OVERCOME YOUR DENTALPHOBIA

Q: How can I overcome my fear of the dentist?A: First of all, you are not alone in havingsome sort of anxiety about going to the dentist. The apprehension often stems from a badexperience as a youngster that may have leftyou fearful of a particular dental procedureor with a general anxiety about going into adentist’s office, or with a full-blown phobia. As a youngster, you may have had a procedurein which the dentist used too little anesthesiaor applied it improperly. Dental phobia canalso come from a fear of needles, which is notan uncommon fear, or from the whine of thedrill. But be assured that dental technology hasevolved considerably over the years.Anesthesia now comes in many forms andthrough new delivery systems. In some casesyou may be able to listen to your favorite musicinstead of the dreaded whine of the drill. Themost important thing is to find a dentist withwhom you can talk and feel comfortable. If it’sbeen a while since you’ve seen a dentist, talkwith your friends about the dentists they use. They’ll be happy to help you find one you’recomfortable with. Once you find a dentist withwhom you’re comfortable, ask him or her toexplain the wide variety of anesthetic optionsthat are available. Once you’ve re-establishedthe practice of regular dental visits, you’regoing to feel much better about yourself andyour smile.

SOUND OFFDo not sign referendumfor Downers GroveI encourage you to not sign

any referendum for a newpolice station and fire stationon Ogden Avenue. For 30 yearsthe residents of BurlingtonHighlands and Orchard Brookhave had to put our lives on theline to try to enter onto OgdenAvenue or to exit into theHighlands from Ogden Avenue. With the increased toll fees, there has been a huge increasein traffic on Ogden and a bigincrease of semi trucks usingOgden now to avoid toll fees.We have been trying to get acontrol signal between Sara-toga and Belmont for 30 yearsto no avail. Anyone who thinksthere is no problem needs onlyto witness the hazard between4 p.m. 7 p.m. and 7 a.m. and9 a.m. every day with theamount of traffic. Regardlesswhat the cost is to put the newstation on Ogden Avenue inorder to get a controlled signal,it will be worth every dollar toinsure the safety of our resi-dents in our area. I encouragethe council to proceed with theproject.

Freedom of speechmust be upheldI’m going to start my own

protest right here, and it’sagainst people in the west-ern suburbs making ignorantcomments about the rights ofother people. Can you imaginewhat kind of riots there would ifpeople could not pass judgmenton people from other ethnic andsocial economic backgrounds? It would make Ferguson look likeDisneyland.

Media needs to stopsensationalizingI certainly agree with last

week’s article “Officer wasdoing his job.” The media needsto stop building this up andantagonizing people. They aresomewhat responsible for all theprotests. The officer was doinghis job.

Sound Off reflectsopinions, not factsI’d like to remind readers of

the Sound Off column that, asthe guidelines clearly statethe comments “should not betaken as fact.” Several recentcomments about the Glen EllynPark District, which all appearto be from the same person, are misleading at best and, insome cases, simply not true. For the record, a routine exitpoll survey is being conduct-ed, based on support from amajority of the board, and willcost about 10 cents per resi-dent; it is not a “pool survey.”The proposed turf at NewtonPark represents the best pricenegotiated by a purchasingcooperative commonly usedby public agencies, and is farfrom “the most expensive turfoption.” It has yet to be decidedwhich features will be included.I would encourage all readersto contact the Park District, orvisit their website, for accurateinformation.

Buzzer beater

By ALEX [email protected]

DOWNERS GROVE – Abuzzer-beating putback pro-pelled the Downers GroveSouth girls basketball team toits sixth win of the season Fri-day against Hinsdale South.

With the game tied at 44with 30 seconds remaining,Mustangs forward Ava Porlierset up their half-court offense, winding the clock down to 10seconds before driving to thebasket and kicking it out toVashae Easley.

The senior balked at a 3,instead slashing toward thekey and pulling up for a jump-er at the left elbow. Her shotfell short, but DGS forwardKiera James out-reboundedtwo Hinsdale South defendersand quickly went back up for alayup as time expired.

“Kiera can rebound overanybody,” Downers GroveSouth head coach LyndsieLong said. “She’s a tremen-dous athlete and has the abil-ity to leap out of the gym. Sheworked to get good positioningthen went up and made a greatplay; it was a very exciting winfor us.”

The victory was in doubtearly in the second half, asHinsdale South began thethird quarter with a 9-0 run toseize momentum in what hadbeen a tightly contested firsthalf. But back-to-back 3-point-ers from Easley and Porliergave the Mustangs life, andDGS entered the final frametrailing 34-31.

Then, with four minutesleft in the fourth quarter, anEasley bucket plus a foul putDowners Grove South backon top 42-41. A Hinsdale Southfree throw again knotted thegame, and teams exchangedbaskets in the waning minutesprior to James’ late-game he-roics.

The come-from-behind vic-tory is just as symbolic as itis important to the Mustangs’

conference standing. Now inher second year as the Down-ers Grove South head coach,Long boasts an strong startingfive, as well as capable benchplayers. Moreover, Long hasthe girls believing in theirability.

“They are a confidentbunch; when we take thecourt, we think we can com-pete with anybody,” Long said.“We are a whole, collectiveunit. We don’t depend on anyone person, and any five I puton the floor, I have confidencein their shooting ability.”

Porlier led the Mustangswith 16 points against Hins-dale South. Easley scored 11points while James chipped insix and Addyson Wesolowskiadded seven.

For Porlier, who playedon the Downers Grove Southvarsity team as a freshman, defeating Hinsdale South hadextra significance because ithad not been accomplished inher previous three seasons.

“It feels great, we are play-ing at a very high level rightnow,” Porlier said. “We hav-en’t beat Hinsdale South sinceI have been here, which saysa lot about their program andsays a lot about how far we’vecome under coach Long. Hope-fully we can keep this momen-tum going into the tournamentand during the second half ofthe season.”

16 DGS,DGN, Benet, Bolingbrook, Lisle begin holiday tourney actionSUBURBAN LIFE MEDIA

The winter holidays bringscolder temperatures outside, but area gyms will heat upwith boys and girls tourna-ment action. Here’s the out-look for Downers GroveNorth,Downers Grove South, Benet,Bolingbrook and Lisle.

BOYS BASKETBALLBenetTournament: Pontiac HolidayTournamentLocation: Pontiac High School,1100 E. Indiana Ave., PontiacFirst game: 1 p.m. Monday vs.Bloom Township

What to watch: The Benetboys have not missed a beatsince graduating four startersfrom its 2013-14 4A state finalrunner-up roster. The Red-wings – who are 5-2 overall and2-0 in the East Suburban Cath-olic after Thursday’s 46-42 vic-tory against Marian Catholic– are getting valuable contri-butions throughout the lineup.Experienced seniors like DanSobolewski and Colin Bonnettas well as newcomers like Ja-son Malonga, who logged a ca-reer-high 17 points in the winover Marian Catholic, createdepth and a tough matchup forthe rest of the ESCC.

But the Redwings will sure-ly be tested at the highly com-petitive Pontiac Holiday Tour-nament. Benet will face BloomTownship in the first roundandeither Danville or second-seed-ed Curie in the second. Sime-on, Aurora West and PlainfieldNorth are the three other seed-ed teams at the tournament.
