Are Changing Children’s Lives!

Whether you realize it or not, you’re already in the education industry−as the Chief Education Ocer

of your household. Here are tips to guide and inspire you along your child’s educational journey.

Create an open line of communication with your teacher, such as through email. Be proactive if you notice any issues. (Don’t wait until conferences.)

Adapt to your child’s daily rhythm. If your daughter is up early, practice spelling and reading then. If your son is worn out by 7 PM, do homework before dinner.

As daily reading requirements grow, stay engaged. Read to your child or have your child read to you or a sibling. It’s fun and helps you ensure your child “gets it.”

If your schedule allows it, get involved at school with volunteering or the PTA. You’ll feel more in tune with the classroom.

Be your child’s advocate. No matter how good your teacher is, he or she oversees a lot of kids — each with unique needs. If you think your child has a need, bring it up!

As projects and tests get bigger, make sure your child is learning how to study and manage time. (Want to raise an independent learner? Check out Sylvan’s Study Skills program.)

If homework is becoming a battle, take yourself out of the equation. Seek input and help from your teacher, and consider tutoring resources.

No matter which year of high school your teen is in, college visits should be on your goal list. Freshman year is not too soon to start looking at colleges. Make a list and start planning time for visits during school breaks and vacations.

As early as possible, work with your teen to set a goal list for high school and college. This could include advanced classes to take, researching colleges, scholarship opportunities, etc.

Recognize that you don’t need to be the expert. (Hello, advanced math!) Get your child’s teacher and school guidance counselor involved. Research free learning resources or explore tutoring if needed.

Ensure your child takes the PSAT, as well as SAT and ACT® practice exams, in preparation for the real tests.

Look for ways to give your child an edge in the future. Both colleges and employers think extracurricular activities are important because they showcase skills, commitment and responsibility. Volunteering and community involvement will go a long way in separating your teen from the rest of the pack!

Believe it or not, now is the time to ensure your child is on a solid academic track for success in college. Know your child’s strengths and weaknesses... and develop action plans for the latter.

Take the PSAT® once a year to practice for the SAT®.

Take advanced courses to build skills for both high school and college.

Seek out extracurricular activities that expose your child to new concepts.

TIP: You can learn your child’s strengths, weaknesses and how he or she compares to national norms through PSAT scores or Sylvan’s Academic Checkup.
