Charlotte von Mahlsdorf, et al . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Natalie Weiss

Natalie WeissCharlotte von MahlsdorfNatalie Weiss is thrilled to be making her OCP debut in I Am My Own Wife. Her theatre credits include Algernon Moncrieff in The Importance of Being Earnest and Louis in Angels in America, both at Haymarket Theatre, Cassius in Julius Caesar and Enobarbus in Antony and Cleopatra, both with the Flatwater Shakespeare Company.

“She doesn’t run a museum, she is one!”I first learned about Charlotte von Mahlsdorf in the summer of 2004. I had just graduated from college with a theatre degree, and I heard about a play called I Am My Own Wife, which won several Tony® Awards that year. The title of the play caught my attention right away, and I did some online research to discover that it was a one-person play based on the true story of someone named Charlotte von Mahlsdorf. I Googled her name and found what I least expected.

The first thing I noticed was her big smile, bright eyes and enormous confidence. She looked like someone with amazing stories to tell. She looked like someone I could talk with for hours. The second thing I noticed was that when Charlotte was born, her name had been Lothar. The third thing I noticed was that she wore a pearl necklace in every photo I could find.

As for amazing stories to tell—boy, was that right. Charlotte had been born Lothar Berfelde, the son of an abusive, Nazi father whom she eventually killed in an act of self defense. She survived not one, but two oppressive government regimes. She created a museum inside of her home, where she provided a safe haven for those that were hunted by totalitarian systems. She received a medal of honor for saving a historic bar. She also worked as an informant for the Stasi, helping them track the very people that she also tried to protect.

In 2011, while on a trip to Germany, I remembered that Charlotte’s beloved Grunderzeit museum was located in Berlin. I couldn’t be in Germany and not visit her home. She was a historical figure that I had obsessed over for years! Being inside of Charlotte’s home was like visiting an old friend. To listen to her phonograph records (which had been meticulously cared for and still worked!), to see her pristine furniture pieces and clocks and to see her pearl necklace was surreal. Her spirit was present in every corner of that house.

It has been a pleasure to dive back into Charlotte’s world during this rehearsal process. I never imagined that I would direct and produce this play during a pandemic, when our country is ripe with political uncertainty. Though this script is a period piece, it’s themes and the topics it addresses are as relevant now as ever before. How does one survive what seems to be an impossible situation? How does one stay true to themselves while doing so? These are questions we ask ourselves every day, whether we are conscious of it or not.

I hope that learning about Charlotte inspires you as much as it did me. I hope that her story reveals that behind every decision a person makes, good or bad, there is a human being underneath that is doing the best they can with the circumstances they are facing.

A NOTE TO OUR PATRONSI Am My Own Wife marks the third production for which we have welcomed our patrons back into our building since we closed in mid-March due to COVID-19. I have been so pleased to receive such positive feedback from our patrons expressing how safe they feel at the Playhouse with all the additional precautions we have taken. The safety of everyone in the building is our top priority, so if you have any constructive feedback, please share it.

When we reimagined our season due to COVID-19, we chose to program small-cast shows at the beginning of the season for the safety of the performers. The auditions for I Am My Own Wife approached very quickly after we announced that we would be producing he show. We knew that finding the perfect performer for this very challenging role was critical. What wonderful luck that an extremely talented and accomplished actress such as Natalie would audition! Having to carry a one-person show is inconceivably difficult to me. Now throw on top of that the need to play more than 30 characters in that one-person show? That seems impossible. But Natalie accomplishes just that. I am so grateful that she has devoted so much of her time and energy to this production over the past few months.

We are dedicated to continuing to bring you safe, high-quality theatre during this pandemic. It is not easy, but we believe it is important. I know that many still do not feel safe coming into a theatre, and I understand that. If you have friends or family who are missing theatre, we have an online streaming option for our shows. Please see the Box Office for more information.

Finally, as you can see, our capacity is greatly reduced to allow for social distancing. We, like so many other arts and culture organizations, have been hit hard by COVID-19 financially. Even with the generosity of so many individuals, foundations and companies, our financial situation is still bleak. You being here helps tremendously. If you are so inclined to give a donation, you can do so at our Box Office or at omahaplayhouse.com. Donations are more important now than they have ever been.

Thank you for being here. Enjoy the show!
