FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASEAPRIL 23RD, 2014

Chesapeake Climate Action Network Hosts a ‘Party with a Purpose’ The grassroots organization hosted the first annual day party to bring awareness and promote action against environmental concerns.

The ‘Party with a Purpose’ was held on the campus of Hampton University, a Historically Black University in Hampton, Virginia. The campus coordinator, Sydnie Baker, described the network’s goal, “The Youth are always the ones to bring change to the rest of the country and we want them to be aware of the issues and give them a chance to support the cause in a fun way.” The day party was also held in commemoration of Earth day. The festivities included locally grown food and a Chipotle sponsored Burrito Booth. Jeopardy as well as bobbing for apples were some of the games available for prizes. A raffle was held for a trip to the 2013 Power Shift Conference in Pittsburgh, PA and a $500 H&M Shopping Spree. The profits went to the annual Polar Bear Plunge.

The founder of CCAN, Mike Tidwell gave an inspiring speech on why more youth need to be involved in the fight to eliminate climate change and move toward a more sustainable earth. Hampton University students were also given the opportunity to write letters to their local representatives to increase their support for more environmentally friendly initiatives and bills into legislation.

The entire day was filled with music from Audio tha DJ, a Hampton graduate and East Coast favorite. There were also vendors from local farmers markets and other grassroots organizations fighting for sustainability in the Tidewater area. Office Depot and Staples were also sponsors for the event, giving away products made from recyclables and promoting their environmental initiatives. CCAN plans to continue this event annually as various college and university campuses in the D.C., Maryland, and Virginia region.

For more questions on how your campus can be involved, contact Sydnie Baker, the director of Public relations and the Campus Coordinator.
