elements with negative oxidation numbers.

Examples:oxide - O2- hydride - H1- sulfide - S2- chloride - Cl1-

Exceptions:Hydroxide - OH1- Peroxide - O2

"ate" and "ite" endingsNames ending with the letters "ate" or "ite" are

polyatomic ions (see Reference Table E).
