Writing scientific papers in English

M. O’Connor and P. Woodford (eds.) Elsevier-Excerpta Medica-North Holland, Amsterdam, 1975 (vii + 108 pp.) US8 8.75

This book appears at just the right time. The com- mon market guarantees wide-spread European contacts. Also scientists have to join this effort. The foundation of the European Journal of Obstetrics, Gynecology and Reproductive Biology serves as a rostrum for such contacts. Therefore this review in this journal.

The book opens with a chapter on the planning of a publication, and advises to write down the con- clusions clearly in order to decide upon a long article, a short one, a review article or a preliminary communication, and the type of journal suitable for the contents.

For the preparation of the actual manuscript several good suggestions are made as to decisions on

authorship, determination of the requirements of the journal, consultation of technical artists or photographers for tables, figures and illustrations. In writing the first draft it is suggested that one “settle down at a time and place which will allow you to remain undisturbed for several hours”. Unfortunately this statement is still not very valid for the obstetrician-gynecologist. Revision of the first draft has to be done in two stages: structural and stylistic. Webster’s Third New International Dictionary is recommended for the scientificwriting. At this stage advice from co-authors and friends would be a good thing to do. In the refining, at- tention has to be given to the final title, the final abstract, the indexing terms, and the completeness of the manuscript. The list of references has to be checked against the original publications. Index Medicus gives the necessary information with regard to the correct abbreviations of journals. Authors in the text have to reappear in the reference list and vice versa.

Editors and referees get their first impression of a paper from its physical appearance. The way it. is typed is therefore very important.

The book gives a very valuable list of items to be checked before the paper is submitted. One chapter is devoted to correction of the proofs. The steps in writing a paper are summarized. Units of measure and their abbreviations are given.

This book is highly recommended to all obstetri- cians and gynecologists as well as residents who feel the obligation to serve the profession through scientific publication with the final goal of better diagnosis and therapy of their patients.
