The Headline

• Your headline should be short and snappy.

• It should be large and bold.

• Use exciting words, alliteration or rhyming words to

catch the reader's attention.

• Your headline tells the reader what kind of story it's

going to be.

• The 5W’s and H: The newspaper report should tell the reader:

Who What Where When Why and How

• Past Tense: You are reporting on something that has already happened.

• Third Person: You are retelling events without being involved in the story. This means using the names of the people who are part of the story or using 'he' or 'she', not 'I' or 'me'.

…Eyewitness – Reported Speech

• An eyewitness account will add interest to your report and

also give a different perspective on the incident.

• Direct speech:

Mrs Jones said “I was absolutely terrified.”

• Indirect speech:

Mrs Jones said that she was absolutely terrified.

• Write the report in chronological order. First… later on… finally…

• Split your report into paragraphs to help the reader clearly understand the information.

• Use subheadings throughout the report to break up the content and to tell the reader what the next section will be about.
