---------JANUARY . 11 The nursery rhyme "Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star," written by sisters Ann and Jane Taylor and published in 1806, is familiar to most of us. More than just a song or a poem sung and recited by preschoolers for several centuries, it is a description of how young children learn. Children are born with a sense of wonder. In nurturing environments, infants, toddlers, and preschoolers will naturally explore their world through their senses. The young child's brain is "command central" for the senses. Research during the past 20 years shows that, at birth, the human brain is in an amazingly unnished state. The hardware is present but the connections are yet to be made. The child's experiences in the larger world result in connections that are reinforced as the experiences are repeated. This becomes the foundation for the child's lifelong learning (Shonkoff & Phillips, 2000). So, we know that a child's outside world shapes the brain's wiring. We know that the outside world is experienced through the senses. We also know that relationships with other people (adults) early in life are the major source of development for the social and emotional parts of the brain (The Mental Health Foundations and Agencies Network, 2000). WE are the outside world. WE are charged with the responsibility to feed their sense of wonder about the heavenly Father who made them and loves them. How do we support that inherent sense of wonder? By providing repeated opportunities to learn by doing. Through seeing, hearing, smelling, tasting, and touching God's world. By offering a loving relationship with a caring leader. By understanding that we are charged with the responsibility to lay the foundation for each child's future relationship with Jesus as his/her friend. What will you do to feed your preschoolers' wonder this new year? Written by: Deb Springer First appreared in November 2010’s First Look Newsletter.
