Extended Writing

Extended writing means writing an essay that is more than 250 words.

The essay that you write should incudes:

Developing a Thesis Statement

A thesis statement is a sentence that shows the controlling idea of a piece of writing.

It should be very specific. It normally comes at the end of the

introductory paragraph.

Example:Online shopping seems to be all the

rage at the moment. This form of shopping has become so popular that it is giving shopping malls a run for their money. One of the most established and well-known online shopping websites is eBay. Shopping on eBay is popular because there is a wide range of products to choose from, it is convenient and there are a large number of sellers to do business with.

Writing at Paragraph Level

An average of a paragraph should contain 150-200 words.

Topic Sentence (TS)

Supporting Details (SD)

Concluding Sentence (CS)

Topic Sentence (TS)

It is usually written as the first sentence of a paragraph.

It also can be written in the middle or at the end of a paragraph.

A TS supports a thesis statement. It informs the reader of the content

or ideas to be discussed in the paragraph.

Supporting Details (SD)

The SD should be about the idea presented in the TS.

You can support your TS by giving examples, stating quotations, showing statistics, evaluating causes and effects and making comparisons.

Concluding Sentence (CS)

Summary of a paragraph.A final remarks on the main idea

of a paragraph.Anyway, it is not necessary for a

paragraph to have a CS.

Writing Introduction

The introductory paragraph should be the “attention grabber” of you reader.

It provides the reader with a general background topic.

It also provides the reader an idea of your stand.

How to write the introductory paragraph?

1. Start with a general statement, follow by narrower statement and the thesis statement.

2. Begin with a quotation

As the saying goes, “Two heads are better than one”. I am completely agree with this saying especially in completing a task. Working in group is more effective than working alone, as it enables more input, allows the group to draw upon various expertise of its member and helps to speed up the completion if a task.

3. Begin with a rhetorical question or a series of questions. Do you love online shopping? Online

Writing Conclusion

Conclusion gives a sense of finality to an essay.

You can write a conclusion paragraph in these ways:

End with a summary of the main points.

End by giving a suggestion.End by giving the reader food

for thought.

Exercises: Write the thesis statement, prepare an introduction paragraph (with TS, SD and CS) and a conclusion paragraph for the following statements.

1. Students should fully utilise the internet in their learning processes.

2. The text messaging had cause the deterioration of proper English Language.

had caused a lot of social problems among university students.
