicted of simi-lar offenses at Elmhurst College, thereport stated – even though formerWDCB manager Scott Wager may haveknown about the previous investiga-tion.
The 2011 investigation found crewswere not present on days Valentaclaimed they were performing servicesand equipment supposedly purchased
by Elmhurst College through Broad-cast Technologies did not exist at theschool radio station.
Phone records and an interviewwith Caroline Krause, assistant direc-tor of campus security at ElmhurstCollege, indicated she spoke to the Col-lege of DuPage Police Department overthe phone Jan. 31, 2011, and Feb. 1, 2011,to alert the school it was investigatingValenta for fraud, the report stated.
However, the College of DuPageofficer she spoke to – whose name isredacted in the report – did not log thecall in the department’s Computer Aid-ed Dispatch System – a breach in de-partment policy. On Feb. 1, an officercontacted Krause and said he lookedinto the matter and was “dismissive ofher concerns,” according to the report.
The report stated it “appears most
likely that Wager assuaged any con-cerns by telling [redacted officer] thatthe college’s internal controls wouldnot allow such a fraud to take place atCOD.”
The report went on to state therewas “credible information” indicatingthat around March 2011, an employeeat WDCB – whose name was also re-dacted – informed Wager she saw anews report of an investigation con-cerning Valenta.
Wager “looked like a ghost” whenhe saw it, the report stated.
The same employee said she thensaw Wager and Valenta meet days laterbehind closed doors, and assumed thematter was addressed.
College of DuPage’s response todiscoveries made years later indicateno top administrator knew about thefraud before December 2013, accordingto the report.
In 2012, management of WDCB wastransferred to the Marketing and Com-munications Department, headed byJoe Moore. After “generally accept-able” performance reviews throughhis career, Wager was not able to meet
Report indicatessenior administratorswere kept in the dark

“The public has paid for this report. It deserves to read it. ...It describes an unfortunate chapter in COD history that
this board will never allow to happen again.”Kathy Hamilton

Moore’s standards and retiredeffective July 31, 2013, the re-port stated.
Upon taking temporarycontrol of the station, Moorebegan to question Valenta’sactions, particularly frequentovertime charges. Moore latershared his concerns with newstation manager Dan Bindert, hired Oct. 28, 2013.
Bindert also noticed severalirregularities, including oncewhen he was driving to workand heard the station go off air.He called Valenta immediately, who texted he was “on it” be-fore service was restored.
“In retrospect, it is incredible
to Bindert that there could havebeen a failure and that Valentacould have responded to it soquickly,” the report stated.
In December 2013, the engi-neer of another radio stationwarned Bindert to take a clos-er look at Valenta, citing pastproblems. Bindert also was ad-vised the transmitter the col-lege used was known as “bul-letproof” and one that “rarelybreaks down.”
However, Valenta frequent-ly said transmitter and powersupply issues were the sourceof problems requiring purchas-es of parts or equipment.
There was also no record of atransmitter purchase by Broad-cast Technologies from trans-mitter company Harris Technol-ogies, according to the report.
Within 24 hours of thewarning, Bindert brought hisfindings to Moore. Shortly af-terward, senior managementwas assembled to address andinvestigate the allegations.Valenta resigned Feb. 7, 2014,and the firm was hired Feb. 15,2015, to create the report.
Board Chairwoman KathyHamilton said the board “nei-ther endorses nor accepts” thereport, and said it would con-duct its own investigation onthe matter.
“The public has paid forthis report,” she said in astatement released with thereport. “It deserves to read it.... It describes an unfortunatechapter in COD history thatthis board will never allow tohappen again.”

WHEATON – A contempo-rary wood plank facade is thesleek new wrapping for thelatest restaurant enterpriseof chef-owner Brian Goewey, who named Gia Mia after hisyoungest daughter. It openedin downtown Wheaton in Apriland specializes in wood-firedpizza, homemade pasta dishesand small plates, all ideal forsharing the inventive fresh fla-vors the chef already is knownfor at fire + wine in Glen Ellyn, where he’s been a partner.
Gia Mia describes itself asa pizza bar that emphasizesfarm-to-fork Italian cooking. The interior features paleshades of wood and brickthat set a warm tone, alongwith dangling, industrial-chicbulbs for light.
A crowd set a convivialtone in the front dining roomthe weeknight we visited. TheBlackhawks were playing agame running up to the finals, and a television there and oneat the bar kept interested fansup on the score.
We opted for the mellow bararea, which offers lots of stools, and a cozy dining space of itsown, all the better to watch theaction at the pizza oven. Thecontrolled inferno holds courtin all its red-mosaic-tiled gloryin the corner and has ringsideseating for diners.
The wine list is extensiveand offers some plucky sugges-tions off the beaten path, suchas an Austrian white – GrünerVeltliner – for a light summeraperitif. The mixologists alsoproffer craft beer selections.
We opened with a small-plate offering of veal meat-balls basking in a zesty roast-ed tomato sauce and toppedwith little caps of whippedricotta. The creamy cheesemimicked the velvety textureof the mild-flavored, finelyground meat.
We’re glad we tried one ofthe unusual vegetable dishes:charred cauliflower. The del-icate roasted veggie providedthe perfect canvas for a paletteof flavors drawn from greenand black olives, radicchio, parsley, pine nut crumb top-
ping and local honey.Next up had to be wood-
fired pizza, so we decidedon the pancetta and arugulacombination, which arrivedwith a tasty, hand-formedcrust drizzled with olive oil,and showing the tell-talelight charring on the edges.Prepared Neapolitan style, ithad delectable smatteringsof house-made mozzarella tocontrast with the pancetta – anItalian spin on cured bacon –along with tomatoes, garlic, oregano and lemon. It was cov-ered in fresh, baby arugula, awonderfully peppery green.
We left room for dessert, but next time, we plan on twopizzas and some more of thecreative vegetables and saladson the menu such as sugarsnap peas prepared with shal-lots, garlic, mint, whipped ri-cotta and extra virgin olive oil,or the Tuscan black kale withpear, sunflower seeds, radish, candied dates and lemon.
Both pasta and pizza crustare available gluten-free, andthe restaurant offers a variedmenu for children.
As for dessert, we loved theItalian pudding and sorbetcombo, an abundance of rich-
es modestly served in a mug.The cooked-cream, pannacotta-inspired pudding was alight and smooth vanilla basefor the explosion of fruity fla-vor in the blueberry sorbetto. It was outstanding.
Sweets lovers also havesuch temptations as Nutellapizza and ricotta fritters withchocolate chips.
The service was friendlyand pampering, without beingintrusive, helping make GiaMia an engaging new person-
ality on Wheaton’s vibrantdining scene.

ALL-AREA SOFTBALL MVP
Hedgcock ‘phenomenal’ for Downers Grove South
By JASON [email protected]
DOWNERS GROVE – Car-oline Hedgcock excels in allaspects of softball, but she defi-nitely has one part of the gameshe enjoys best.
The Downers Grove Southjunior is an excellent pitcherand just set the school recordfor RBIs in a season, but shewould prefer to dominategames with her arm ratherthan her bat.
“To be honest, it’s gotten tothe point where pitching is myjob and hitting is kind of likethe extra bonus,” Hedgcocksaid. “As a pitcher, it’s kind oflike the only offensive positionwhere you can get an out andhelp your team single-handed-ly.
“I like pitching more.Pitching is my job and at theend of the day I’m more hap-py with my pitching. If I don’tthrow a good game, I’m moreupset about that than hittingbecause hitting is like the bo-nus.”
For a pitcher who also hap-pens to hit (which not all soft-ball pitchers do), Hedgcockcertainly did a lot of damagein the batter’s box. She batted.543 this season with a pro-gram record 68 RBIs. She alsohit 10 home runs, part of a sea-son in which 29 of her 57 hitswent for extra bases.
“She’s very aggressive upthere, and she’s got a greateye,” Downers Grove Southhead coach Ron Havelka said.“If a pitch is a little off the cor-ner, she’ll take it. She’s prettypatient up there.”
As much as Hedgcock im-pressed at the plate, the three-year varsity player did the
same as a lefty in the pitchingcircle. Opposing batters hadjust a .140 average againstHedgcock and she surren-dered just 47 hits in 94 inningspitched.
Her 15-1 record and 1.12ERA only touched on her effec-tiveness.
Not bad for a player whocould barely locate the platewhen she started pitching.
“When I was in third gradeI couldn’t throw the ball to thecatcher to save my life. I waslucky if I didn’t throw it overthe backstop,” Hedgcock said.“I just worked really hard overthe winter in fifth grade and Isuddenly was able to throw astrike. I kind of fell in love withpitching then. I could take it orleave it in third grade, but I fellin love with it after I realizedhow much power I had overthe game.”
Havelka said Hedgcock isunafraid to throw any pitchin any count, helping keep hit-ters off balance. The past twoseasons she has formed a sol-id one-two punch with sopho-more Payton Buresch.
“In the last two years, she’s won 30 games and lostfour,” Havelka said. “Thatalong with her hitting, she’sbeen phenomenal. She’s ac-counted for more runs thanshe’s given up as a pitcher.”
Hedgcock has been a varsi-ty player since her freshmanyear, and Havelka sees a newand improved player comeout each spring. He said hebelieves Hedgcock will comeback better than ever for hersenior season.
“I know one thing – she willwork at it. She’s not one to reston her laurels,” the coach said.“She will work at it. She willspend time working on herpitches to have her pitches bebetter.
“I think she will be betterher senior year.”

28 Despite ending, superb season for DGS softballBy JASON ROSSI
D O W N E R S G R O V E –Downers Grove South’s soft-ball team looked like its usualself for one inning.
The Mustangs got their batsgoing and plated four runs inthe third inning against Maristin a supersectional game onJune 9, but that wasn’t enoughin a 5-4 loss that ended the sea-son.
Despite the way things end-ed, with the Mustangs comingup just short of a state finalsberth while the RedHawkswent on to win state, it was asolid season for DGS.
“It’s been amazing, by farone of the best teams I’ve everplayed on,” senior center field-er Zahrya McFarland said.“The girls were amazing. Icouldn’t ask for a better groupof girls. It was incredible, andI wouldn’t change it for theworld except for [the ending].
“It was the best season as awhole the three years I’ve beenon this team.”
Caroline Hedgcock echoedMcFarland’s thoughts on theseason.
“I loved every moment of it.I loved every girl I played with. There wasn’t any bad blood onthe team,” Hedgcock said.
The Mustangs finished theseason with a 36-2 record withtheir lone regular season losscoming against a solid Down-ers Grove North team on theeve of the state playoffs. Theywon the West Suburban Goldtitle with an 18-0 mark andwere an offensive juggernautall season.
The Mustangs averagednearly 11 runs and 13 hits pergame, and had six everydayplayers – McFarland, Hedg-cock, Kristen Bialek, NicoleBowman, Kristin Lea and Me-gan LoBianco – finish with av-erages over .400.
Hedgcock, Lea and LoBian-co all hit over .500 and are ju-niors who will form the heartof a team that learned somelessons from the tough super-sectional loss this season.
“Tough losses, as muchas they hurt, they definitelymake you better as a player.Things bother you less andyou learn to work throughthose tough parts in a game,”Hedgcock said. “That’s partof softball. There’s going to be
some ups and downs and thesebad games help you preparefor later in life.”
McFarland, Rebekah Ond-racek and Savannah Winklerwere the only seniors on theteam. They left their mark ona DGS team that will returnnearly intact next season.
“These three seniors werevery instrumental,” Southhead coach Ron Havelka said.
“They were leaders in manyways on and off the field andthey meant a lot to us.”
Ondracek will play at El-mhurst College while McFar-land will be continuing herplaying career at NorthernKentucky University next sea-son, but she knows part of herlegacy will be evident whenthe Mustangs take the fieldnext season.
“I think the mark I left atDGS that I want to be knownfor is never giving up and giv-ing 110 percent because who-ever gives more wins,” she
said. “You can’t let up, yougot to keep trucking. You can’tgive up and you have to keepgoing. That’s the most import-ant thing.”
